Apple doesn’t make a MagSafe car charger — here are your options

Getting a MagSafe car charger for your iPhone seems like a simple process, but the current landscape is one of trade-offs: there are no all-in-one solutions that will wirelessly hold and charge your phone and are MagSafe certified to provide up to 15W of power. However, manufactures have been finding workarounds.

First, there’s Belkin’s Car Vent Mount Pro, which is the only MagSafe Certified car mount, and it sells for $39.99. Being certified doesn’t mean it provides power, though. You’ll have to plug your phone in with a Lightning cable (which you’d have to do anyway for wired CarPlay compatibility). This does technically let you charge your phone faster than regular wireless charging, but it leaves you messing around with a cable.

Then there’s the Scosche MagicMount, which provides a 20W car adapter but nothing to plug into it. You have to provide your own MagSafe puck, which adds $39 to the MagicMount’s $29.99 to $39.99 price tag (which varies by model). While it does technically get you MagSafe-certified mounting and charging, that’s only because you’re using Apple’s own puck.

If you’re fine with just using an official MagSafe puck, you will be spoiled for choice.

Just providing the plastic to put around Apple’s charger is a common approach. Amazon is full of the BYOP (bring your own puck) car mounts, and we’ve also seen it with Apple Watch charger accessories. It’s a quick and easy way to get users the fully certified experience without having to wait for certification (and without Apple’s Made For iPhone program fees). The downside is that users have to buy two different things.

Finally, there’s the ESR HaloLock, which seems to have it all. It’s one piece, magnetically holds your iPhone, and provides wireless charging. The only thing missing is MagSafe certification, meaning Apple will only let your phone charge at 7.5W. You’ll again see a lot of similar products on Amazon, where the manufacturer has copied MagSafe’s magnets but used a standard Qi charger for power. Like the puck holders, you’ll get most of the functionality without actually having to be certified, and the product will be fine for people who aren’t worried about fast charging.

This isn’t to say that third-party, fully certified MagSafe car mounts won’t show up at some point, just that it may take a little while. And given the other routes get you pretty close to the real deal, you can expect to see a lot of those in the meantime.

The Galaxy S21 doesn’t support Samsung Pay’s most convenient feature

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra no longer support the convenient Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) feature of Samsung Pay. And based on what the company told Android Police, the same will be true for all phones that Samsung releases from here on out.

If you’re not familiar, MST is a very cool trick that allows Samsung phones to send out a magnetic pulse that made payment terminals think that you’d swiped a regular credit card. The most beneficial thing about it is that MST can work in scenarios where NFC payments aren’t available. It can send that magnetic signal to pretty much any payment terminal with a traditional card swiper.

MST is by no means perfect: getting a payment to go through on the first try can sometimes be a challenge, and it’s worthless in situations where you have to stick your card all the way into a slot.

But now it’s a goner, with Samsung believing that NFC adoption has reached a point where it can phase out the MST aspect of Samsung Pay. “Due to the rapid adoption of near field communication (NFC) technology by consumers and businesses, beginning with devices launched in 2021, Samsung Pay will focus its support on NFC transactions, across the Galaxy portfolio,” Samsung said in a statement to Android Police. “While future devices will no longer include magnetic stripe technology (MST), customers with previous, compatible Galaxy devices will be able to continue using Samsung Pay, including MST.”

Samsung phones as recent as the Galaxy S20 FE still had MST capabilities built in, so you don’t have to go far back to find a compatible device.

This means with the Galaxy S21 family, Samsung has now gotten rid of:

  • The charging brick
  • microSD storage expansion
  • MST

I get the sense that a lot of people won’t mind losing some (or all) of those things — especially with the lower starting prices on the S21 and S21 Plus — but there’s no denying that Samsung Pay just lost what was maybe its best standout trick.

Gavaskar is entitled to his opinion but it doesn’t affect me one bit: Tim Paine

Brisbane, January 14

Australia captain Tim Paine wouldn’t engage in a war of words with Sunil Gavaskar, saying the legendary Indian’s critical assessment of his leadership doesn’t bother him one bit.

