Shocking video shows MAGA mob rifling through paperwork in Senate chamber and erecting gallows

Shocking new video taken inside the Capitol during the January 6 riot shows the moment a MAGA mob rifled through paperwork in the Senate chamber as they searched for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi before erecting gallows outside the building.

Veteran war correspondent, Luke Mogelson, captured the video on the day dozens of rioters, including ‘QAnon Shaman’ Jake Angeli, stormed the building following President Donald Trump’s remarks at the Save America rally in Washington, DC, according to The New Yorker.

Trump’s supporters violently forced their way into the Capitol where some were seen breaking out glass and destroying government property as others were photographed sitting at Pelosi’s desk.

Mogelson followed the Trump supporters into the building where he witnessed them banging on the walls before entering the Senate chamber, where they rummaged through numerous papers and documents.

At the start of the clip, the rioters are seen destroying property and climbing through a window at the Capitol building.

Several people are then seen confronting officers upon entry. One man is heard yelling at police: ‘You’re outnumbered! There’s a f**king million of us out there! And we are listening to Trump, you’re boss.’

They then marched upstairs yelling: ‘Treason, treason, treason!’

‘You’re afraid of Antifa? Well guess what? America showed up,’ the men yelled as they walked through the halls of the Capitol.

Moments later, they entered the Senate chamber.

‘Where the f**k is Nancy?’ one rioter questioned as they walked through the empty chamber.

In the clip, several people are seen taking photos of the documents that were secured inside binders in the chamber.

‘There’s gotta be something in here we can f**king use against these scumbags,’ one man is heard telling another.

At one point, Angeli, who has since been arrested and charged for his role in the riot, is seen walking up to the men rummaging through the papers.

‘Glad to see you guys,’ he tells them as he’s followed by a police officer.

The officer is heard asking one of the rioters, who was seen sitting on the floor, if he needs medical attention.

‘Any chance I can get you guys to leave the Senate wing?’ the officer is heard asking the men.

While the officer watches, Angeli asks another man to take his photo.

Angeli is then seen writing a note on the desk as the officer once again asks everyone to leave.

‘It’s only a matter of time. Justice is coming!’ the note reads.

Before saying a prayer, a group of the MAGA mob is heard yelling: ‘Jesus Christ we invoke your name! Amen!’

Outside of the Capitol, others were seen erecting gallows and chanting ‘USA.’

Toward the end of the video, a large mob is seen throwing equipment onto a pile and setting it on fire.

‘Star making a list put all those names down and we start hunting them down one by one,’ a man is heard yelling.

One said: ‘Traitors get guillotine!’

‘We are at war,’ another yelled.

More than 125 people have been arrested so far on charges related to the violent insurrection led by Trump supporters at the Capitol, where a Capitol police officer and four others were killed.

Charges from the January 6 riot range from curfew violations to serious federal felonies related to theft and weapons possession.

Some of those arrests include Robert Sanford, 55, a retired Pennsylvania firefighter, who allegedly threw a fire extinguisher that hit three Capitol Police officers during the violent siege.

He was charged with assault of a police officer, disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, civil disorder and unlawfully entering the Capitol. His lawyer said he was a Trump supporter who got caught up in the mob mentality.

Richard Barnett, 60, of Arkansas was photographed sitting with his boots on a desk in Pelosi’s office during the January 6 riot.

He was ordered Friday to be brought to Washington, where he faces charges of unlawfully entering a restricted area with a lethal weapon – a stun gun. Barnett is also charged with disorderly conduct and theft of public property.

Retired Air Force Lt Col Larry Rendall Brock Jr, of Texas, is a former former fighter pilot photographed on the Senate floor wearing a military style helmet and body armor and carrying plastic zip-tie handcuffs.

He is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Jacob Chansley, 33 of Arizona was seen in the Capitol wearing face paint, no shirt and a furry hat with horns and carrying a US flag attached to a spear.

Chansley, also known as Jake Angeli, calls himself the ‘QAnon Shaman,’ a reference to the apocalyptic and convoluted conspiracy theory spread largely through the internet and promoted by some right-wing extremists.

He is charged with entering a restricted building without lawful authority, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Lonnie Leroy Coffman, 70, of Alabama drove to Washington to attend Trump’s ‘Save America Rally’ in a red pickup packed with an M4 assault rifle, multiple loaded magazines, three handguns and 11 Mason jars filled with homemade napalm, according to court filings.

