Microsoft Is Making It Easier to Transfer Files From Outlook to Teams

Microsoft has added drag and drop support for transferring file attachments from Outlook to Teams. This feature will make it easier to move attachments between the two Microsoft productivity apps. It was first requested on the Microsoft forum back in 2016. The capability to drag and drop between the two apps is now available, allowing users to move files from Outlook to Teams with ease. Microsoft is also working on letting users on the free version of Teams use Calendar to schedule calls.

A Microsoft Teams administrator replied on the 2016 thread, confirming that users can now drag and drop attachments directly from Outlook to Teams. Until now, users had to first drag the files onto a location like the desktop, and drag them from there to the files tab in Teams.

The feature had started working in the Web client version of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome in February last year, when it was also marked as ‘partially done’. By October, the Microsoft Teams administrator had said that the feature was available on Teams Web client and was being tested directly from Outlook to Teams.

The forum post or ‘idea’ has received 11,571 up-votes since it was brought up in 2016.

Besides that, the administrator has also shared that the ability for Microsoft Teams users on the free version to use Calendar was being tested internally. This feature would allow users to schedule conference calling using the calendar. This request was brought up in the forum in August 2018.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is increasing the upload file size limit of Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint to 250GB. While support for the same will start rolling out by the end of this month, general availability can be expected by the end of Q1 2021. Users will be able to share large files that may contain 8K or 4K videos, 3D models, large scientific dataset, research projects, and more.

Twitter locks out China’s US embassy after ‘baby-making machines’ tweet

Twitter has locked the official account for China’s US embassy, over a tweet it said violated its policy against dehumanization, Bloomberg reports. The tweet, which was originally shared on January 7th, referred to Uighur women as “baby-making machines” prior to government intervention. Twitter removed the tweet and replaced it with a notice saying it’s no longer available. However, Twitter requires account owners to manually delete tweets that violate its rules before unlocking accounts.

Twitter confirmed the account’s locking in a statement given to Bloomberg. “We have taken action on this Tweet for violating our policy against dehumanization,” and said the platform prohibits dehumanization of a group of people based on their “religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity.” As of this writing, the last tweet from the Chinese Embassy in US account was from almost two weeks ago on January 9th.

The Jan 7th tweet is no longer visible on the account, but must be manually deleted for the account to be unlocked.

China has faced fierce criticism of its treatment of minority Uighur Muslims living in the Xinjiang province, with critics alleging that it is forcibly sterilizing Uighur women. The United Nations estimates that as many as 1 million Uighurs may be held in camps in the region, Bloomberg reports. On Tuesday, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said China’s treatment of the Uighurs amounts to “genocide.”

At a briefing in Beijing, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the embassy was “puzzled” by the account lock, and said the embassy was attempting to correct “fake reports and information related to Xinjiang.” In tweets that are still visible on its US page, the Chinese Embassy has shared reports and infographics relating to population growth and its policies in Xinjiang. The embassy joined Twitter in 2019, as part of a broader effort by China to counter criticism.

Twitter has previously been criticized by former President Donald Trump and his allies who claimed the social network was unfairly targeting Republicans while allowing foreign governments to violate its policies. In May 2020, in response to warning labels being placed on his tweets, Trump claimed the social network was “doing nothing about all of the lies & propaganda being put out by China or the Radical Left Democrat Party.”

As BBC News notes, Twitter had previously removed a tweet by Iranian Leader Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and suspended accounts associated with Cuban President Raul Castro and members of his government.

A guide to making healthy choices at the grocery store

Reading labels every time you want to eat well can be a long and tedious exercise. To make life easier for consumers and save them time, Metro has just launched the Better Choices Better Living program.

This program consists of identifying, using green labels, the best product choices according to a list of around fifty attributes.

A product could be listed as vegan, gluten-free and GMO-free, for example. Up to three attributes can appear on a label.

“This is a guide that aims to guide consumers towards the best product choices according to their lifestyle, values and health needs,” said Martin Turcotte, vice-president, marketing, Metro grocery.

