NYPD shot delusional man who threatened with knife in Queens home

NYPD alleges it tried to negotiate in vain

A man who appeared to be hallucinating inside a Queens (NYC) house was shot by police after he pounced on them with a knife, according to NYPD.

Officials who held a press conference at the scene last night said it was the second time officers responded to the house yesterday on 64th Street near 55th Avenue in Maspeth, and the third this week after calls about the same man.

NYPD chief Terence Monahan said at the press conference that the unidentified man has a history of mental illness and admitted to police that he had been using drugs.

The shooting happened when the man was inside the basement with a relative around 6:20 p.m. When the police arrive, spoke to the officers for about 10 minutes before lashing out at them with a large knife, according to the official report.

One officer activated a taser pistol at him, while another fired his weapon twice. The wounded man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition., according New York Post.

NYPD was at the house on January 6 and again yesterday morning. At that time the subject was taken to a local hospital due to his hallucinations and released hours later, shortly before the last incident. Authorities said the victim indicated that he was contemplating suicide, bounded Pix11.
