Ratings must remain suspended till BARC takes action to address concerns: NBA

New Delhi, January 18

In the wake of purported WhatsApp conversations between Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and former Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) head Partho Dasgupta emerging in the public domain, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) on Monday said ratings of television news channels should remain suspended till the TV ratings agency takes action to address concerns and shares details of it with the stakeholders.

In a statement, the Rajat Sharma-headed NBA said it is “shocked to see hundreds of WhatsApp messages that have been exchanged between BARC India’s former CEO—Partho Dasgupta—and Arnab Goswami, Managing Director, ARG Outlier Media Pvt. Ltd”.

It demanded that the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) membership of Republic TV should be suspended with immediate effect till the case related to manipulation of ratings is pending in court.

According to the statement, the NBA urged the BARC to come up with a clear statement about the veracity of its ratings in the period during the audit and also conduct an audit of the Hindi news segment.

“Expunge the data of the erring broadcaster and restate the real position of rankings of all news channels from the beginning,” it demanded from the ratings agency.

The BARC should explain the concrete steps taken by it in the last three months to secure the ratings and bring transparency to the process as well as create a system, whereby any change to the ratings that impacts the news ecosystem is done only after due consultation with a BARC sub-committee of NBA nominees, it said.

The NBA also asked the BARC to explain what penal actions are provided for in its constitution against broadcasters who have indulged in manipulation of ratings of this magnitude and what action will be taken in the current case.

The ratings of news channels must remain suspended till the time all details of such actions taken by the BARC are shared with the stakeholders, it said.

The NBA’s board also wants to place on record that the “corrupt data released month after month” has not only led to reputation loss, but has also caused huge financial losses to news broadcasters, for which the BARC is duty-bound to give an explanation, the statement said.

Dasgupta, who was arrested in the fake Television Rating Point (TRP) case, is now in the ICU of the state-run JJ hospital in central Mumbai.

A diabetic, he was rushed to the hospital from the Taloja Central Prison in Navi Mumbai on Saturday after his blood sugar levels went up on Friday midnight.

As the controversy surrounding the alleged TRP scam grew, the BARC, which provides TRP data, announced a temporary suspension of the weekly ratings of news channels across languages in October last year.

The NBA is the largest organisation of news broadcasters, consisting of almost all major news networks of the country. Republic TV, however, is not a member of the NBA. PTI

Grudging skiers prepare class action lawsuit against Stoneham and Mont-Sainte-Anne

Unable to practice the sport they love in full swing, season subscribers from Stoneham and Mont-Sainte-Anne ski centers have taken steps to file a class action lawsuit against the owner of the two mountains.

The Facebook group formed on Saturday had more than 800 members by Sunday afternoon.

After the launch of the “La Passe” reservation portal on Friday, the crowds on the website caused a computer bug and several riders were unable to reserve their seats over the weekend. The unlucky ones couldn’t hit the slopes during the first tack of the year.

We are at the stage of analyzing the file and evaluating it in order to file a legal appeal, Me Raphaël Parrot, who represents the plaintiffs, told TVA Nouvelles on Sunday.

“We are assessing the class members’ remedies and expect to file a class action leave application in superior court as early as this week.”

Yann Giroux, one of the creators of the collective action Facebook group, believes that season ticket holders have been harmed by ski center managers. According to him, there was negligence on the part of the company.

“We understand that the ski mountains are going through difficult times, but we find their way of managing neglectful and irresponsible,” he said. They sell too many tickets and withhold the numbers while other mountains restrict themselves from selling more.

“They prevent day pass holders from coming to ski … it’s full of setbacks, one after another.”

The group claims compensation for the “damage” suffered. A season pass costs

In an email to TVA Nouvelles, the company RCR, which owns the two ski resorts, said it understood the frustration of its customers, but recalled that the objective of establishing “La Passe” was to limit traffic.

Rather, it is the grumbling that ensues.

Based on information from Raphaël Beaumont-Drouin, TVA Quebec.

No coercive action against Arnab Goswami till Jan 29 in TRP case: Mumbai Police

Mumbai, January 15

The Mumbai Police told the Bombay High Court on Friday that it will not take any coercive action till January 29 against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and other employees of ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd in the alleged fake TRP scam case.

ARG is the parent company that runs all Republic TV channels.