On the last day of the Sydney Test, Paine tried to unsettle Ravichandran Ashwin by sledging the Indian spinner and Gavaskar promptly termed it “unbefitting of national team captain” whose days as the man in charge seemed to be “numbered”.

Asked if he had heard about Gavaskar’s comments of him, Paine said: “I had but I am not going to go into it and get my back and forth with Sunny Gavaskar. I think I am not going to win that.”

Paine, in a curt manner, said Gavaskar’s comment didn’t bother him.

“He is entitled to his opinion. It doesn’t affect us one iota. It is adding to the Test match, which is great. So Sunny can keep saying what he wants to say. At the end of the day, it is absolutely nothing to do with it,” he said at the pre-match press conference facilitated by Sony, the official broadcaster of the series.

Paine has already publicly apologised for crossing the line and said from now on, he would like to play the way he knew and that’s doing his job with a smile on the his face.

“Throughout my career, I have done a pretty good job of being relaxed 99 per cent of the times. That’s when I have played my best cricket. Other day, I thought I got caught up in the moment.

“What I have been good at it is able to step back and have a look around the crowd and realise you are captaining your country in a Test match, something I have always dreamt of. Obviously, I am going to compete very hard and I am going to win as much as anyone and I would like to competitive,” said the 36-year-old, whose own place in the team will be under scanner if they don’t win the series.

Asked if he would continue the banter after what happened in Sydney, he said: “I will be myself. Don’t know how many Tests I have played but I have gone about in a pretty consistent fashion.” “The other day, it was a blip on the radar,” he had no shame in admitting.

Paine said he wouldn’t still mind a light-hearted banter.

“I have copped that on the chin and look to come out and play competitive cricket,  as I always do. There is a bit of banter that I always do but be aware of the stump mic and be a bit more respectful of the umpires, officials and players,” the skipper added.

On the subject of the dropped catches for which Australia paid dearly, Paine said it was both technical glitch and not being in a good head space.

“There was probably little-bit of both, there was a slight technical thing, nothing major, that’s for sure. I was little-bit tens that made my arms and hands a bit stiff, a bit tight,” said Paine.

He explained why he dropped Rishabh Pant twice off Nathan Lyon.

“….at times, the ones of  Nathan in particular, I actually let the ball get underneath my eyes and my hands were too close to my body and didn’t have enough room to go with it,” he said.

“…so for me, it was a slight technical tweak, making sure that I am getting my hands bit at front, giving myself bit more room to move and adapt with the ball and not let the ball get under my eyes. If it gets under your eyes, the you lose sight of it,” he added.

Paine also said unnecessary controversy created by Steve Smith scuffing up Pant’s guard hadn’t affected the former captain at all.

“Steve is in a good frame of mind. We have seen through what he has gone through in the past three years that he came back straight into form and performed in the Ashes, he is mentally very strong, very tough,” the skipper said.

“He knows that at times, he is going to be criticised and he has handled that extremely well not only this week but since he has come back in to our side, so, if anything he feeds off it, his statistics will speak for himself and we will see the best of Steve Smith this week.” PTI

Friday is the deadline to send the second stimulus checks, what if it doesn’t arrive by that date? | The State

It can be months before you see your stimulus check if you don’t receive it by Friday.

January 15 is the deadline established by Congress – in the stimulus package bill that was approved in December – to deliver the second stimulus checks. In other words, after this Friday, the IRS and the United States Treasury will no longer be able to send the second stimulus checks, either by direct deposit or by mail.

Anyone who does not send the second stimulus check by this date will need to claim the money as a Refund Recovery Credit when filing your taxes this year, as reported by CNET.

This means that probably it will be months before you can see your second stimulus check if you haven’t received it by this FridaySince the sending of your money depends on the date you send your return and how quickly the IRS will process your tax return.

