India will not have Republic Day chief guest due to global coronavirus situation: MEA

New Delhi, January 14

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday announced that there will be no foreign leader as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations due to the global situation arising out of the coronavirus pandemic.

It will be for the first time in over five decades that India will not have a chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

“Due to the global COVID 19 situation, it has been decided that this year there will not be a foreign head of state or head of government as the chief guest for our Republic Day event,” MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said at a media briefing.

The decision was taken after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s last-minute decision to cancel his visit due to the spread of a mutant strain of the coronavirus in the UK.

India had invited Johnson as the Republic Day chief guest and he accepted India’s invitation, calling it “a great honour”.

However, earlier this month, Johnson cancelled his India visit due to the pandemic that has escalated in the UK following the mutant variant. PTI

Farmers reclaiming the lost republic: P Sainath

Vishav Bharti

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 9

Hailing the farmers’ call for holding Republic Day parade in Delhi on January 26, eminent journalist P Sainath said farmers of the country are reclaiming the republic.

He is in Chandigarh to deliver a lecture on farmers uprising on Sunday; it is being organised by Citizens for Farmers.

Sainath said “the way this government destroyed institute-after-institute, the idea of our republic was under threat”. “Now, the way farmers have risen against this, it has emerged as a hope to save the republic,” he said.

He termed the farmers’ call for tractor parade on Republic Day a historic event and said it is people’s parade and every citizen should support the call.

Sainath said the way farmers uprising has countered every strategy of the government, whether it was corporate owned media or paid troll army, it is simply remarkable.

He said the government’s every plan has failed to sabotage this movement. “The Prime Minister is on an aggressive offensive, holding activity-after-activity, then asking a section of cabinet to play ‘good cop’; divide the leaders on regional, religion or caste lines, they have unleashed their troll armies, which includes some sold out intellectuals too. After all these remain ineffective, now they are dilly-dallying with so that the farmers’ movement wears out and die,” Sainath said.

“But I must tell you. The government is on the wrong path. I have been a student of history. So I can tell you that this movement has many parallels to the movements started against the colonial rule. Even then the laws had to be repealed. I am hopeful this time the same happens,” he said.

He said in the last three years the middle classes of the country have shown sympathy towards farmers, which was not the case earlier.

Sainath also questioned the role of corporate-owned media during the entire agitation.

He said the biggest media owners of this country are the biggest beneficiaries of these laws. “So a large section of media can’t take a line which goes against the interest of their owners,” he said.

Republican congressman slams Donald Trump for ‘banana republic c**p’

A Republican representative lashed out at President Donald Trump Wednesday for not calling off the protesters who descended on the Capitol building Wednesday, claiming it’s some ‘banana republic crap.’

Congressman Mike Gallagher posted a video to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon saying: ‘Right now I am sheltered in place in my office because we have protesters who have stormed the Capitol – clashing with Capitol Police, forcing their way into Statutory Hall. The Vice President of the United States was just rushed off the floor of the House by Secret Service.’

‘This is Banana Republic crap that we’re watching happen right now,’ The Wisconsin representative continued.

Gallagher is a retired Marine Captain who voted 93.8 per cent of the time in line with Trump during his first term and 84.2 per cent in his second.

Several other Republicans started demanding Trump to ‘call off’ the siege thousands of his supporters carried out on the Capitol and demand Americans be encouraged voice their protests in other ways.

‘This is what the president has caused today, this insurrection,’ Republican Utah Senator Mitt Romney said of the chaotic scene at the Capitol.

Republican Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin released a nearly two-minute video on Wednesday while sheltering in his office demanding President Donald Trump call off the siege his supporters carried out on the Capitol

'This is Banana Republic crap that we're watching happen right now,' he said, adding: 'Mr. President, you have got to stop this. You are the only person who can call this off. Call if off. The election is over. Call it off!'

Gallagher said in his nearly two-minute video as he sheltered in his office on Capitol Hill that his Republican colleagues assured him objecting to the Electoral College votes would start a debate, but not result in anything bigger.

The representative said they were sorely mistaken, as is evident by the attack on the Capitol.

‘The objectors over the last few days have told me there is no problem with just having a debate. ‘We know we’re not going to succeed, so we’re just going to object. We’re going to have a debate, we’ll voice people’s concerns and then we won’t actually overturn our entire system of representative government. So nothing bad will happen. They’ll be no cost to this effort.’,’ Gallagher said.

‘This is the cost of this effort,’ he continued. ‘This is the cost of countenancing an effort by Congress to overturn the election and telling thousands of people that there is a legitimate shot of overturning the election today. Even though you know that is not true.’

Gallagher demanded: ‘We have got to stop this. Mr. President, you have got to stop this. You are the only person who can call this off. Call if off. The election is over. Call it off! This is bigger than you. It’s bigger than any member of Congress. It’s about the United States of America, which is more important than any politician. Call it off. This is over.’