A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and Manish Pitale also extended till January 29, the interim relief for employees of the complainant company in the case, Hansa Research Group, by directing the police to ensure they are called for inquiry for not more than two days a week.

The bench also took on record the status report filed by the Mumbai Police in its investigation in the alleged scam which came to light late last year.

ARG media had approached the HC last year seeking, among other things, that the police be restrained from taking coercive action against its employees.

On Friday, ARG’s counsel senior advocate Harish Salve told the court that the allegations of the Mumbai Police that Goswami paid bribes to rig TRP numbers was “nonsensical.”

Salve said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had registered a money-laundering case related to the alleged TRP scam and was probing the same.

He said the HC must call for a status report from the ED, too, and if the contents of the status reports filed by the Mumbai police and the central agency differed much, the court would realise the case against ARG was malafide.

The ED’s counsel, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, told the bench that the central agency had readied its status report and the court must accept it in a sealed cover.

The Mumbai Police’s counsel, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, however, opposed the ED’s submissions.

Sibal raised questions on the ED’s locus standi in the matter. He also reminded the court that the financial probe agency was not a party in the case before the HC.

Salve, however, told the HC that ARG had amended its plea and sought that the ED be impleaded as a party.

The court then directed Sibal to file his reply to the amended plea and the ED being impleaded, by the next date of hearing.

While opposing the ED being joined as a party, Sibal went on to question the central agency’s “enthusiasm” to file its status report even before it was impleaded as a party.

“I have strong objections to the ED appearing in this matter. Why is this enthusiasm..,” Sibal said.

Salve, however, argued that the police must not have any opposition to the court going through the ED’s report.

“I dont understand how the State agency is trying to stop a Union agency from filing a report,” Salve said.

The court, though, refused to take the ED’s status report on record on Friday and said it will consider the same on the next date of hearing.

On January 6, Sibal had told HC that the Mumbai police will not take any coercive action against Goswami and employees of ARG till January 15.

On Friday, as the HC granted the police time to file its reply to the amended petition and adjourned the hearing to January 29, Sibal submitted that he had no objection to such protection being extended till then.

The HC accepted Sibal’s submission.

ARG Media has filed several pleas and interim applications in the HC urging the court to transfer the probe in the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or any other independent agency.

The pleas also urge the court to stay in the meanwhile, any further investigation in the case, and to restrain the police from taking any coercive action against the petitioners, their employees, or investors.

The alleged racket was uncovered in October last year when the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) filed a complaint claiming certain television channels were rigging TRP numbers. PTI

Salesforce says it has taken action against the RNC, but won’t say how

Salesforce has “taken action” to stop the Republication National Committee (RNC) from sending emails that could incite violence, though the company won’t say what that action is. The RNC is using ExactTarget, a Salesforce tool, for campaign emails.

The move, first reported by Motherboard, comes after the Trump campaign sent an email urging supporters to “step up RIGHT NOW” and “defend the integrity of this Election” shortly before the breach of the US Capitol on January 6th.

Salesforce confirmed to The Verge that it hasn’t dropped the RNC as a client. “The Republican National Committee has been a long-standing customer, predating the current Administration,” a spokesperson said. “We have taken action to prevent its use of our services in any way that could lead to violence.”

The enterprise software company declined to elaborate on what action it has taken and whether the mysterious measure would affect the Trump campaign, as well as the RNC.

Before the attack, the Trump campaign sent emails saying the election was rigged and the results needed to be overturned. The campaign sent 569 emails between November 3rd and January 6th, including four emails the morning of the breach, Motherboard reports.

Each email asked supporters to donate money to the campaign. While it’s not known how big the ExactTarget email list was, in 2018, the Trump campaign reportedly had contact information for 20 million supporters.

The RNC told Motherboard that it had ‘independently’ decided to stop its digital fundraising efforts on January 6th. The following day, another email service — Campaign Monitor — suspended the Trump campaign’s account. That alone would make it harder for the campaign to raise money.

Social media platforms are also taking action against Trump in the wake of the attacks in DC. On January 7th, Facebook blocked the president indefinitely, and at least until Joe Biden’s inauguration. The following day, Twitter permanently banned Trump’s account.

