Do the citizens of Quebec serve as guinea pigs?

Because many people die from COVID-19 in Quebec and because community transmission is difficult to control, the Legault government has decided, in its vaccination strategy, not to respect the protocols of the pharmaceutical companies that have developed vaccines, go against the recommendations of the World Health Organization and against those of Health Canada.

He decided to offer a second dose of the vaccine within a period of up to 90 days after the injection of a first dose, i.e. more than 4 times the period prescribed for the Pfizer vaccine (21 days ) and more than 3 times the period prescribed by Moderna (28 days).

While admitting that we have no information on the total duration of immunity elicited by the first dose and no information on the percentage of protection against COVID-19 after 42 days after the first injection, our leaders are congratulate themselves on having, so far, “vaccinated” more than 127,000 people in Quebec (as of January 15, 2021). However, the protocols for using Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require the injection of 2 doses. To receive a single dose is therefore not to be vaccinated. However, our leaders ensure that the situation is closely monitored.

Cancer treatment

Now, we know that, in Quebec, many people die of cancer every year. The Quebec Cancer Foundation * published in March 2020 that it was predicted that approximately 56,800 Quebecers would be diagnosed with cancer and 22,400 people would die from it in 2020.

Undeniably, cancer is a deadly scourge that needs to be controlled. So let’s go back to the logic of our leaders. Why not halve the treatments given to people with cancer so as to “cure” a larger number of patients as quickly as possible?

Of course, these patients could suffer more and perhaps, it is not really known, that there will be more mortality because treatments would be cut in half. However, the number of people treated would be doubled and our leaders, who would undoubtedly monitor the situation closely, could boast of the success of Quebec’s cancer treatment strategy.

Bet on luck rather than science

This application of the logic of Quebec’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy to other diseases may seem ridiculous. But, if we remember that the Legault government, by extending the time between the two injections of the vaccine beyond what is recommended, is betting on luck rather than science, it is not so ridiculous after all.

Indeed, if our leaders now agree to risk our lives by refusing to follow the instructions for use of COVID-19 vaccines, why would they stop there? After all, aren’t the citizens of Quebec guinea pigs in the service of the state? This is what it seems.

The SQ puts its cavalry in order

The Sûreté du Québec will stop buying the horses of its employees to equip its new cavalry set up three years ago by its former director general.

The change is among those put in place after a report from our Bureau of Investigation last year revealed questionable practices in the acquisition of horses and their housing.

Noting the questions raised regarding compliance with contractual rules, the police force then commissioned an internal audit.

The new head of the equestrian team, Inspector Martin Roy, said a report recommended changes in the management, administration and operations of the ten-horse cavalry.

“The evaluation report identifies some shortcomings,” Roy said in an interview.

The recommendations made in the document are, however, secret.

“These are recommendations that are not public,” said Inspector Richard Gauthier.

RESTRICTIONS

Last year, we reported that SQ General Manager Mario Bouchard, now retired, had personally sold horses to his employer, which created the appearance of a conflict of interest. Mr. Roy said the practices have been tightened.

“Could a Police Force employee buy horses for the Police Force and sell them to the Police Force? The answer is no, ”he said.

Previously reporting to the General Manager, the equestrian team was integrated into the Emergency Measures Department, of which Roy is the incumbent.

ESTABLISHED PROCESS

The process for buying horses is now the same as for dogs belonging to the canine team, which is part of the same management. The SQ only deals with recognized breeders.

“We have well-established processes,” explained Mr. Roy.

Mr. Bouchard and police riders had sheltered horses at their home after the creation of the equestrian team in 2017.

At the moment, two permanent employees of the equestrian team house the horses in their facilities. A stable could be built.

The goal is to maintain a mix of philanthropic activities, where the police volunteer, and patrolling, where the riders are paid.

The people behind the COVID 19 vaccine reaching you

From a ASHA worker to the keeper of the cold chain, here, the unseen people responsible for the COVID-19 vaccine reaching you

9 am; January 16, 2021. Dr TR John has reason to remember this date and time. The Chief of Medical Service, Aster Medcity, Kochi, was readying to oversee the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine at the hospital and sensed the beginning of the end of a battle. An Indian Army veteran who served in Jammu and Kashmir for eight years before taking premature retirement, he says, “It felt like just before the launch of an assault on the enemy. This has been a battle after all.”

What to expect

  • Vaccination centres have been identified considering the availability of three separate rooms — a waiting area, a room for vaccination, and another to monitor the recipient for half an hour after receiving the vaccine. Ambulances will be available at the centres in case of an adverse reaction. The recipient’s identification card is verified with the registration on the CoWIN platform before the vaccine is given. Dr TR John explains that a team of four vaccinating officers and one vaccinator will take the person through the process of identification, vaccination, observation and follow-up advisory.

For most of humanity, the fight against the Coronavirus has also been a question of marking time. After scientists doubled up their efforts to find a solution, the world has waited with bated breath. Finally, as the weapon to tackle the virus began to roll out globally, and in India on January 16, hope and relief, despite the scepticism, binds us all.

On the frontline

“A specialised duty; a service to the nation,” is how Kunal Agarwal, co-founder of Koolex Cold Chain describes his role. On January 12, Agarwal stood at his depot in Pune at 4am to supervise the despatch of cold chain trucks carrying Covishield, (one of the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca with Oxford University, UK, and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India) to the airport.

