‘Tandav’ makers say they will make changes to web series following controversy

Mumbai, January 19

The cast and crew of Amazon Prime Video series “Tandav” on Tuesday said they have decided to implement changes to the political drama to address concerns.

“Tandav”, a nine-episode political thriller starring Bollywood A-listers Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, started streaming last week but the show landed in a huge controversy over its depiction of Hindu deities.

At the centre of the row is a scene with Zeeshan Ayyub, in the role of college student Shiva, playing the Hindu god Mahadev in a theatre production.

In an official statement, the team reiterated that they had no intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

“We have utmost respect for the sentiments of the people of our country. We did not intend to hurt or offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious beliefs or insult or outrage any institution, political party or person, living or dead.

“The cast & crew of ‘Tandav’ have made the decision to implement changes to the web series to address the concerns raised towards the same,” the statement read.

The team also thanked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for the guidance and support in the matter.

“We once again apologise if the series has unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments,” the statement said. — PTI

Vikrant Massey reveals director yelled at him after his first-ever shot: ‘I started crying and wanted to quit’

Actor Vikrant Massey reminisced about performing his first-ever shot and getting scolded by his director. The incident took place in December 2004, when he was shooting for the television show, Kahaan Hoon Main. He said that after the incident, he burst into tears and almost gave up on his dreams.

Vikrant began his career on television and worked in shows such as Dhoom Machao Dhoom, Dharam Veer and Balika Vadhu before entering the film industry. He made his Bollywood debut in 2013, with a supporting role in Lootera, and has starred in films such as Chhapaak, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare and Ginny Weds Sunny.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan India, Vikrant said, “I was shooting for the show, Kahaan Hoon Main. And just 20 minutes into the shoot, my director yelled at me so hard on the mic, in front of everyone! No-one had ever spoken to me like that before. I felt so humiliated. I started crying and wanted to quit there and then.”

“But the supervising producer, who is now a really close friend, was really supportive. She took me to a corner, and said, ‘Welcome to this world!’. She spoke to me kindly, at length, and made me go back to the set. And I have never looked back since!,” he added.

Sara Ali Khan says it’s ‘strange, weird, amazing’ to be Sharmila Tagore’s granddaughter, often wonders ‘Oh my God, that’s my dadi!’

Actor Sara Ali Khan has said that in her opinion, her grandmother Sharmila Tagore is ‘the first star’. Sara said that she often finds herself in disbelief that she’s related to such an illustrious personality.

In an interview, Sara said that she considers herself to be lucky to have a grandmother like Sharmila. “She is very warm. She is amazing. She epitomizes dignity and grace. And she’s also an extremely maternal and loving grandmother,” Sara said.

She told The Times of India, “If I watch Aradhana, and Mere Sapno ki Rani, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that’s my dadi!’ Like, are you serious? Because she’s just superb, you know, she’s a star. I think she’s the first star in my opinion. So sometimes it’s almost confusing for me, like, really that lady is my grandmother! You know, it’s weird. It is very strange. But, I mean, she’s amazing. And I’m very lucky to have her in my life.”

Sara comes from a long line of performers. Her father, Saif Ali Khan, in a recent appearance on Jacqueline Fernandez’s podcast, spoke about his family. He said, “My mother’s been doing films since she was 16. She worked with Satyajit Ray a lot, and did about four or five movies with him. She was his muse, and he thought of her as the ultimate female representation of his art.” Saif continued, “My sister is kind of in the movies, my wife, my ex-wife as well… So all of us. My daughter, my elder son wants to be an actor, and I think Taimur will be an actor for sure, he’s entertaining us already.”

Taapsee Pannu says she is aware of having ‘a limited prime run in the films’, this is what she’s doing about it

Taapsee Pannu is one of the busiest actors in the country right now, with six films at various stages of production in the pipeline. She said that she is making the most of her time, as she is aware that she has ‘a limited prime run in the films’.