About an hour after Gallagher’s video – and other Republicans called for an end to the assault on the Capitol – Trump released a video doing just that.

He told his supporters to ‘go home’ in a video posted to Twitter hours after he addressed and stoked the crowd gathered on the Ellipse who traveled to Washington D.C. to protest the results of the presidential election.

Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox News before the video was released that he called Trump about the situation at the Capitol.

‘I think we need to make a statement, make sure that we can calm individuals down,’ the minority leader said he told Trump.

‘This is un-American what’s going on, and it has to stop,’ he added.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s former close adviser, who also served as George W. Bush’s special assistant, blasted Trump, claiming he should have addressed the country sooner.

‘The fact that Donald Trump hasn’t appeared on TV to condemn this mob and these terrorists – who are committing INSURRECTION – is a dereliction of his oath to preserve, protect, and defense the Constitution of the United States of America,’ Scott Jennings wrote on Twitter before the video of the president’s remarks was released.

Other Republicans bluntly blamed the president.

Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger told CNN that President Trump was a ‘coward’ and that the insurrection in the Capitol is a ‘coup.’

‘Anywhere around the globe we would call this a coup attempt,’ he said, adding that Trump should publicly concede the election to Biden to help end the divisiveness.

After Trump’s remarks to a massive crowd of his most staunch supporters, a large section broke off to parch to the Capitol and storm the steps.

Hundreds were able to get inside the building, interrupting Congress certifying the election for Joe Biden.

Trump released a video later in the day urging his supporters to 'go home' ¿ after first addressing them on the Ellipse earlier in the day, stoking claims of a 'stolen' election

Vice President Mike Pence was evacuated from the Senate chamber shortly after 2 p.m., along with Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, the president pro temp who is in the line of succession for the presidency.

Protesters could be heard banging on the doors as senators attempted to continue their debate on the electoral college count. One protester waved the Confederate flag as they tried to get inside.

An officer with an orange POLICE badge across his chest appeared on the floor with what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon, standing between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, the top party leaders.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the entire chamber was evacuated before the breach occurred. As they rushed away, Senate parliamentary staff grabbed hold of the boxes containing the electoral college certificates and took them with them.

England player ratings as Grealish stars in victory over Republic of Ireland

Harry Maguire captained England to victory against Republic of Ireland at Wembley.

Maguire was left out of the Three Lions squad by Gareth Southgate in September following his arrest in Mykonos.

But he wore the armband and opened the scoring in a comfortable win.

The Manchester United man was also rock solid defensively, as he made up for his last outing at Wembley when he was sent off in a 1-0 defeat against Denmark.

After Maguire’s early header, England were in complete control. Jadon Sancho added a second before the break, before Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second half penalty wrapped things up.

Here are John Cross’ player ratings from Wembley…

England were too good on the night

Nick Pope 6

Little chance to impress in his 45 minute audition. Henderson got second half.

Michael Keane 7

His form this season has warranted more opportunities. Grasped this one.

Harry Maguire 8

Wore the armband, scored an opener, this was redemption of sorts.

Harry Maguire gets England on their way

Tyrone Mings 7

Spoke with authority and confidence this week – played with it as well.

Reece James 7

Has a mix of everything – strong defensively, good crosser. Terrific talent.

Mason Mount 7

Showed it doesn’t have to be either or with Grealish. Both played well.

Mount did well in a deep midfield role

Harry Winks 8

Assist for Maguire’s opener, offered good quality in England’s midfield.

Bukayo Saka 7

More confident than last outing. Denied by Randolph and won a penalty.

Jadon Sancho 7

Scored with nice mix of close control, trickery and inch perfect finish.

Jack Grealish 9 MOTM

Socks rolled down, running everywhere, assist, another eye catching display.

Another excellent showing

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 7

Looked lively as he led the again, proving to be excellent back-up, top penalty.

Dean Henderson (Pope, 46 mins) 6

Phil Foden (Grealish, 61 mins) 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Mings, 61 mins) 6

Tammy Abraham (Calvert-Lewin, 62 mins) 6

5 talking points as England outclass Republic of Ireland to record easy win

England were just too good for the Republic of Ireland as Gareth Southgate’s men recorded a comfortable 3-0 friendly win at Wembley.

The hosts took the lead on 18 minutes as Harry Maguire headed home from Harry Winks’ delicious cross.

And it was 2-0 just after the half-an-hour mark as Jadon Sancho cut inside from the left and fired a low shot into the bottom-right hand corner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin got his second England goal when he converted from the spot ten minutes after half-time to round off the scoring on a thoroughly satisfactory night for the home side.

The Three Lions are next in action when they take on Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday, while Ireland face Wales on the same day.

Here are five talking points from England’s convincing victory…

Maguire redemption continues

Harry Maguire gave England the lead

What a difference a month can make.

Maguire’s last outing in an England shirt came to a premature end after just 31 minutes when the Manchester United defender was sent off in the 1-0 defeat to Denmark in October.