Twitter says a new video from Trump doesn’t break the rules

On January 8th, Twitter permanently banned President Donald Trump, and proceeded to play whack-a-mole as he attempted to dodge that ban by using different Twitter accounts, each of which Twitter suspended in turn.

And yet less than a week later, a Trump video has been posted on the official @WhiteHouse account delivering a new video speech. The speech is not inflammatory — quite the opposite. It features Trump denouncing violence, lawbreaking, and vandalism.

It contains messages many might have hoped Trump would issue immediately during or perhaps even before the attack on the US Capitol, to avoid the violence and the five deaths that occurred.

Still, it’s very strange to see Trump’s face in a new Twitter video, considering such a video was one of the inciting incidents that got Trump kicked off the platform. Twitter initially removed that video due to a “risk of violence” before deciding it was too risky to allow Trump to retain an account at all… and yet he’s now able to publish a video speech to Twitter from a different account. When Twitter banned Trump, the company told us it would try to limit the use of even government accounts like @WhiteHouse if Trump tried to use them to evade his ban.

But Twitter told NBC reporter Dylan Byers that this doesn’t constitute a ban evasion at all.

When we asked how this doesn’t count as ban evasion, Twitter declined to comment.

‘Do I think it was a racist action? No, not at all. I just think it was just awful timing and stupid and ignorant.’

Luke Campbell came up short but doesn’t have to rush his next move

Luke Campbell proved what a class act he is in and out of the ring against Ryan Garcia.

Credit to Garcia, whose stunning victory over Campbell sets up a terrific year in a lightweight division packed with talent.

Campbell is still in the shake-up but after a tough loss needs to take his time to decide his next move.

A fighter with an Olympic gold medal in his pocket, who has fought the best in world title bouts, certainly has nothing to prove.

He gave Jorge Linares, a great champion, all he could handle in a split decision loss many thought he won.

He came up short against Vasyl Lomachenko, but so did everybody else before Teofimo Lopez caught him off guard.

Ryan Garcia celebrates his victory

And he put up a great performance against Garcia. But as he acknowledged immediately after the fight, he was in with someone very special.

Whoever Garcia is matched against next it is clear he has the potential to be boxing’s next crossover superstar.

I was very impressed. He had a real gut check against Campbell and came through it.

That shot that dropped him in the second round would have knocked out most lightweights. He just got up and walked straight back into him.

Garcia’s eyes were crystal clear and his legs rock solid.

Campbell is a slick counter puncher. He drops single shots. He does not run into you with volume punches.

We knew it would be a cagey, clever, rear-guard action by Campbell. The plan was to up the pace in the second half of the fight.

But Garcia showed he had real guts and can adapt. People said Campbell should have jumped on him, but when he did at the end of the fifth he was nailed with a counter.

The target that was offered in the second round was no longer available. Garcia did not drop his right hand again.

What he did do was show that he can take and land a shot. He is quick, heavy handed and explosive.

Garcia has a great chance against Devin Haney, who did not get rid of veteran Cuban Yuri Gamboa in what was a pretty low-key performance last time out.

Lopez is the standout. And Gervonta Davis’ power makes him a real threat but he can be inconsistent and unreliable.

Garcia is as fast as any flyweight and has the power of a light middle, so nobody is going to be relishing that.

They will be encouraged that Campbell dropped him but discouraged by the way he responded.

Always the sign of a great champion.

Van de Beek ‘upset’ at Man Utd and ‘doesn’t want to give interviews’ anymore

Donny van de Beek is reportedly disappointed and upset at Manchester United, and doesn’t want to give interviews anymore.

The Red Devils midfielder has struggled for game time at Old Trafford since his £35million transfer from Ajax in the summer window.

Van de Beek had to wait until late November to make his first Premier League start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was given no minutes over the Christmas and New Year’s period.

Dutch press advised Van de Beek to ‘pack his bags straightaway’ if he was left out of Man United’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat by Man City.

But the midfielder was given just two minutes at the end of the clash.

According to Dutch publication Soccer News, Van de Beek, who has kept his cards close to his chest in recent weeks, is said to be upset and disappointed.