The grandfather was arrested that evening when he returned to the truck carrying a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun and a .22-caliber derringer pistol. He is charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and carrying a pistol without a license.

Derrick Evans, 35, was a West Virginia lawmaker who streamed video of himself charging into the building with the mob.

Gionet live-streamed for about a half hour from inside the building and could be heard encouraging other protesters not to leave, cussing and saying ‘I´m staying’ and ‘1776 baby,’ prosecutors said. He was arrested in Houston and faces charges of violent and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and knowingly entering a restricted building without lawful authority.

Doug Jensen, 41, of Iowa was seen on video chasing a Black officer up an interior flight of stairs in the Capitol as a mob trailed several steps behind. Jensen, who is white, was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Adam Johnson, 36, of Florida is accused of swiping Pelosi’s lectern during the chaos and smiling as he walked through the Capitol rotunda with it.

He is charged with theft, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Nicholas R. Ochs, 34, of Hawaii, founder of a local Proud Boys chapter, posted a photo of himself on Twitter inside the Capitol grinning widely as he smoked a cigarette.

The FBI said it identified him from photos taken when Ochs campaigned unsuccessfully last year as the Republican nominee for a seat in the Hawaii statehouse.

Robert Keith Packer, 56, of Virginia caused an uproar on social media after being seen in the Capitol wearing a sweatshirt bearing the name ‘Camp Auschwitz,’ a reference to the Nazi concentration camp where about 1.1 million people were killed during World War II.

He was charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and unlawfully entering a restricted building.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies continue to search for the identities of several other individuals who were photographed rioting in the Capitol.

Ariana Grande’s friends have strong doubts about her commitment | The State

Ariana Grande She got engaged last December for the second time in two years with her current boyfriend Dalton gomez, with whom he has remade his love life after the intense relationship he had with his ex Pete davidson. When he announced the happy news through his account Instagram, his mother and brother were quick to congratulate and warmly welcome him to Dalton to his family, from which it was clear that they were delighted with the young real estate agent.

However, the gossip now assure that the singer’s inner circle would not see favorably the speed with which she would have decided to take such an important step after only nine months. According to the portal ET Online, echoing the same information that many other American media are publishing, the fact that the couple spent a lot of time together during the confinement period, without being forced to deal with the harassment of the paparazzi, does not seem to have served to calm certain concerns among his friends.

“Everyone thinks they have rushed and are very skeptical because they think that in the end the relationship will not last long”, has pointed out a source.

Early humans had already developed the skills and tools to survive climate change, study finds

Early humans living two million years ago already had the skills and tools they needed in order to cope with the effects of climate change, study shows.

Archaeologists from the Max Planck Institute studied changes to the environment and habitats of early hominins at the Oldupai Gorge heritage site in Tanzania.

Also known as the ‘Cradle of Humankind’, new field work at the site revealed our ancestors remained stable despite environment changes over 200,000 years.

These early humans stayed in a habitat continuously throughout – despite having to cope with global warming, wildfires, droughts and volcanic eruptions.

It shows migrations ‘out of Africa’ were possible even during the early human periods – as our ancestors possessed the ability to expand into new ecosystems.

Olduvai (now Oldupai) Gorge, known as the Cradle of Humankind, is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Tanzania. Early human used a wide diversity of habitats amidst environmental changes across a 200,000 year-long period

Co-author Professor Michael Petraglia, of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, in Germany, said it is evidence of a behavioural flexibility.

OLDUPAI GORGE WAS THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

The Unesco World Heritage Oldupai Gorge site is in modern Tanzania.

It is located in the Great Rift Valley, between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

It was formed about 30,000 years ago, the result of aggressive geological activity and streams.

The steep ravine is about 30 miles long and 300 feet deep.

The location boasts extraordinary records of extinct human species.

They span several million years and for more than a century experts have been exploring the region to understand where we came from.

He said this started in the context of the dawn of the evolution of the hominins – and helped ‘set the stage for the eventual global, invasive spread of Homo sapiens.’

Excavations at Tanzania’s Oldupai Gorge, previously known as the Olduvai Gorge,  uncovered the presence of hominins – our most primitive ancestors – that lived between two and one point eight million years ago.