The news from Salesforce isn’t quite so decisive. Perhaps, like Campaign Monitor, the company is making it more difficult for Trump to fundraise. We can’t know for sure, because Salesforce won’t answer our questions.

Bianca Andreescu back in action in Melbourne

Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu is expected to return to competition in late January in Melbourne as part of a pre-tournament for the Australian Open.

Currently ranked seventh in the world, the 20-year-old Ontarian will be making her first appearance on the tour since the 2019 WTA Finals. She suffered a knee injury and had to withdraw from the event. Also plagued by a foot injury in the following months, Andreescu ultimately did not play a tournament in 2020.

In Melbourne, she will also be accompanied by Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez, who is among the 92 invited players.

The players will be divided into two groups who will participate in as many separate preparatory tournaments. These will take place from January 31 to February 6.

The Australian Open will then take place in Melbourne from February 8-20. American Sofia Kenin will look to defend her crown on the women’s side.

Free tips for Tuesday night’s Premier League action

It’s the festive fixture schedule – which means that just 48 hours after some teams have done it once – they have to do it all over again.

But the frequency of fixtures means that there’s opportunities to make some money from the bookies.

We look at Tuesday’s Premier League matches and highlight the best bets.

Recommended Bets

Man Utd vs Wolves – Utd win BTTS 5/2

West Brom vs Leeds – Under 2.5 goals 5/4

Southampton vs West Ham – West Ham win 23/10

Brighton vs Arsenal – Arsenal win 13/10

Burnley vs Sheffield United – 1-0 correct score 11/2

Manchester United vs Wolves, 8pm

This match heralds a run of four successive home matches for United, and the opportunity to prove they have finally overcome the home sickness which troubled them earlier on in the campaign.

They are 4/7 to do just that with thepools.com, with Wolves a very big 5/1 , the clash coming so quickly after their sterling effort against Tottenham.

United’s recent form has justified their favouritism.

Since losing at home to Arsenal on November 1, United have beaten West Brom and Leeds and drawn with neighbours Manchester City in domestic Old Trafford action, while Wolves won at Arsenal, but then lost to Liverpool and Burnley on the road before Sunday night’s draw with Spurs.

Another draw is 3/1 .

Goals look likely. Six of United’s last eight matches have featured Over 3.5 goals, an 11/5 shot with thepools.com, although only two of Wolves last four have gone Over 2.5.

And don’t dismiss the half-time full-time turnaround again, 20/1 for United to recover a half-time deficit and a massive 50/1 for Wolves to do the same.

The pools.com is the country’s oldest and longest established betting outlet.

This fixture features two of the division’s best comeback teams. Since the start of 2018/19 only Liverpool have picked up more points from losing positions than Man United (44) and Wolves (40).

Another stat to consider is that since the beginning of 2019/20, United’s 32 penalties (27 scored) in all competitions is the highest of any side across Europe’s top five divisions.

Bruno Fernandes, 7/2 first scorer , is on penalties.

West Brom vs Leeds, 6pm

This fixture has been thrown up in the air by Big Sam’s arrival.

All previous form lines are redundant – and odds of 5/2 for the home win are tempting. Leeds are 21/20.

Both sides were in action on Sunday and both secured excellent results – Leeds edging Burnley 1-0 and The Baggies drawing at Anfield. Both games went Under 2.5 goals and at 5/4 that is the stand-out bet tonight.

Can Sam Allardyce grind out another result tonight?

The first goal could be crucial. Leeds are yet to pick up a point away from home when conceding first this season, and Allardyce will have his side well drilled to avoid doing just that.

Southampton vs West Ham, 6pm

The Hammers could be Tuesday’s coupon buster.

A goalless draw on Boxing Day gave Southampton a third winless game in a row (D2, L1), the Saints recording just three attempts at goal – the joint-fewest they’ve registered in a Premier League game since 2003/04.

And the shot shy Saints now face a West Ham team they have lost five straight head to heads against.

The sight of the Saints will be a welcome won for David Moyes’ men, after their 3-0 defeat at Chelsea ended a nine game scoring run away from home.

The three Premier League away wins they have picked up so far is just one shy of their entire away tally from last campaign.

The Hammers are 23/10 to win , with the draw 12/5 and Southampton favourites at 6/5 .

Che Adams has scored in Southampton’s last three home wins and is a 2/1 anytime scorer.