After the Covid-19 lockdown eased in the country and shoots were permitted, Taapsee finished shooting for Deepak Sundarajan’s Tamil film with Vijay Sethupathi in Rajasthan. She then took off to the Maldives for a quick getaway. Post her return, she wrapped up Haseen Dillruba and is currently shooting for Rashmi Rocket.

In an interview with Elle India, Taapsee talked about taking on so many projects at once. “What to do!,” she said. “As a female actor, I don’t get paid at par with my male counterparts. I am also aware that I have a limited prime run in the films, so I have to maximise on my time! I can’t afford to sit at home now that work is picking up after the pandemic-induced lull,” she added.

Taapsee’s line-up also includes Shabaash Mithu, which is based on the life of cricketer Mithali Raj, Looop Lapeta, the remake of the German hit Run Lola Run, and a sci-fi thriller directed by Anurag Kashyap.

Welcome 2021: Brand new actor-director combos strive to strike gold at the box office

What constitutes a great film? Many believe it’s the chemistry between the actor and the director off screen that translates on screen. While frequent collaborators surely keep the momentum going, it’s the new actor-director combos that keep fans intrigued every year . And 2021, too, has many such names teaming up for the first time.

The New Year began with the announcement of Arjun Reddy (2017) and Kabir Singh (2019) director Sandeep Reddy Vanga first collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor for Animal. Then there’s Ayushmann Khurrana who has worked for the first time with Kedarnath (2018) director Abhishek Kapoor’s upcoming romantic drama, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.

One association that fans are most keenly awaiting is that of Shah Rukh Khan and Siddharth Anand for Pathan. While the director is coming out of the mega success of his film War (2019), the actor hasn’t had a release since Zero (2018).

“We always talk about how we want newer combination, newer star cast, newer teams to work together and collaborate on a film. These are all great combinations — Shah Rukh and Siddharth, Kartik Aaryan and Ram Madhvani for Dhamaka. Even Salman Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar (for Antim),” shares trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

After collaborating with SRK in his last, director Aanand L Rai is working with Akshay Kumar in his next, Atrangi Re, making it a rather unconventional director-actor pair. The film will also see him collaborate with Sara Ali Khan also for the first time. Vicky Kaushal has a string of films where he’s teaming up with a director for the first time — Shoojit Sircar in Sardar Udham Singh and Vijay Krishna Acharya for a comedy.

Taapsee Pannu and Akarsh Khurana have come together for a sports film Rashmi Rocket. Khurana who has earlier helmed Karwaan (2018) and web series Mismatched (2020), is looking forward to see how fans react to his collaboration with Pannu.

“This is a female-led film, very wholesome, and I was very happy to try something new myself. It’s a great privilege for me to work with Taapsee right now who’s on top of her game. It’s wonderful to see her drive and commitment towards the film and the amount of hard work she’s putting in,” he says.

Deepika Padukone and Kapoor & Sons (2016) director Shakun Batra are also working together for the first time in an upcoming film. Alia Bhatt has two interesting collaborations with two very different directors — SS Rajamouli for RRR and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Producer Anand Pandit feels that the audience crave to watch new combinations and it’s the job of every filmmaker to deliver on that front. “Yes, there are some hit actor-director combinations, but cinema is changing and so things need to change accordingly. The audience wants to see newness and freshness whether it’s story, casting or director and actor collaborations,” he explains.

Echoing the same sentiment, trade analyst Atul Mohan says, “There are no reservations anymore. Actors are now open to face challenges, work with new directors who can extract the best from them and the same goes for directors. They’re no longer banking on one actor with whom they have had a success rate or good box office results. Directors are trying new avenues.”

Ajay Devgn, who has worked with Amitabh Bachchan in several films, is set to direct the latter in Mayday.

Adarsh further adds, “These are not seen before, each of these directors and actors have established themselves over the years. The end result would be interesting to see in 2021.”