The report adds that the Holland international doesn’t want to give interviews as a result.

Van de Beek has received much advice in recent months as his lack of game time has been a huge talking point in his native Holland.

Ronald de Boer recently instructed the midfielder to talk to the United board to clarify his position at the club.

De Boer told AD: “Euro 2020 is coming, he will undoubtedly want to be there. Maybe it would be good for him to discuss with the club exactly what they want with him.

“If the view on playing time does not improve, he may have to declare that he should be loaned or even sold.

“You have to be lucky every now and then. Of course it doesn’t look great now, but with a great performance it can suddenly change completely.

“We also don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. Perhaps they have made certain agreements with his transfer, they will get him ready for next year this season.

“That always remains a bit of a guess.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Jack Grealish ‘doesn’t fit’ Man Utd amid transfer link

Andy Cole has disagreed with Rio Ferdinand’s claim that Manchester United should go all out to sign Jack Grealish in the near future.

The Aston Villa star has once again impressed in the Premier League this season, scoring five goals and creating seven assists.

And his fine form has also seen him break into Gareth Southgate’s England side, where he is almost certain to make the Euro 2021 squad.

Grealish was strongly linked with a move to United in the summer, and speaking recently on his YouTube channel FIVE, Ferdinand said: “I don’t care if [Paul] Pogba goes or not, Grealish is my man.

Jack Grealish has once again impressed for Aston Villa this season

“If I am a manager of a top team in  England, a top three or four team, then I would not allow him to stay there, I would go and take him.”

In an interview with talkSPORT, however, Cole stated his belief that Grealish may not be the best option for United considering their strength in the central midfield positions.

He said: “I think Grealish is a super player, I’m not going to sit here and say anything different, but I’m looking at Manchester United ’s midfield at the moment, where would you play him?

“You look at Bruno [Fernandes], the performances he’s putting in; that’s the position [Grealish] likes to play in. If you put him off the left, [Marcus] Rashford plays there – so where would you play him again?

Grealish was seen in conversation with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently

“I’m a mere mortal when it comes to things like this. I’m like everybody else from the outside looking in.”

It remains to be seen if United make a bid for Grealish either in the current window or in the summer.

But the 24-year-old is not likely to come cheap considering he recently signed a new contract to keep him at his boyhood club until 2025.

Saliba’s Nice debut doesn’t go to plan as Arsenal star’s struggles continue

William Saliba received a yellow card in a 2-0 defeat as the Arsenal defender made his loan debut for Nice.

The centre-back sealed a move to the Ligue 1 side earlier this week after failing to make a single senior appearance for the Gunners this season.

Despite the 19-year-old arriving in the summer and with plenty of hype, Mikel Arteta left Saliba out of both his Premier League and Europa League squads.

Even when the Spaniard had the chance to name the centre-back in the Carabao Cup, Saliba’s name was completely absent.

Arteta explained in November that Saliba needed time to adjust to the rigours of Premier League football. And from then on it seemed the teenager’s January fate was sealed.

William Saliba made his Nice debut against Brest.

On Monday, Saliba’s loan move to Nice was confirmed. The switch was followed by some kind words from Edu, who made it clear Saliba still very much has a long-term future with Arsenal.

“William Saliba is a player with a huge amount of talent and potential,” he said.

“We’re confident he will have a great career with us but we must remember that he is still only 19 years old and has a lot of time ahead of him.

Saliba's side fell to a 2-0 defeat.
Saliba’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Only a few days later and Saliba was thrown into Nice’s starting XI against Brest. But it wasn’t the start he hoped for.

Eleven minutes into the clash Saliba was booked after trying to win the ball back having lost it with a heavy touch.

While neither was directly his fault, Saliba was part of a three-man defence that conceded two goals as the Ligue 1 outfit fell to defeat.

Saliba’s debut did contain some nice touches and tricks but his Nice career ultimately begins with a defeat.

Nice now sit 13th in Ligue 1, nine points above the nearest relegation place.

Things can only get better for the youngster.