Nearly 9,000 products in-store, online and on the My Metro application will display one or more attributes of the Better Life Choices program to facilitate and accelerate the shopping experience.

“Almost 70% of consumers say it’s hard to navigate the ingredient list and nutrition tables. The guide is there to facilitate their shopping experience with us, in-store or online, while saving them time, ”added Mr. Turcotte.

Classification criteria

The chain called on experts and specialists to implement this program, which is offered in all Metro supermarkets in Quebec and Ontario.

“This is a unique program in Canada. No other retailer presents health attributes in this way, ”he says.

“In Quebec, monthly more than 600,000 searches are recorded on the web in connection with a diet or a food lifestyle listed by Better Choose Better Live”, adds Martin Turcotte.

The development of the attribute classification criteria is based on research data, trends among Canadian consumers, Canada’s Food Guide and information published by regulatory bodies such as Health Canada.

“Information on product packaging is not always easy for consumers to interpret. The program therefore combines the information contained on the labels with the hidden qualities of the products. This will greatly simplify shopping and help people make informed decisions more easily, ”said Linda Montpetit, nutritionist and collaborator for Metro.

TikTok is making young teens’ accounts more private by default

When a young teenager signs up for TikTok, their account will now be more private by default. TikTok said today that it’s updating the default settings for users aged 13 to 15, limiting who can see and comment on their videos. Only users who they add as friends will be able to view their videos, and their account won’t be suggested to other users.

TikTok will also completely disable the option to let anyone comment on these users’ videos, even if they make their account public. Users between 13 and 15 will only be able to allow their friends to comment on their videos, or they can turn off comments altogether.

The app’s Duet and Stitch features, which allow users to repost and respond to another person’s video, will be disabled for videos posed by users under 16. The ability to download videos of users under that age is also being disabled.

For users between 16 and 17, TikTok is disabling the ability to download their videos by default and restricting the Duet and Stitch features to just their friends.

The suite of tweaks should add up to a TikTok that’s more protective of its youngest users. Those users can still, by and large, use TikTok the way anyone else can, but the app is doing more to shield those users and their videos from the community at large.

TikTok has been gradually adding more privacy controls for teenagers’ accounts over the past year. In 2020, the app started allowing parents to remotely set restrictions on a child’s account and later began allowing parents to tweak their kid’s privacy settings, too. TikTok also previously disabled direct messaging for users under 16.

This is all a substantial turnaround from how TikTok’s predecessor handled kids’ accounts. TikTok had to pay $5.7 million in 2019 to settle allegations that the older app, Musical.ly, failed to gain parental approval for kids under 13. TikTok now has a separate app experience called “TikTok for Younger Users” that just shows curated videos.

Bethesda is making an Indiana Jones game

Bethesda’s next project is a big surprise: today, the publisher teased a new Indiana Jones game.

While we don’t know anything about the title just yet — the announcement was simply a brief teaser video — it’s being developed by MachineGames, the same studio behind the Wolfenstein franchise. Bethesda boss Todd Howard will serve as executive producer. The title is being made under the new Lucasfilm Games label, which was announced yesterday as part of a renewed focus on games from Disney and Lucasfilm.

While details are slim, Disney says that “the game will tell a wholly original, standalone tale set at the height of the career of the famed adventurer.” The teaser video hints that the game will take place in Rome.

There’s no word yet on when the game will release or what platforms it will be on. At this point, it doesn’t even have a full title.

Samsung is making a robot that can pour wine and bring you a drink

Samsung is working on a robot that can pick up laundry, load the dishwasher, set the table, pour wine, and even bring you a drink. The robot is called Bot Handy, and Samsung says it’ll be able to recognize objects using a camera and AI.

The bot is meant to be “an extension of you in the kitchen, living room, and anywhere else you may need an extra hand in your home,” Sebastian Seung, president of Samsung Research, said during Samsung’s CES press conference today.

For now, it’s not clear how close Bot Handy is to being a real, shipping product. Samsung didn’t announce a price or release window, and the company has previously used CES to show off futuristic-looking robots that are more of a concept than a real product. The robot is described as being “in development.”