The oldest form of stone tools, known as Oldowan, were also unearthed, along with a wide variety of mammal fossils including wild cattle, pigs, hippos, panthers, lions, hyena, primates, reptiles and birds – all had been butchered for food.

The crude Oldowan implements were used to smash open the bones and extract the nutritious marrow from the butchered animals, experts discovered.

Remains of one of the first hominins were found just 350 metres away from this site in deposits dating back 1.82 million years.

Known as Homo habilis, the four foot tall species had a short body, long arms like an ape’s – and a big brain. Its name translates as ‘handy man’ after his tool skills.

Despite having to cope with persistent weather catastrophes, the area remained occupied by early humans – proving they could adapt to climate change.

It turned from lakeside palm groves, idyllic meadows littered with ferns and mosaics of woodland to landscapes burned by natural disasters and dry steppes.

The evidence shows periodic but recurrent land use across a subset of environments – punctuated with times when there is an absence of activity.

Co-author Dr Pastory Bushozi, of Dar es Salaam University, Tanzania, said: ‘The occupation of varied and unstable environments – including after volcanic activity – is one of the earliest examples of adaptation to major ecological transformations.’

The Unesco World Heritage Oldupai Gorge site is located in the Great Rift Valley, between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

It was formed about 30,000 years ago, the result of aggressive geological activity and streams. The steep ravine is about 30 miles long and 300 feet deep.

The location boasts extraordinary records of extinct human species spanning several million years and for more than a century experts have been exploring outcrops.

The latest study published in Nature Communications sheds light on the environmental contexts in which these hominins lived for the first time.

Excavation at Ewass Oldupa uncovered the oldest Oldowan stone tools ever found at Oldupai Gorge, dating to ~2 million years ago and fossils of mammals, reptiles and birds

Hominin occupation of fluctuating and disturbed habitats is unique in the prehistoric records. It shows complex behavioural adaptations among these early humans.

In the face of new challenges they did not substantially alter their toolkits – but instead their technology remained stable over time.

Indicative of their versatility, typical Oldowan stone tools hewn from pebbles and cobbles and sharp-edged flakes continued to be used even as conditions changed.

It shows they had the capacity to continually exploit a multitude of habitats using reliable tools to process plants and cut up animals – over the long term.

Other hominins such as Australopithecines – the species to which the famous early human ancestor ‘Lucy’ belongs – may also have been making stone tools there.

The findings have been published in the journal Nature Communications.

DNA AND GENOME STUDIES USED TO CAPTURE OUR GENETIC PAST

Four major studies in recent times have changed the way we view our  ancestral history.

The Simons Genome Diversity Project study

After analysing DNA from 142 populations around the world, the researchers conclude that all modern humans living today can trace their ancestry back to a single group that emerged in Africa 200,000 years ago.

They also found that all non-Africans appear to be descended from a single group that split from the ancestors of African hunter gatherers around 130,000 years ago.

The study also shows how humans appear to have formed isolated groups within Africa with populations on the continent separating from each other.

The KhoeSan in south Africa for example separated from the Yoruba in Nigeria around 87,000 years ago while the Mbuti split from the Yoruba 56,000 years ago.

The Estonian Biocentre Human Genome Diversity Panel study

This examined 483 genomes from 148 populations around the world to examine the expansion of Homo sapiens out of Africa.

They found that indigenous populations in modern Papua New Guinea owe two percent of their genomes to a now extinct group of Homo sapiens.

This suggests there was a distinct wave of human migration out of Africa around 120,000 years ago.

The Aboriginal Australian study

Using genomes from 83 Aboriginal Australians and 25 Papuans from New Guinea, this study examined the genetic origins of these early Pacific populations.

These groups are thought to have descended from some of the first humans to have left Africa and has raised questions about whether their ancestors were from an earlier wave of migration than the rest of Eurasia.

The new study found that the ancestors of modern Aboriginal Australians and Papuans split from Europeans and Asians around 58,000 years ago following a single migration out of Africa.

These two populations themselves later diverged around 37,000 years ago, long before the physical separation of Australia and New Guinea some 10,000 years ago.

The Climate Modelling study

Researchers from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa used one of the first integrated climate-human migration computer models to re-create the spread of Homo sapiens over the past 125,000 years.

