The Speaker of the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, Nancy pelosi, confirmed this Thursday that his delegation will begin next week the process that will facilitate the approval of the economic package with stimulus checks proposed by the president Joe biden without the support of the Republicans.
To that end, the lower house is preparing to pass a budget resolution, the first step to pass legislation through the mechanism known as “reconciliation”.
Through such a provision, Democrats could unilaterally usher in measures with just 51 votes, while avoiding the supermajority of 60 required to pass most pieces of legislation.
Once the House completes said legislative procedure, the Senate must do the same. As the leader said at a conference this morning on Capitol Hill, the resolution should be finalized by the end of this week.
Although Democrats have a slight majority in both the House and Senate, they need Republican votes to pass the $ 1.9 billion “Economic Rescue Plan” which not only includes a third stimulus check for a base amount of $ 1,400, also a weekly extension to unemployment benefits, an extension of the moratorium on evictions and an increase in the minimum wage to $ 15, among other provisions.
But since Republicans are not in sight to yield to pressure from Democrats, the majority delegation is considering techniques like the one above to pass the stimulus package expeditiously.
In this sense, the spokeswoman added that she hopes that the members of her Party can achieve the republican support required to give way in a bipartisan manner to the Executive’s measures without the need for the aforementioned mechanism. But that, still, they must be prepared in case they do not convince their political rivals.
“We have to be ready,” Pelosi said.
Earlier this thursday Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, reported that that legislative body is also mobilizing to make way for a budget resolution as soon as next week.
