Media trial hinders justice: HC on Sushant death case coverage

Mumbai, January 18

The Bombay High Court on Monday asked media houses to exercise restraint when reporting on suicide cases, saying “media trial leads to interference and obstruction to administration of justice”.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni said some reportage by Republic TV and Times Now in the aftermath of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput were “contemptuous”.

The bench further said that it had, however, decided against taking any action against the channels.

The HC said such reportage by any media organisation, that obstructs an ongoing investigation or administration of justice in a case, will amount to contempt of court.

“Media trial leads to interference and obstruction to administration of justice and violates programme code under the Cable TV Network Regulation Act,” it observed.

“Any reportage has to be in accordance with the norms of journalistic standards and ethics, else media houses stand to face contempt action,” it said.

The HC also issued a slew of guidelines for media houses to follow when reporting in cases of suicide.

Following weeks of exhaustive arguments, the bench had on November 6 last year reserved its verdict on a bunch of PILs seeking that the press, particularly TV news channels, be restrained in their reportage on the death Rajput.

The PILs, filed through senior counsel Aspi Chinoy, by activists, private citizens, and a group of retired police officers, had also sought that TV news channels be stopped from conducting a media trial into the case.

During the arguments, the Union government’s counsel, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, had said there already existed adequate statutory as well as self-regulatory mechanism for the media, including TV news channels, to follow while printing or broadcasting any news item.

Private TV news channels that are party to the case had also argued that the self-regulatory mechanism was adequate and no new statutory mechanism or guidelines were required to control the media.

Rhea Chakraborty attends Anusha Dandekar’s birthday party with Farhan Akhtar, Shibani; Rajiv Lakshman shares pics

Actor Rhea Chakraborty is slowly slipping into her regular life. Rhea, who was arrested in September for her alleged involvement in a drugs case, was seen enjoying company of her friends at a party recently.

Rhea attended the birthday party of VJ Anusha Dandekar. She joined actor Farhan Akhtar, his girlfriend Shibani Dandekar, Roadies judge Rajiv Lakshman and others at the party. Rajiv even shared two pictures with Rhea, calling her ‘My girl’. Rajiv’s wife Susan shared a group picture from the party, showing all those who had attended.

Rhea was seen in a stylish suit with knee high boots. She smiled and posed with Rajiv for the pictures and was seen without any makeup.

Earlier this week, Rhea and her brother Showik were seen visiting a house in Mumbai. They are reportedly looking to move out of their home.

Picture of all the guests from Anusha’s birthday celebrations.

Rhea was let out from jail on bail in October in the drugs case related to her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Showik was also arrested and granted bail in December.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had alleged that Rhea and Showik used to facilitate drug deliveries and payment through credit cards, cash and other payment gateways. Showik had appealed for bail several times in the past in a special court and as well as in the Bombay high court which got rejected.

In an interview to SpotBoye, filmmaker Rumi Jaffery, who worked with actor Rhea in her upcoming film Chehre, said that the time she spent in jail has broken her. “It has been a traumatic year for her. Of course, the year was bad for everyone. But in her case, it was a trauma on another level. Can you imagine any girl from a well-to-do middle class family spending a month in jail? It has crushed her morale completely,” he had said. “She was withdrawn and quiet. Didn’t speak much. Can’t blame her after what she has gone through. Let the heat and dust settle down. I’m sure Rhea will have a lot to say,” he had added.

In another interview to Mid-Day, he said he was confident that she would come out of the dark space. “I am confident she will get through this phase. Everybody around will advise you to be brave, but only the one going through [the ordeal] knows how difficult it is. Time is the best healer; with time, she will be fine. She is a talented artiste and will be ready to bounce back,” he said.

Rhea Chakraborty has become quiet and withdrawn, time in jail ‘crushed her morale completely’: Rumi Jaffery

Filmmaker Rumi Jaffery, who worked with actor Rhea Chakraborty in her upcoming film Chehre and was planning to cast her and late actor Sushant Singh Rajput together in a film, said that she will resume work soon. He also talked about meeting her recently and said that she had become quiet and withdrawn.

Sushant died on June 14, and different angles of the case are being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Rhea, who was his girlfriend at the time of his death, was accused by his family of abetment of suicide and embezzlement of his funds, among other things. She was arrested on a drugs-related charge in the case and spent nearly a month in Byculla jail before being released on bail.

In an interview with SpotboyE, Rumi said, “It has been a traumatic year for her. Of course, the year was bad for everyone. But in her case, it was a trauma on another level. Can you imagine any girl from a well-to-do middle class family spending a month in jail? It has crushed her morale completely.”

Rumi said that Rhea will return to work early next year and revealed that he met her recently. “She was withdrawn and quiet. Didn’t speak much. Can’t blame her after what she has gone through. Let the heat and dust settle down. I’m sure Rhea will have a lot to say,” he said.