The model simulates ice-ages, abrupt climate change and captures the arrival times of Homo sapiens in the Eastern Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula, Southern China, and Australia in close agreement with paleoclimate reconstructions and fossil and archaeological evidence.

The found that it appears modern humans first left Africa 100,000 years ago in a series of slow-paced migration waves.

They estimate that Homo sapiens first arrived in southern Europe around 80,000-90,000 years ago, far earlier than previously believed.

The results challenge traditional models that suggest there was a single exodus out of Africa around 60,000 years ago.

Sean Spicer mocks Nancy Pelosi using gendered words in Twitter bio

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer called out Nancy Pelosi for describing herself as a mother and grandmother in her Twitter bio – after helping pass a House ban on gender-related language.

Spicer, who served a seven-month stint as President Donald Trump’s first press secretary in 2017, waded back into the political fray on Instagram on Monday with his jab at House Speaker Pelosi.

It came hours after the House passed new rules prohibiting gendered words – including mother and grandmother, which Pelosi uses to describe herself on Twitter.

Spicer took a screengrab of the bio and circled the offending words, writing: ‘Ut oh. Nancy Pelosi’s twitter bio is in violation of her new House rules that prohibit gender specific terms.’

Contrary to Spicer’s assertion, Pelosi’s bio does not violate the new rules, which do not prohibit representatives from using gendered terms, but ordered for them to be removed from ‘official’ House language.

But several commenters on Spicer’s post said Pelosi’s public use of the terms is hypocritical, given that the Democrat leader was part of the majority which approved the new rules on Monday in a 217-206 party-line vote.

‘They made the rules, they brake the rules! [sic]’ one person commented.

‘Pelosi is just a bad punch line in a worse joke!’ another added.

‘What a joke and of course the rules do not apply to ol’ Nancy,’ a third person wrote with an eyeroll emoji.

Democrats said the changes, which came just as a record number of LGBTQ lawmakers were sworn into Congress, are meant to ‘honor all gender identities’.

But they’ve faced significant push-back from critics who’ve called the changes frivolous at best and damaging at worst.

WHICH WORDS ARE CHANGING?

  • The term seamen will be replaced with seafarers.
  • Chairman will become chair.
  • Terms for familial relationships — such as mother, father, daughter, son, sister and brother — will be swapped with terms such as parent, child and sibling.
  • The phrase ‘submit his or her resignation’ will be replaced with ‘resign.’
  • The phrases ‘he or she serves’ and ‘he or she holds’ will be replaced with ‘such Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner’ serves or holds, respectively.
  • The words himself and herself will be replaced with themself.

Former Democratic Rep Tulsi Gabbard led the outrage over the changes on Monday night, saying that the rules essentially ignore the very existence of women.

‘It’s the height of hypocrisy for people who claim to be the champions of rights for women to deny the biological existence of women,’ the former Hawaii congresswoman told Tucker Carlson.

‘This recent rule change at the House voted and passed on today removes references to mothers and fathers, bothers and sisters and sons and daughters from congressional rules and administration, it’s mind blowing’.

The new rules change ‘seamen’ to ‘seafarers,’ ‘chairman’ to ‘chair’ and ‘submit his or her resignation’ to ‘resigns.’

References to fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives and in-laws are to be be changed to ‘parent, child, sibling, spouse, or parent-in-law,’ according to the resolution.

Extended family members would be referred to as ‘child’s parent’ instead of aunt or uncle, stepparents, and siblings-in-law.

‘It shows how out of touch with reality and the struggles of every day Americans people in Congress are,’ Gabbard said.

‘Also as their first act, this new Congress could have been to make sure that elderly Americans are able to get the COVID vaccine now along side front line healthcare workers.

‘Instead of doing something that could help save people’s lives, they are choosing instead to say you can’t say mother and father in this congressional language. It’s astounding.’

Evidence of the new rules could already be heard during the opening prayer which saw the words ‘Amen and A-woman’ uttered by Rep Emanuel Cleaver.

In the past, Congress operated under a binary rule that ‘words importing one gender include the other as well’.

‘Through months of consultation across our caucus and Congress, we have developed a rules package that makes the People’s House more accountable and responsive to all Americans,’ Pelosi wrote in a statement about the changes.

The latest rules see a spectrum of gender identities being acknowledged as well as same-sex relationships.