Video: Samsung

In its current form, Bot Handy is a tall, thin, black-and-white robot with two large digital eyes that change expressions as it moves around. The robot has a single arm that can pivot at three points — essentially a shoulder, elbow, and wrist — with a clamp-like hand at the end of it. There are cameras mounted on top of the robot’s body and hand for recognizing objects. The robot can move around the room on what appears to be a rolling base, swivel from side to side, and raise itself up to reach higher objects.

Samsung says the robot will be able to assess the material that different objects are made of so that it’ll grab them with the right amount of force. It’s also supposed to be able to handle objects of varying sizes, weights, and shapes.

In addition to Bot Handy, Samsung also demonstrated an updated version of Bot Care, a “robotic assistant and companion” that the company first showed off in 2019. The robot is supposed to be something of a personal assistant, reminding you to take a break from work or that you have meetings coming up. In a demo, Samsung showed the robot automatically opening up a screen so that its owner could join a video call that was about to start. Like Bot Handy, there’s no indication of how far along in development this is.

As far as actual products go, Samsung does have one robot that should ship this year. The JetBot 90 AI+ is a Roomba-esque vacuum robot equipped with LIDAR, a “3D sensor,” and AI to help it recognize objects so that it can better avoid obstacles. Samsung says the vacuum will be smart enough to get closer to objects that aren’t particularly fragile, like a kids toy, and to stay further away from something it could break, like a vase. The vacuum also has a traditional camera built in, which is meant to let you check up on pets while you’re away.

The JetBot 90 AI+ is supposed to ship in the US sometime in the first half of 2021.

Healthier 2021: Mark’s Fitness Fell Flat During Quarantine — Now He’s Making a Comeback

2020 was a wild ride. And for many of us, healthy eating, exercise, and self-care habits went flying off the rails.

If you’re feeling ready to get back on track, we’re with you. Three of our editorial team members are making big changes in the New Year, and they’ve offered to take us along for the ride. For the next few weeks, we’ll be following Laura as she ditches her sugar habit and jump-starts her fitness routine, and we’ll be rooting for our dynamic dieting duo, Bill and Mark, as they work hard to drop pounds and improve their health. Here’s to a healthier 2021!

By Mark Spoor

When I started at WebMD a bit more than 5 years ago, I was — let’s just say — a bit off-brand.

I wasn’t very active. I had spent the previous 12 months as a freelance writer and editor at home (where all my food is). Before that, I was in sports media, where they don’t let you eat anything that isn’t fried.

I was heavy and I knew it.

Since I wasn’t feeling great, and I had just started a new job at WebMD, I thought it’d make sense to get a physical, something I hadn’t done in years.

That appointment will forever be known as “my butt kicking.”

I was the heaviest I had ever been (by a good bit) and, as a bonus, I had prediabetes. That first part was bad enough, but the second part scared me straight. After all, I have a wife and a now-teenage daughter. I needed energy. More than that, I’d needed to make sure that I was going to be around for them. So I had to get back on track right away.

I went headlong into fitness. I was in the gym in our office building every weekday morning at 7. I never missed. I was a slave to routine. I’d start with 20-30 minutes of elliptical work, then follow that up with some weights and some core work. I could do all of that, get a good sweat on, and still be at my desk by 8:30. I had no excuses. I cleaned up the diet, too. Very strict on weekdays and a bit more lax (but not crazy) on the weekends.

The work paid off. I was getting compliments at the office and at home, my numbers were going down, and I felt great. What’s more, I was proud of myself for overcoming my health hurdles.

And then came COVID-19.

When we started working from home in March of 2020, we all thought it’d be for a week — 2 weeks tops. So I really wasn’t concerned that I’d get off track. I moved my workouts to the garage and went old-school: push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, planks, and some brisk walks around my neighborhood.

It all sounded good, but some important things were working against me. For one, I wasn’t really getting the cardio workout I needed. The walks weren’t enough, and I dislike running. Like, really dislike it.

Did I mention that I don’t like to run?