It capped off what had been a miserable spell for the 27-year-old, with things so bad that there were suggestions he should take a break from football to clear his head following his turbulent time off the pitch.

Yet to his eternal credit Maguire has battled back from that difficult period ever since, with his performances for United vastly improving recently.

He was handed the captain’s armband for his country for the first time tonight and put in an assured showing, with a great header to give his side the lead and a decent display at the back showing all his best qualities.

Here’s hoping Maguire has now put his nightmare few months behind him once and for all and will continue his redemption.

Why not Grealish AND Mount?

Jack Grealish again performed well for England

Much of the build-up to the game centred around who of Jack Grealish or Mason Mount would be selected in the starting line-up.

Yet in the end both players made the cut in Southgate’s 11, with Grealish out wide and Mount occupying the central position in the 3-4-3 formation.

Both looked bright throughout, with Grealish constantly threatening on the flanks and setting up England’s second goal and Mount tidy in possession and dangerous with set-pieces.

In games against inferior opposition, there is no reason why the two cannot play in the same team, and they provide plenty of food for thought going forward, especially when England need to break down a stubborn defence.

Mings shines on and off pitch

Tyrone Mings is already becoming a leader for England on and off the pitch

Tyrone Mings came out with a huge amount of credit for the way he dealt with the press in the fallout to Greg Clarke’s resignation as FA chairman on Tuesday.

But he let his football do the talking tonight, with the Aston Villa man again faultless in an England shirt.

While he wasn’t particularly troubled by a toothless Irish attack, he was composed in possession and vocal in barking out orders to his teammates.

The injury to Joe Gomez means Mings may well be given even more minutes in an England shirt going forward.

And the way things are going for him both on and off the pitch it would be no surprise to see Mings become a first-choice pick in the centre of defence by the time the Euros roll around next summer.

Calvert-Lewin taking lessons from Kane

Dominic Calvert-Lewin slammed home his penalty

Whisper it quietly… but Calvert-Lewin is looking more and more similar to Harry Kane every day.

The Everton forward was a constant handful again tonight, and when Bukayo Saka was brought down in the box he made it very clear to everybody that he would be the man to take the spot-kick.

Even his technique for the penalty resembled Kane, with a little stutter before he thumped it into the top corner to make it 3-0.

It’s easy to remember Kane was a late bloomer, and only really hit his clinical best following loan spells in the lower levels – similar to Calvert-Lewin.

With Calvert-Lewin now 23 and in the form of his life, could he follow in the Tottenham man’s footsteps?

Bellingham makes bow

Gareth Southgate gave detailed instructions to Jude Bellingham before he came on

Jude Bellingham became the third-youngest man ever to play for England when he came off the bench with 20 minutes to go.

At just 17 years and 137 days old, it is fair to say the Dortmund star has a pretty exciting career ahead of him, and he certainly didn’t seem overawed by the occasion tonight.

Bellingham slotted into midfield and looked confident with the ball at his feet, and couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable debut.

It would be fascinating to see Southgate give him some more minutes against Belgium or Iceland, but even if he doesn’t this was surely just the first of many, many caps for Bellingham.

Military in the Dominican Republic raped stepdaughter from age 10 until she was pregnant | The State

A member of the Dominican Republic Air Force raped his stepdaughter from the age of 10 to getting her pregnant at 16, according to reports this week from media in that country such as Diario Libre.

The Public Ministry of La Vega, the body that presented the accusation in the case, handles evidence that indicates that the suspect, whose identity has not been revealed to protect the victim, in principle denied paternity.

However, a DNA test confirmed the relationship and advanced the investigations of the authorities.

It is unknown whether the girl’s mother knew of the sexual abuse or not.

The Judicial Office of Permanent Services of that province issued three months in prison to the man as a measure of coercion.

According to the information available at the time, the alleged criminal forced the minor to maintain relations with him at gunpoint with his regulation weapon.

The pervert allegedly threatened the girl with death on several occasions and took advantage when he was alone with her to rape her in the house where they resided.

The request for a coercion measure indicates that the 42-year-old military man sexually abused his stepdaughter since 2012, when she was 10 years old. The letter, cited by the aforementioned media, refers to the firearm with which the officer threatened the minor, whom he kept subjected to violence until she was 16 years old and became pregnant.

The Dominican, who faces charges of aggravated domestic violence and incest, would have indicated to the victim that if he revealed that he was the father of her son, he would kill her.

As a result of the threat, the girl went to the Court of Boys, Girls and Adolescents where a DNA test was ordered that proved paternity.

In September of this year, the incident was reported to the Unit for Comprehensive Attention to Gender Violence, Intrafamily and Sexual Crimes of the La Vega Prosecutor’s Office, which initiated the investigation.

Prosecutor Berenice García, from said Unit, is leading the case.

The affected woman who underwent a psychological evaluation presented very high levels of anxiety and symptoms of depression.