‘I don’t know how to explain what they think. It defies common sense. There is a biological distinction between men and women and boys and girls. It defies basic science,’ Gabbard said.

Several GOP lawmakers previously denounced the proposed change, including Rep Kevin McCarthy from California, who called it ‘stupid.’

McCarthy previously supported the Defense of Marriage Act in 2011, which outlawed same-sex marriage.

Tulsi Gabbard slams ‘woke’ use of congressional language by says amen and a women

Former Democratic Congresswoman Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has spoken out about new rules in Congress that came into force on Monday banning certain gender-related language.

Among the new rules, members of Congress are required to use ‘gender-inclusive language’.

Democrats claim the changes will promote diversity and inclusion in the 117th Congress. The House approved the package Monday in a 217-206 vote on party lines.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced a new set of rules to govern Congress

The change comes as a record number of LGBTQ lawmakers are joining Congress.

Although the rules do not prevent the use of gendered language, it does rename ‘official’ language.

It sees ‘all gender identities honored by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.’

Tulsi Gabbard, a former Hawaii congresswoman, says that the rules essentially ignore the very existence of women.

‘It’s the height of hypocrisy for people who claim to be the champions of rights for women to deny the biological existence of women,’ Gabbard said to Tucker Carlson on Monday night.

Several witnesses from different locations across Oahu reported seeing a large glowing, blue mass flying over the night sky around 8.30pm Tuesday

‘I was like, ‘hey, come look up there. See if you see what I see.’ They all said yeah.’

According to Moriah, the object appeared to be larger than a telephone pole and was moving ‘so fast’, but did not make any sound.

Intrigued, the couple then followed the UFO in their car for about three miles before stopping on Farrington Highway where they saw it fall into the ocean, prompting them to call the police.

When officers arrived, they saw yet another unidentified white light  that appeared to be traveling in the same direction as the blue object, Moriah said. It then disappeared after passing over a mountain.

Police reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration, but the agency has since said they never received any ‘reports of overdue or missing aircraft.’

A police spokesperson also said they did not have any information on the strange occurrence and the strange sighting remains a mystery.

It comes as a Harvard professor has reignited conspiracy theories about extraterrestrial life and potential alien civilizations that could one day make contact with humans on Earth.

Avi Loeb, the chair of Harvard University’s Astronomy Department, has shared theories about a cigar-shaped space rock believed to be the first object from interstellar space.

Discovered in October 2017 by a telescope in Hawaii millions of miles away, the asteroid is called ‘Oumuamua’ – Hawaiian for messenger from afar arriving first, or scout.

The red-tinged rock is estimated to be possibly 1,300 feet (400 meters) long and zooming away from the Earth and sun at more than 16 miles (26 kilometers) per second.

At the time of the discovery, Loeb received huge backlash from scientists after claiming the object was actually a discarded piece of technology from aliens.

He and a team of researchers at Harvard later published a research paper based on the theory that a quirk of the rock’s acceleration was a result of alien propulsion.

But four years on, Loeb is standing by his theory which he discusses in his new book, Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, that will be released on January 26.

‘Some people do not want to discuss the possibility that there are other civilizations out there,’ he told the New York Post.

‘They believe we are special and unique. I think it’s a prejudice that should be abandoned.’

Loeb believes Oumuamua is more than just a rock and that the current theory could be a narrow-minded view of something potentially much greater.

‘What would happen if a caveman saw a cellphone? He’s seen rocks all his life, and he would have thought it was just a shiny rock,’ he explained.

‘The only way to look for [alien civilizations] is to look for their trash, like investigative journalists who look through celebrities’ trash.

AN INTERSTELLAR VISITOR: WHAT IS ‘OUMUAMUA AND WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT IT?

A cigar-shaped asteroid named ‘Oumuamua sailed past Earth at 97,200mph (156,428km/h) in October.

It was first spotted by a telescope in Hawaii on 19 October, and was observed 34 separate times in the following week.

It is named after the Hawaiian term for ‘scout’ or ‘messenger’ and passed the Earth at about 85 times the distance to the moon.

It was the first interstellar object seen in the solar system, and it baffled astronomers.

Initially, it was thought the object could be a comet.

However, it displays none of the classic behaviour expected of comets, such as a dusty, water-ice particle tail.

The asteroid is up to one-quarter mile (400 meters) long and highly-elongated – perhaps 10 times as long as it is wide.