What’s worse, all my food was just a few steps away. Again, I thought it’d only be a week or two, so I thought a few snacks here and there wouldn’t matter.

Before long, the snacks became a habit, and the workouts weren’t as strong as they needed to be, so the numbers went back up. They aren’t as high as they were. My “thin clothes” still fit (albeit a bit differently), but I can tell a change, so frustration and disappointment have set in.

Hence, I start Round 2.

For Christmas, my wife bought me an exercise bike and a Peloton membership. I’ve worked on them for about a week. The sweat is back, but the food is still there, as is the stress of needing to turn things around, to say nothing of the COVID stress.

I need accountability. That’s where you guys — and this weekly blog — come in.

Each week, I’ll share what’s been going on in my journey of redemption. My friends Bill Kimm and Laura Downey will share their stories, too. In fact, as the weeks go on, you’ll probably read Bill and I engaging in some friendly trash talking. We’ve been friends for years and it’s just what guys do, particularly guys who worked in sports together.

One of the doctors here at WebMD, who’s actually a weight loss specialist, is gonna give me some pointers along the way, too.

We’ll all keep each other honest, and hopefully motivate you to take the journey with us.

Let’s get after it!

Lenovo chases dream of making a PC Nintendo Switch with the LaVie Mini concept

Every year at CES, we see devices meant to bridge the worlds of handheld and PC gaming. This year, it’s Lenovo and NEC that are still chasing that dream with the LaVie Mini. The device is a concept laptop-portable gaming console hybrid, and it includes a touchscreen, controller, and dock accessories.

For those unfamiliar with the name, LaVie is a joint venture between Lenovo and NEC, and although most of its products don’t make it to the US, it’s had some hits at CES in the past focused on ultra-light laptops.

By itself, the LaVie Mini seems to be a reasonably powerful and compact computer. The device, if it were real, would have an 8-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and an 11th Gen Intel Processor with Xe graphics. Of course, there’s not really space for a trackpad, but the concept design does make room for an optical touch sensor a la Blackberry.

This just goes to show that gold can look good on a computer if you do it right.
Image: Lenovo

But acting as a laptop is not really the reason this concept exists. It exists to chase the dream of having a handheld gaming computer, one more powerful than the devices Nintendo has been famous for making.

LaVie has also created a gaming controller accessory, which connects to the laptop after you fold the keyboard back. The controller has the same buttons and layout as the Xbox gamepad, so it’ll be familiar to many players, though the weight probably won’t be: the laptop weighs 1.28 pounds without the controller attached. For comparison, the Nintendo Switch is 0.88 pounds with the Joy-Con attached.

Don’t start hitting the gym to beef up your forearms just yet, though. At the moment, there’s no announced price or release date for the Mini. We’ve seen many PC manufacturers come up with similar concepts and ideas for handheld gaming computers at CES.

Most, like Alienware’s UFO concept from last year, don’t ever end up making it to market, as these prototypes are often less about making viable consumer products and more about experimenting with new ideas and form factors and getting the requisite press attention during CES. Some do go on sale but don’t end up appealing to enough gamers to really make an impact, like Razer’s Edge or the initial Nvidia Shield handheld.

Yet it’s easy to see why companies keep coming back to the idea of a computer that lets you play PC-quality games anywhere. The Nintendo Switch showed that, when done right, handheld gaming can offer a living room console-quality experience people can’t get enough of. Who doesn’t want to be able to play a game while they’re out and about, then come home, put the same device into a dock connected to their TV, and pick back up right where they left off?

That’s an experience, by the way, that the LaVie Mini would support with its optional dock accessory if it ever comes to market.

Docked, the computer could output 4K 60Hz to a TV, though it likely wouldn’t have the power to run games at that resolution.
Image: Lenovo

For now, that experience (at least for people who want that device to be a PC) will probably remain outside the realm of products they can actually buy. But the LaVie Mini shows that the dream is still alive and may actually come true sooner or later. For now, we’ll have to wait until next week’s CES to see if LaVie releases any more details about the Mini.