Che Adams has scored in his last three home wins

Sebastien Haller, who scored West Ham’s last away opener, has netted in his last two appearances against the Saints and is 13/2 to score first tonight.

Brighton vs Arsenal, 6pm

The Gunners have had approximately 21 hours longer to prepare for this than the Seagulls – but in truth their next match couldn’t come quickly enough after the Boxing Day derby demolition of Chelsea.

The visitors are favourites – but a generous price of 13/10 underlines how inconsistent Arsenal’s recent results have been. We’ll still take it though.

Brighton are 21/10 for the victory, but have drawn four of their last five home games and 12/5 for that outcome looks appealing.

Three of those draws have ended 1-1 and the correct scoreline for that particular outcome is 11/2.

Burnley vs Sheffield United, 6pm

Or the match already being earmarked for the last on Match of the Day slot.

Burnley have lost just two of their last eight – and across that eight-game period only five sides had a lower goals conceded average than theirs of 1.0 per game – and five came in just one match at Manchester City.

A 1-0 defeat on Boxing Day gave rock-bottom Sheffield United an 18th consecutive winless Premier League game (D2, L16) – the longest current Premier League run without a clean sheet.

But more than three-quarters of those defeats (76.92%) have been by a one-goal margin.

The previous two head to heads at Turf Moor finished 1-1 and that outcome is 5/1.

Under 2.5 goals is an eye-watering 8/15 while Burnley to win to nil is 23/10 and the 1-0 correct score 11/2.

A superb class action case against Ottawa

It was written in the sky that a large number of beneficiaries of the generous ECP (Canadian emergency benefit) would one fine morning receive a letter from Revenue Canada urging them to repay the thousands of dollars received on the pretext that they did not. are ultimately not eligible.

Gaston M. is one of those unfortunate beneficiaries to whom the Collections and Audit Directorate of Revenue Canada is claiming reimbursement of the $ 14,000 of PCU received supposedly in error according to the eligibility criteria that the tax authorities have just sent him. .

The problem ? Imagine that the government of Justin Trudeau notably changed the eligibility criteria that allowed self-employed workers, like Gaston M., to benefit from the PKU.

EXPLANATIONS

When the PKU was launched last spring, it was written in black and white that the delivery of the PKU is available to workers who, after ceasing to work due to COVID-19, “have earned income from employment or self-employment income of at least $ 5,000 in 2019 or in the 12 months preceding the date of their application ”.

Back to Gaston M. He had indeed earned “self-employment income of at least $ 5,000”, as required last spring in the eligibility requirements for the PKU.

But in the collection letter just sent to it by Revenue Canada, it no longer speaks of “self-employment income of at least $ 5,000” but rather of “net income from self-employment”.

Nasty nuance.

Gaston M., for example, earned gross self-employment income of some $ 8,250 in 2019, which was reported on line 13499 of his federal income tax return. But after deductions allowed for self-employment, he reported net income less than $ 5,000 on line 13500 of the tax return.

THE ARC LETTER

In the letter sent to him by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on November 26, “Subject: Eligibility for the Canada Emergency Benefit (CEP)”, Gaston M. is told the following facts:

According to our records, you have received one or more payments for the Canada Emergency Benefit (CEP).

Based on the records currently available to us, we are unable to confirm that you meet the criteria.

If you do not meet the minimum income criteria explained above (including $ 5,000 of net income from self-employment), it means that you are not eligible for the PKU, and must repay the payment (s) you you have received.

To better swallow the pill to the thousands of Gaston M. who were trapped by the modification of the eligibility criteria for self-employed workers for the PCU, the Canada Revenue Agency is going there gently to recover the PCU supposedly paid by fault.

“We understand that you may have made an honest mistake in requesting the ECP and want to reassure you that no penalties or interest will be applied to your ECPs payments. However, we encourage you to repay the PCU amounts before December 31, 2020 so that we do not send you a tax slip for the amount you received, ”says the Collections and Verification Branch of Revenue Canada in the letter sent to Gaston M.

REPLY BY GASTON M.

“In my case,” he says, “it’s not the penalties that bother me, but rather the very substance of the matter, which is really very simple: can the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) change the rules? rules of the game, once the game has been fully played and finished? “

In my opinion, it is fiscally unfair to change the eligibility criterion on the income of self-employed workers along the way.