Earlier this week, Rhea’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde urged the CBI to make their findings public, as ‘it is high time that there is a closure’ to Sushant’s death. “She was arrested in a bogus case with no evidence by NCB. She was harassed by various agencies and remained in custody for almost a month till the Bombay High Court released her on bail,” he said.

Sara Ali Khan on advice to brother Ibrahim on acting debut: ‘My only tip would be to just be an all-rounded human being’

Actor Sara Ali Khan said that the only advice she can give her brother Ibrahim Ali Khan would be to get as much exposure as possible. She said he ought to get a good education, travel the world and be an all-rounded human being. She also singled out his sense of humour as his calling card.

Sara made her film debut in 2018 with Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer Kedarnath. She later starred in the blockbuster Simmba but followed it up with a dud, Love Aaj Kal. Her latest release is Coolie No 1 with Varun Dhawan.

Speaking to ETimes, she said her younger brother’s sense of humour is remarkable : “His humour is amazing. My only tip to him would be to just be an all-rounded human being. You know, I think that films are a beautiful business and he would be lucky to enter this world. And if he needs advice in terms of acting or anything like that, he has many people in the family also to turn to, there are much bigger actors and stars and you know, much more experienced than I am.”

At the time of Sara’s own debut, one of the qualities that set her apart was how sensible she came across as a newcomer. That aspect was on display again as she mentioned that there were far more experienced actors in the family to give him advice, about acting or otherwise, than her. She said: “I don’t think meri aukat aayi hai abhi tak, ke main kisiko tips du, lekin main itna zarur boleungi ke life main alag alag cheezo ka anubhav karna bohot zaruri hai. Chahe woh education, chahe woh traveling ho, chahe woh baatein karna ho ya logo ko observe karna ho (I don’t think I have the calibre to dole out advice to him just yet, but I will say that he should experience a number of things, be it education, travel, talking to people or observing them), that is very, very important. So that’s something I would advise him to do and the rest. He has his mother and father and a lot of other people to tell him what to do.”

Her latest film Coolie No 1 hasn’t garnered positive reviews. Writing about it, Hindustan Times said: “David Dhawan has proved beyond doubt that it is impossible to templatise David Dhawan. With the sharp writing and editing missing, Coolie No 1 is but a poor facsimile of the original.” Sara is currently busy shooting for Akshay Kumar, Dhanush-starrer Atrangi Re, which is being directed by Aanand L Rai.

PM, ministers should sleep on floor till farmers out in cold: Bittu

Aditi Tandon
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 27

Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Centre for its “stubbornness” over the farm laws and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his entire cabinet should sleep on the floor till the time farmers are out protesting in the cold.

Addressing reporters at a press conference arranged by the Congress for the party’s Punjab leaders who have been sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar since 20 days, Bittu said the farmers would consider trusting the PM if he repealed at least two of the three controversial laws before the December 29 meeting with the farmers’ unions.

“The government should stop being so obstinate and should repeal the laws on electricity dues and stubble burning penalty,” Bittu said flanked by Khadoor Saheb MP JS Gill and Punjab Congress MLAs Kulbir Jira and Ravinder Amla, who have been staging a dharna at Jantar Mantar for days in support of farmers.

Bittu said the farmers were very unhappy and their sons, who are guarding the borders, are “asking daily when the PM will send their parents home.”

“What do you want? The sons of these farmers are guarding our borders.

They are asking when will PM send our parents home. Else they will take leave and come home. Punjab and Haryana giving soldiers to defend the borders and food to fill the granaries and what age you doing? You are killing Punjabis at the border also and here also,” said Bittu.

He accused the government of leaving farmers in the lurch — “you don’t want to let him live or die,” he said asking the PM and all cabinet ministers to sleep on floors while farmers agitate on Delhi borders.

JS Gill said actor Sushant Rajput’s suicide caused so much furore nationally while the suicide of Baba Ram Singh killed didn’t cause any flutter.

“Value of every life should be the same,” Gill said adding that the PM will not become small by retracting the laws.

Admission of fault is a courageous thing to do, he said.

“You won’t lose if you retract. Acknowledgement of wrongdoing is courageous. You will become bigger with conceding. They must realise that the farmers of Punjab and Haryana who were divided previously stand united due to farm laws,” Gill said.

Gill also attacked the BJP governments registering cases against protesting farmers in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

“The farmers are not afraid of these cases. PM must repeal laws,” he said with Bittu and Jira asking why the PM did not speak of farmers in his Mann ki Baat, the last edition this year.

Bittu also said there was no dearth of money for farmers as NRIs from Punjab have a lot of money to support them.

How many accounts will you freeze, Bittu asked the Government.

He said MSP is being granted only in Punjab, Haryana, UP.

“Rest of the farmers in other states haven’t tasted MSP. The government should be stubborn. No political party can’t mobilise people for so many days. This is a genuine farmer protest and PM must listen,” Bittu said.