Rohit Bose Roy: I’ll never say no to TV, I had made that mistake once and it went against me

Rohit Bose Roy has no qualms in accepting that he is a “TV product” and has immense respect for the medium that gave wings to his acting aspirations. Thus, the actor says there is no reason he would say no to TV ever.

“TV has made me, and I can never deny its contribution to my career. Whatever I’m today is because of my show Swabhimaan,” he continues, “Even when I was doing all these big films, some of my friends used to shy away from TV saying, ‘Nahi yaar, lighting achhi nahi hoti, such garish sets, you don’t look good’. But, I never thought on those lines. Every medium has a different demand, you’ve to melt into the medium.”

The actor, whose last TV show was Sanjivani, believes that no actor is bigger than the medium and he doesn’t enjoy when comparison between mediums is made.

“I’ll continue to do TV. I won’t quit any medium. I’ve made that mistake once in my life during the Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007). I had said I might not do TV for a while and everyone took it to heart and it went against me,” recalls the actor, who has done films such as Paltan (2018), Kaabil (2017), Fashion (2008).

Having spent 20 years in showbiz and worked in TV, theatre, web and films, Roy has always put efforts in choosing stories that help him grow as an artiste. He’ll be seen next in Sanjay Gupta’s Mumbai Saga besides a web series.

“My character needs to drive the project, otherwise why am I doing it? I’ve to live to my reputation and the audiences’ expectations. In any way, this isn’t an easy place to survive,” says the actor hinting at the ongoing discussions around biases in Bollywood.

“Given my over 25 years run in the industry, I’m an insider by default. I have good friends, who don’t treat me as an outsider. But, I consider myself an outsider. I don’t believe in groups and have never been part of any camp. I agree opportunities that an insider gets, an outsider does not,” he concludes.

Rhea Chakraborty attends Anusha Dandekar’s birthday party with Farhan Akhtar, Shibani; Rajiv Lakshman shares pics

Actor Rhea Chakraborty is slowly slipping into her regular life. Rhea, who was arrested in September for her alleged involvement in a drugs case, was seen enjoying company of her friends at a party recently.

Rhea attended the birthday party of VJ Anusha Dandekar. She joined actor Farhan Akhtar, his girlfriend Shibani Dandekar, Roadies judge Rajiv Lakshman and others at the party. Rajiv even shared two pictures with Rhea, calling her ‘My girl’. Rajiv’s wife Susan shared a group picture from the party, showing all those who had attended.

Rhea was seen in a stylish suit with knee high boots. She smiled and posed with Rajiv for the pictures and was seen without any makeup.

Earlier this week, Rhea and her brother Showik were seen visiting a house in Mumbai. They are reportedly looking to move out of their home.

Picture of all the guests from Anusha’s birthday celebrations.

Rhea was let out from jail on bail in October in the drugs case related to her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Showik was also arrested and granted bail in December.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had alleged that Rhea and Showik used to facilitate drug deliveries and payment through credit cards, cash and other payment gateways. Showik had appealed for bail several times in the past in a special court and as well as in the Bombay high court which got rejected.

In an interview to SpotBoye, filmmaker Rumi Jaffery, who worked with actor Rhea in her upcoming film Chehre, said that the time she spent in jail has broken her. “It has been a traumatic year for her. Of course, the year was bad for everyone. But in her case, it was a trauma on another level. Can you imagine any girl from a well-to-do middle class family spending a month in jail? It has crushed her morale completely,” he had said. “She was withdrawn and quiet. Didn’t speak much. Can’t blame her after what she has gone through. Let the heat and dust settle down. I’m sure Rhea will have a lot to say,” he had added.

In another interview to Mid-Day, he said he was confident that she would come out of the dark space. “I am confident she will get through this phase. Everybody around will advise you to be brave, but only the one going through [the ordeal] knows how difficult it is. Time is the best healer; with time, she will be fine. She is a talented artiste and will be ready to bounce back,” he said.