Justin Trudeau’s government must order Revenue Canada to revert to the original eligibility criteria of $ 5,000 of “self-employment income” and not “net income from self-employment”.

Otherwise, I invite the Gaston M. of the PCU to file a class action lawsuit against the Trudeau government.

New York Governor asks Donald Trump to take action against new coronavirus in the United Kingdom | The State

The Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, asked the Administration of President Donald Trump to take proper precautions against the new covid-19 virus mutation that has emerged in the UK and it spreads quickly.

He stressed during a press conference to talk about the pandemic, that several countries have banned people from traveling from the United Kingdom and that 120 require that before taking a flight in that country to come to theirs they have to have a negative test.

But, Cuomo claimed, The United States has not taken any action in response to the virus mutation, what the Democratic governor considers “reprehensible.”

Cuomo questioned that there are still six daily flights arriving from that country to the John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York “And we have done absolutely nothing.”

“For me this is reprehensible because it is what happened during the spring” when the pandemic exploded in the US, he said and stated that at this time “The variant in the UK is arriving by airplanes at JFK airport.”

“One hundred and twenty countries require a test. We do not. Other European countries have imposed a ban. We don’t have it and today the variant is taking a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before learning?

He recalled that the Ports Authority, which manages the bridges, highways and ports of New York and New Jersey, does not have the authority to prohibit passengers or monitor your health, which is a job of the federal government.

On December 14, the British Minister of Health, Matt Hancock, warned about a “new variant” that spreads very quickly of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes covid-19, which had been identified in the Kingdom United.

Hancock assured that British scientists had detected “a new variant of coronavirus which may be associated with the more rapid spread in southern England ”.

The governor asked the federal government to consider multiple restrictions as a result of the new variant of covid-19, including the imposition of mandatory tests on people traveling from the United Kingdom to this country as well as a new travel ban from Europe.

According to Cuomo, the actions he recommends are based on lessons learned in March, when The federal government was slow to impose a European travel ban that allowed the virus to spread uncontrollably throughout New York state and the country.

The governor further indicated in his conference that In New York, there are 6,185 covid patients in hospitals, 23 fewer than on Saturday, 822 new admissions and 123 deaths.

The United States has recorded 17.7 million cases and more than 316,000 deaths from COVID-19, more than in any other country in the world in absolute terms, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.

Farmers’ agitation: Will decide next course of action in 2-3 days, say protesting unions

New Delhi, December 19

Farmer unions protesting against the three agriculture laws on Saturday said they will decide their next course of action in the next two-three days, after the Supreme Court earlier this week pointed out it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and peasants’ unions to resolve the deadlock.

Farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka said discussions among unions are currently underway to decide their strategy, adding that they are also seeking legal opinion on the matter.

“Our meetings are being held for the next course of action. We hope that in the next two-three days, we will have clarity on whether we should be part of a committee as suggested by the court,” Kakka told PTI.

Another leader Balbir Singh said farmers will not call off their protests until their demands are met.

“We are ready for a long haul. We are here for our rights. We are in the process to decide our stand following the court’s order,” he also said.

Thousands of farmers have been staying put at several Delhi border points for the last 23 days, demanding a repeal of the new agri laws.

Meanwhile, All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) Saturday claimed that 33 farmers participating in the ongoing protests have so far died since November 26 due to accidents, illness and cold weather conditions.

According to AIKS, ‘Homage Day’ will be observed in different parts of the country on Sunday to pay tributes to those farmers who lost their lives.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had acknowledged the right of farmers to non-violent protests and mooted the idea of putting on hold the contentious farm laws to enable negotiations with the agitating farmers, which was opposed by the Centre, which said the agriculturists would not come forward for the talks then.

The apex court, which made it clear that the issue of farmers’ protest and the right of others to move freely would be dealt on priority at the moment and not the validity of the laws, also said it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and farmer unions to resolve the impasse.

The top court said it was of the view that the farmers’ right to protest should not infringe the fundamental right of others to move freely and in getting essential food and other supplies as right to protest cannot mean blocking the entire city.

The apex court, which said it was worried with the way things are going on, was told by both the Centre and one of the farmers’ unions that the negotiations are not happening at the moment.

It also said the farmers cannot keep on protesting without talking to the government. — PTI