That aspect ratio is greater than that of any asteroid or asteroid observed in our solar system to date.

But the asteroid’s slightly red hue — specifically pale pink — and varying brightness are remarkably similar to objects in our own solar system.

Around the size of the Gherkin skyscraper in London, some astronomers were convinced it was piloted by aliens due to the vast distance the object traveled without being destroyed – and the closeness of its journey past the Earth.

Alien hunters at SETI – the Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence based at Berkeley University, California said there was a possibility the rock was ‘an alien artefact’.

But scientists from Queen’s University Belfast took a good look at the object and said it appears to be an asteroid, or ‘planetesimal’ as originally thought.

Researchers believe the cigar-shaped asteroid had a ‘violent past’, after looking at the light bouncing off its surface.

They aren’t exactly sure when the violent collision took place, but they believe the lonely asteroid’s tumbling will continue for at least a billion years.

Girl Scouts accuses the Boy Scouts of using unfair and ‘damaging’ recruitment war tactics

The Girl Scouts are continuing their legal battle against the Boy Scouts of America, accusing the group of using their phrases and ‘damaging’ marketing tactics to poach female recruits.

In the spring of 2018 the once boys-only program announced it will change its name to Scouts BSA to accommodate girls and started accepting female recruits in early 2019.

Since then, there’s been an escalating recruitment war between the two organizations and some girls have unwittingly joined The Boy Scouts due to misleading and confusing ads, the Girl Scouts’ lawyers say.

On Thursday lawyers for the Girl Scouts filed papers in Manhattan federal court to repel an effort by the Boy Scouts to toss out a trademark infringement lawsuit the Girl Scouts filed in 2018.

The Girl Scouts claim that the Boy Scouts has unfairly recruited girls lately, according to the legal briefs.

The Girl Scouts claim that The Boy Scouts used their phrases such as ‘scouts’ and ‘scouting’ in ads targeting girls and in Illinois a Boy Scouts council improperly used pictures of Girl Scouts to promote a Boy Scouts sign-up night event.

They cited several examples of Boy Scout councils returning registration checks to families who mistakenly though they were enrolling their kids in The Girl Scouts.

Last month, lawyers for the Boy Scouts asked a judge to reject claims that the Boy Scouts cannot use ‘scouts’ and ‘scouting’ in its recruitment of girls without infringing trademarks, calling the lawsuit ‘utterly meritless.’

The Boy Scouts on Saturday pointed to legal arguments in which it blames the Girl Scouts for reacting to its expansion plans with ‘anger and alarm’ and said the Girl Scouts launched a ‘ground war’ to spoil plans by the Boy Scouts to include more girls.

In a statement, the Boy Scouts said it expanded program offerings for girls ‘after years of requests from families’ who wanted their boys and girls both participating in its character and leadership programs or for other reasons, including a desire to become an Eagle Scout.

‘We applaud every organization that builds character and leadership in children, including the Girl Scouts of the USA, and believe that all families and communities benefit from the opportunity to select the programs that best fit their needs,’ the statement said.

In its filing, the Girl Scouts said the Boy Scouts’ marketing of expanded services for girls was ‘extraordinary and highly damaging to Girl Scouts’ and had set off an ‘explosion of confusion.’

Lawyers for the Girl Scouts claim that after the Boy Scouts opened to girls, they started using Girl Scouts’ intellectual property, employing targeted advertising with terms such as ‘Scout, Scouts, Scouting, Scout Me In and Scouts BSA,’ the lawyers wrote.

‘As a result of Boy Scouts’ infringement, parents have mistakenly enrolled their daughters in Boy Scouts thinking it was Girl Scouts,’ the lawyers said, adding that this never occurred before 2018.

The Girls Scouts said they can prove there are ‘rampant instances of confusion and mistaken instances of association between Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts’ after the Boy Scouts targeted girls and their parents with marketing and recruiting communications in ways it never has before.

The organization cited proof from a narrow subset of documents turned over by 19 of 250 local Boy Scout councils, including evidence that registration fees sometimes were returned to parents who mistakenly thought they registered girls for the Girl Scouts.

It said repeated instances of confusion and interference at the local level by the Boy Scouts was a tiny fraction of what was occurring nationwide.