Ankita Lokhande perches herself on boyfriend Vicky Jain’s lap in throwback photos from Goa trip

Actor Ankita Lokhande took a trip down memory lane and fished out pictures from an epic Goa trip with her boyfriend, businessman Vicky Jain, family and friends. In one of the photos, the couple was seen at a beach shack. She wore a red floral shirt and denim shorts as she sat on his lap. He was also dressed casually in a muscle tee and shorts.

Other photos showed Ankita and Vicky chilling with family and friends, including actor Aparna Dixit. “We are family. Who all r interested to go again???? raise ur hand goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa @aparnadixit2061 @jainvick @arpanlokhande32 @aditya.sahu.790 @a_s_h_i_t_a @sandeep.munshi @vandanaphadnislokhande @manasiayachit @sampurna.sahu,” the Instagram post was captioned.

Aparna expressed her wish to go on another trip with all of them. “Me me me. Lets go goa! What an amazing trip (just not the jelly fish and injuries),” she commented.

Last week, Ankita celebrated her 36th birthday with Vicky and a few friends, including actor Rashami Desai and producer Sandip Ssingh. She faced a lot of backlash from late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s fans for partying.

Though Ankita did not directly comment on the trolling, she seemed to give a reply to her haters with a cryptic quote shared on Instagram stories. “Me and my heart, we have got issues that we battle with, but one thing that will never live inside of us is hate. When you have thoughts of hatred inside of you, that is the ugliness from the soul that creates and controls all of your issues,” the quote read.

She also shared another quote, which read, “I am a stable being. If people say negative about me… I know it’s just their opinion… created based on their sanskaars… or based on their mood today. Their opinion reflects their reality, not mine. I remain stable as I know who I am.”

Sara Ali Khan on comparisons with Karisma Kapoor in Coolie No 1: ‘I wouldn’t dare to ape her as I would not be able to do so’

Actor Sara Ali Khan has opened up about comparisons with Karisma Kapoor as she gears up for the release of Coolie No 1 – a remake of David Dhawan’s 1995 film that featured Govinda and Karisma in lead roles.

The new film pairs Sara with Varun Dhawan and lands on Amazon Prime this Christmas. David had also directed the original. This is the third film that brings the father-son duo of Varun and David together.

The original film, much like many others in the 90s, limited the female lead character to a role where she mainly had song and dance sequences. Asked if her character is like Karisma’s in the original, Sara told BollywoodHungama, “I think one is not trying to copy Karisma maam or fill in her shoes because she is an institution in herself. While she is extremely inspiring, I would not dare to try to ape her because I would not be able to do so, even if I tried very hard. The only attempt is to , kind of, try and bring to this film, something of my own. For me, it was not as much about following her footsteps, as it was about performing under David sir’s guidance, chemistry with Varun and things like that.”

“As far as passive or active character, or screentime is concerned. For me, as an actor, it is exciting to be part of exciting films. I want to be able to do different genres of films. I want to tell interesting stories. In the end, I want to do films that make you laugh. I don’t care whether you laugh at my jokes, or Varun’s or Paresh’s. You are laughing, watching my film. That is what matters for me,” she added. Varun added that the same script of original film has been adapted for their new movie.

After making her debut with Sushant Singh Rajput in Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath, Sara soon featured alongside Ranveer Singh in Rohit Shetty’s hit Simmba. Gauri Khan, son AbRam spotted at Karan Johar’s residence for a kids’ party, see pics here

Producer-interior designer Gauri Khan and her younger son, AbRam, were spotted outside filmmaker Karan Johar’s residence on Wednesday. It was reportedly for a kids’ party.

In pictures shared online, AbRam was seen in a red and blue T-shirt while his mother was wearing a black and white combination. Both had masks on.

As per a report in The Times of India, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, daughter of Amitabh Bachchan was also present at the party.

Karan has twins – Yash and Roohi – whose videos and pictures he routinely keeps posting online. Through much of the lockdown, he had regaled fans by posting funny videos of life with his twins at his Mumbai residence. All of it came to a grinding halt after the tragic passing away of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, after which Karan was attacked on social media, for allegedly supporting nepotism.

However, in November, he announced his first book – a children’s book titled The Big Thoughts Of Little Luv — which he had written during the lockdown. It was launched online on December 4. It is based on his experiences of being a single father to his twins. A number of his friends and colleagues in the industry had posted videos of their children, reading the picture book.

Sharing pictures of AbRam, Gauri had written: “All grown up, AbRam’s reading this book himself!! Congrats @karanjohar on the book!!” The pictures showed Gauri sitting on the balcony of her lavish Mumbai home, overlooking the sea, as AbRam read the book.

Karan’s production company recently released the Netflix show, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, which featured former actor Neelam Kothari Soni, Sohail Khan’s designer wife Seema, Ananya’s mother Bhavana Pandey, actor Sanjay Kapoor’s wife Maheep.

Gauri recently won an award by Architectural Digest. Sharing the proud moment was husband Shah Rukh Khan, who had written: “Chalo ghar mein kisi ko toh award mil rahein hain!!! (Atleast someone is winning awards in the house).”