“It was a proud moment for our organisation. Our fleet of 400 GPS-enabled trucks ferry highly sensitive medicines and vaccines across the country routinely but this time was different.”

Since the pandemic began India has confirmed more than 10.3 million cases and over 1,50,000 deaths. The first phase of inoculation will immunise 30 crore individuals that comprise one crore health workers, 2 crore frontline workers and 27 crore people above the age of 50 with medical co-morbidities.

1,400

  • The number of health workers Dr Abdul Ghafur, an Infectious Disease Consultant at Apollo Hospital, conducted a survey with, three weeks ago. The results showed that 45% wished to take the jab as soon as it was ready, while 55% were undecided and wished to defer it.

Latha Raju, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker has been doing field work with palliative care for the last 10 years and was deputed to track 500 households in two divisions of Cochin Corporation during the ongoing pandemic. She reported 78 positive COVID cases and four deaths from her area. “Our prayers have been answered. We have fought with courage. The vaccine brings hope,” says Latha.

This is a line that is echoed by ambulance driver Yadhu Krishna. Admitting to being afraid in the initial stages, Yadhu, who worked with 11 COVID-19 First Line Treatment Centres in Kochi, says he will now work to dispel panic and fear among the people.

Heart and mind

On the other side of the world, in the US, Dr Suzana Alex John, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and a Rheumatology Specialist at Emory University School of Medicine, felt a sense of awe and was “humbled and blessed at receiving the vaccine”.

An installation depicting the Coronavirus, by Kochi artist Bindhi Rajagopal

An installation depicting the Coronavirus, by Kochi artist Bindhi Rajagopal

The doctor who hails from Kochi and studied Medicine at Puducherry was among the first batch to be inoculated with the mRNA Pfizer vaccine. She describes the entire operation as “history in the making. I have been following the development of the vaccine. It is because of the dedicated hard work of researchers and scientists that we have it ready in record time. People worry about it being under tested, fast forwarded but actually it has been in the making for nearly three decades. It is a robust vaccine,” says Dr Suzana sharing a picture of a smiling nurse giving her the jab.

With the conclusion of hectic preparations and dry runs for the vaccination programme, Dr MG Shivadas, Ernakulam District Nodal Office for COVID, is finally breathing easy. “We have done everything as per the Government guidelines. There’s no anxiety, but there is lot of enthusiasm. This is for the sake of humanity,” says the doctor who wants grassroot-level frontline workers to be immunised first.

As mass vaccination gets underway, “hope springs eternal in the human heart,” says Dr Vasudevan recollecting the small pox vaccine, which he used to take as a child. “That was medieval torture. This is just a jab on the upper arm. We have come a long way indeed,” he says.

Only 5 people had Balakot info, must probe who leaked it to Arnab: Rahul Gandhi

Aditi Tandon
Tribune News Service
New Delhi, January 19

In the first official reaction to the explosive Arnab Goswami chats, the Congress on Tuesday demanded a probe into the leakage of sensitive Balakot strike information to the Republic TV editor and said both the source and recipient of the official secret must be booked.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led the offensive on the issue and said only five people knew of the strike and one of them shared it with Goswami.

“Both the person who gave the secret information and the one who received it must be booked. Sensitive defence information before Balakot was given to a journalist. Even the pilots get such information at the last moment. Top five people (the prime minister, the defence minister, the home minister, the IAF chief and the NSA) had this information. Someone out of them gave him this information. This is criminal. We must find out who gave and the process of the probe should begin but it will not because the PM must have given the information,” alleged Gandhi.

He also attacked Goswami for saying after the Pulwama attack that “it is good for us.”

“I do not like that language. It is the reflection of the PM’s thought process that 40 people have died and we will now win the elections,” said the former Congress chief.

Adding that the law would take its course, Gandhi said: “People in the government call themselves patriotic but there is nothing patriotic about giving out official secret information about our Air Force striking Pakistan. If Arnab Goswami knew, I believe Pakistan also knew.”

Gandhi’s remarks can trigger a massive political backlash from the BJP that is yet to react to leaked Goswami’s chats with the ex BARC chief Partho Dasgupta.

His family said in a statement: ‘We will forever be saddened that his life was cut short by this devastating disease.

‘He achieved a lot in his 24 years, but we will never get the chance to see how much more Harry could have done.’

Born August 3, 1996, Harry is the son of supermodel Seymour, 52, and billionaire husband Peter Brant, 73, who also share son Peter II, 27, and daughter Lilly Margaret, 16.

His family added: ‘Harry was not just our son. He was also a wonderful brother, loving grandson, favorite uncle and a caring friend.

‘He was a creative, loving and powerful soul that brought light into so many people’s hearts. He was truly a beautiful person inside and out.’

Harry is also survived by an older half-brother from his mother’s previous marriage to guitarist Tommy Andrews, as well as four half-siblings from his father’s previous marriage to Sandra Brant.

Seymour and Brant tied the knot in July 1995 in Paris, after meeting through the photographer Sante D’Orazio when Seymour was 26 and Brant was 48.

The ceremony was held at a chapel on an estate just outside the city.