Each of dozens of times the Girl Scouts complained about unfair marketing, the Boy Scouts responded by blaming individuals, churches or others for what they said was an isolated incident, the lawyers said.

In its statement, though, the Boy Scouts said: ‘To imply that confusion is a prevailing reason for their choice is not only inaccurate – with no legally admissible instance of this offered to date in the case – but it is also dismissive of the decisions of more than 120,000 girls and young women who have joined Cub Scouts or Scouts BSA since the programs became available to them.’

‘The parties’ programs, which have many similarities, are now directly competitive,’ the Girls Scouts maintained.

‘According to Boy Scouts, blame for the rampant marketplace confusion lies at everyone’s feet but its own,’ they wrote.

Both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, like other major youth organizations, have seen declines in membership in recent years as competition grew pre-pandemic from sports leagues and busy family schedules.

The Boy Counts contend that they have used the word ‘Scout’ alone for more than 100 years and weren’t trying to copy the Girl Scouts.

It said hundreds of thousands of pages of documents produced in the court case and more than 40 depositions of witnesses prove the Boy Scouts never engaged in trademark infringement or created consumer confusion.

The lawyers for Girl Scouts said Boy Scouts councils in Illinois acknowledged improperly using the Girl Scouts’ slogan in Cub Scout recruiting materials and pictures of Girl Scouts to promote a Boy Scouts ‘Scouts Sign-Up Night!’

They said a western Massachusetts Boy Scouts council posted a recruiting flyer on Facebook including a photograph of a girl depicted in her Girl Scouts Brownie uniform.

Meanwhile, Ohio Boy Scouts used the Girl Scouts trademark to try to get a local newspaper to write an article, suggesting a storyline entitled ‘Boy and Girl Scouts Looking for Members’ even though the recruitment involved only the Boy Scouts, the lawyers said.

In Seattle, a Boy Scouts council used the Girl Scouts trademark in social media recruiting materials, the lawyers said.

They said confusion has skyrocketed among children, parents, schools and religious organizations and they cited examples in other states, including Florida, Minnesota, Arkansas, Michigan, North Carolina and Hawaii.

Asteroid bigger than the Statue of Liberty will fly past Earth on Christmas Day, NASA says

An asteroid bigger than the Statue of Liberty will fly past Earth at 8:20pm GMT on Christmas Day, according to data from NASA’s Center for Near Earth Studies.

The asteroid, called 2014 SD224, will come within 0.02019 astronomical units, or nearly 1.9 million miles, from the Earth’s surface.

2014 SD224 has a diameter anywhere between 302 and 690 feet (92 to 210 metres) – meaning it could be more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty (305 feet) or bigger than Salisbury Cathedral (404 feet).

As 2014 SD224 flies past Earth, it will be travelling at a speed of 10 kilometres per second or more than 22,000 miles per hour – roughly 30 times the speed of sound.

Despite being around eight times further out than the Moon, the asteroid is classed as a near Earth object (NEO) and is being tracked by the space agency.

The asteroid could be more than twice the size as the Statue of Liberty (305 feet) or Elizabeth Tower (better known as Big Ben) and bigger than Salisbury Cathedral (404 feet)

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPACE ROCKS

An asteroid is a large chunk of rock left over from collisions or the early Solar System. Most are located between Mars and Jupiter in the Main Belt.

A comet is a rock covered in ice, methane and other compounds. Their orbits take them much further out of the Solar System.

A meteor is what astronomers call a flash of light in the atmosphere when debris burns up.

This debris itself is known as a meteoroid. Most are so small they are vapourised in the atmosphere.

If any of this meteoroid makes it to Earth, it is called a meteorite.

Meteors, meteoroids and meteorites normally originate from asteroids and comets.

Although 2014 SD224 – which can be tracked on NASA’s website – is at a distance of 1.9 million miles away, this is relatively close in astronomical terms.

For this reason, 2014 SD224 is defined by NEO, although it’s not expected to do damage.

NEOs are an asteroid or comet whose orbit brings it into or through a zone between approximately 91 million and 121 million miles (195 million km) from the Sun, meaning that it can pass within about 30 million miles (50 million km) of Earth’s orbit.

If the object is larger than 460 feet (140 meters) across, it is considered a potentially hazardous object (PHO).

‘NEOs are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth’s neighbourhood,’ said NASA.

