According to Mayor Valérie Plante, more than 18 centimeters have fallen to the ground on the island of Montreal since last night.

It is the hospitals, access to public transport networks and major arteries that will be cleared as a priority as part of this second full load operation of the 2020-2021 season.

“With a view to facilitating operations, I particularly invite motorists to stay on the lookout for signage and to be aware of the various measures put in place, in particular in connection with the curfew in force”, indicated Mayor Plante by press release.

“On the first winter load, when the majority of people were on vacation or telecommuting, we had about 15% less tows than a comparable load. Thank you to the citizens who understood the importance of respecting the signage, ”said the person in charge of citizen services, Jean-François Parenteau.

Move your vehicle before curfew

As you have to move your vehicle before the start of the curfew, in effect from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., the City has had to adapt by installing parking prohibition signs before 7 p.m., instead of until 8 p.m., as it is. usually is.

“Citizens must ensure at all times that they comply with the applicable parking rules and move their vehicle in accordance with the decree,” the City said. In the exceptional situation where a citizen would be forced to move his vehicle because of the load after the curfew comes into effect, the SPVM will use its best judgment. “

It should be noted that nearly 3,000 parking spaces have been added, for a total of 8,400. They are all available free of charge in many facilities, the list of which is available online here.

Due to the curfew, it is possible to park your vehicle in an off-street parking lot run by the Agence de Mobilité durable, between 3 p.m. and 5 a.m., free of charge on snow loading days. But “parking bans for loading prevail for these parking spaces as well”, reminded the City.

Due to the curfew, snow removal vehicles will stop activating their sirens after 7:30 p.m. to alert people who forgot to move their car. “So be doubly vigilant”, we warned.

Sharjah: The Traffic and Patrols Department of the Sharjah Police General Command launched an electronic traffic campaign titled “Our goal is your safety”. It aims to enhance traffic safety by reminding drivers and road users to follow general traffic instructions and to reduce accidents. The campaign will continue until the end of this month,

Captain Saud Al Shaiba, Director of the media and traffic awareness branch at Sharjah Police, said, “The launch of the campaign came in conjunction with the start of the second semester, the return of students to their schools, and the beginning of the new year in which Sharjah Police will launch 12 traffic campaigns, all aiming to achieve traffic safety.” He explained that awareness of community members, whether they are vehicle drivers or pedestrians, is important to the success of the campaign, as they are partners in achieving safety. They need to be reminded of the need to adhere to all traffic laws and guidelines that enhance their safety and security.

The campaign is being carried out electronically. It provides educational lectures targeting school students and community members through visual communications, as well as awareness of driving on police accounts on social media platforms in three languages — Arabic, English, and Urdu — in order to remind them of the correct procedures that must be adhered to when driving their vehicles or crossing the road to ensure their safety.

Precautions to be followed

Capt. Al Shaiba urged drivers of the need to take into account the condition of the road and not to be distracted by others while driving, and use seat belt in addition to adhering to the speed limit on the road, not using the phone while driving, in addition to the need of pedestrians to cross the road at designated places.

Captain Al Shaiba emphasised that the intensification of traffic campaigns throughout the year is aimed at educating members of society, which are based on last year’s statistics, which contributes to finding solutions to the traffic phenomena that were previously monitored, calling on drivers to abide by traffic laws.

Intel launches RealSense ID, facial recognition tech that uses the company’s depth-sensing cameras

Intel launched RealSense ID yesterday, a facial recognition solution that relies on its RealSense depth-sensing technology (via Gizmodo). RealSense started as a Kinect-style camera for touch-free interaction, but RealSense ID seems like Intel’s attempt to reposition its camera business towards secure, on-device facial recognition first, while also potentially putting the company in the crossfire of controversy.

RealSense ID builds on Intel’s depth-sensing technology with a neural network for identifying faces, a dedicated system-on-a-chip, and a secure element that encrypts and processes user data. The device should learn and adapt to a face over time, working around facial hair, a variety of different skin tones, and face masks, Gizmodo writes. The tech is available on a module that can be integrated into other products or as a standalone peripheral that can be plugged into a computer.

Intel’s RealSense ID.
Image: Intel

Intel’s RealSense tech has been knocking around for several years, popping up in odd, tech demo use cases like inserting your face into Fallout 4, and more useful ones like unlocking a laptop with Windows Hello. Intel suggests this new application of RealSense could be used in a variety of settings, like ATMs, registers, and smart locks. What the company doesn’t mention is the other popular use of facial recognition: governments and law enforcement agencies tracking and profiling people.

Just in the last year, facial recognition software created by Huawei was used to track the persecuted Uighur minority in China. And in the US this past summer, facial recognition tech was used by the New York City Police Department to track a Black Lives Matter activist accused of assault. Intel says it processes facial recognition on-device, but it’s not clear how that would work to give you access to a bank’s ATMs or at cash registers. Beyond the potential for abuse, facial recognition software has been found to be biased for both race and gender, opening up the possibility for false positives. For example, a version of Amazon’s facial recognition software Rekognition, had a harder time identifying people if they were female or dark-skinned than if they were white men.

Intel has taken steps to address the potential for bias in RealSense ID by building out a more diverse sample of faces to train RealSense on. “We’ve done extensive data collection of all ethnicities from Asia, Europe, Middle East Africa,” Intel told VentureBeat at a press briefing for the new device. Intel says RealSense ID has one-in-a-million chance of falsely identifying someone, but we’ll have to wait and see if outside researchers find flaws.

Facial recognition isn’t the only future Intel imagines for RealSense. For this year’s digital CES, the company announced RealSense Touchless Control Software (TCS), which uses Intel’s RealSense Depth Camera to allow you to interact with a touchscreen by hovering your finger over it, rather than touching it. Like facial recognition, the new application makes a lot of sense for a world still dealing with a pandemic, and shows there’s still some room for RealSense’s motion controller past.

Intel’s RealSense ID peripheral is available for pre-order now for $99, and the RealSense ID Module is available in a pack of 10 for $750. Intel plans to start shipping both in March.

How did the last battle of the chicken burger start?

Chick-fil-A had offered its traditional “original” chicken burger for many years. with a thick fillet of breaded chicken breast, pressure fried on a bun with butter and pickles. Also counting on the spicy and luxury versions of their sandwich.

Seeing the success of Chick-fil-A, Popeyes would start the battle between fast food chains when he decided to launch his own chicken sandwich in August 2019 and even tweeted a sarcastic message towards his competition.