‘Composed mostly of water ice with embedded dust particles, comets originally formed in the cold outer planetary system while most of the rocky asteroids formed in the warmer inner solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

‘The scientific interest in comets and asteroids is due largely to their status as the relatively unchanged remnant debris from the solar system formation process some 4.6 billion years ago.’

According to publicly available NASA data, there have been 24,629 NEOs discovered, as of Tuesday.

It is estimated that there are about 25,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs) larger than 460 feet (140 metres).

And there are also an estimated 1,000 NEOs larger than 3,280 feet (one kilometre), highlighting the need to keep track of these space rocks.

On average, Earth is hit by a football pitch-sized rock every 5,000 years, and a civilisation-ending asteroid every one million years, according to NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program.

NEOs are an asteroid or comet whose orbit brings it into or through a zone between approximately 91 million and 121 million miles (195 million km) from the Sun, meaning that it can pass within about 30 million miles (50 million km) of Earth’s orbit (stock image)

‘By continually searching for asteroids, we expect to eventually find the majority of the hundred-meter-scale asteroids over time, as each happens to pass by our planet many years or decades before a possible potential impact,’  Paul Chodas, director at NASA’s Center for Near Earth Studies, told Newsweek.

‘We have already inventoried over 95 percent of the really large asteroids (1 kilometer or 0.62 miles in size and larger) and we know that none of them has any chance of impacting over the next century.’

Last month, it was revealed an asteroid the size of a London bus missed the Earth by just 240 miles (386 km) – on Friday 13th

The space rock, dubbed ‘2020 VT4’, was only spotted 15 hours after its closest approach by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System on Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

Had it come much closer, the 16 to 33 feet (5 to 10 metre) wide body would have burned up in the atmosphere over the South Pacific.

Its orbit brought it about the same distance from the Earth as the International Space Station, making it the closest asteroid to pass by Earth on record to date.

Astronomers are hunting for asteroids larger than 450ft as they can cause ‘catastrophic damage’

Researchers have discovered most of the asteroids that are about a kilometers in size, but are now on the hunt for those that are about 459ft (140m) – as they could cause catastrophic damage.

Although nobody knows when the next big impact will occur, scientists have found themselves under pressure to predict – and intercept – its arrival.

‘Sooner or later we will get… a minor or major impact,’ said Rolf Densing, who heads the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt

It may not happen in our lifetime, he said, but ‘the risk that Earth will get hit in a devastating event one day is very high.’

‘For now, there is little we can do.’

Barack and Michelle Obama are warming up for the holidays in Hawaii, where they were pictured on Tuesday soaking up the sun in some colorful swimwear as they kayaked together in the ocean.

The pair were photographed in the water at Kailua Bay, a stone’s throw from Plantation Estate, their ‘winter White House’ which they rented over the holidays when Barack was in office.

Sporty Michelle appeared to be putting in most of the work while her former President husband sat back and took in the sights, before eventually lending a hand then hauling their kayak to shore.

It’s unclear if they’re staying there this year or if they are somewhere else. The pair are said to be making plans for a different property on the island of Oahu.

Come on, honey, help me out! Michelle Obama did most of the heavy lifting during an outing on the water at Kailua Bay on Tuesday. The former first couple are spending Christmas in Hawaii, as they have done in many previous years

Michelle, 56, went au natural with no make-up and her hair tied off of her face. She was festive in bright orange swimsuit which matched the kayak.

Barack, 59, looked happy and relaxed in a pair of dark swim shorts, sunglasses and a baseball hat. He went shirtless, which revealed a taut physique.

The pair’s two daughters, Sasha and Malia, were not in sight but they are thought to be spending the holidays together.

Michelle appeared to do most of the work on the water, leading their tandem paddle while Barack largely sat back and took in the stunning scenery.

They were joined by what looked like a Secret Service agent on the water, and some other people who were out on small boats nearby.

2020 has been a busy year for the pair which brought them a handful of lucrative contracts.

Michelle’s 2018 book becoming was parlayed into a book/speaking tour and Netflix documentary about her life promoting it.

The documentary was produced by their company, Higher Road.

She also launched a podcast on Netflix and interviewed her husband as one of her first guests during their months at home in quarantine.

The pair also endorsed Joe Biden. Michelle gave a pre-recorded video message for the virtual DNC in his favor.
