Mason Greenwood was forced to train alone after reporting for Manchester United duty for the first time since his England shame.

Striker Greenwood was kicked out of the England squad along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, for breaching Covid-19 protocols.

The pair were sent home by boss Gareth Southgate after sneaking two women into England’s hotel in Reykjavik following their 1-0 UEFA Nations League win over Iceland.

On arrival at United’s AON Training Complex, Greenwood was told he had to train away from the rest of the United squad, because of the potential coronavirus risk.

It is understood Greenwood underwent a light training session, under the supervision of United’s fitness staff, away from the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

The 18-year-old, who underwent a coronavirus test in the wake of his international duty protocol breach, is set to rejoin United’s squad from early next week.

Young striker Greenwood returned to Carrington on Thursday

Despite United releasing a statement in which they expressed their “disappointment” over Greenwood’s conduct, because the episode happened on international duty, the club are unlikely to formally discipline him.

Greenwood, who forced his way into United’s first-team last season, scoring 17 goals, is pushing for a starting place in their Premier League opener, at home to Crystal Palace, a week tomorrow.

Fellow United striker Marcus Rashford admitted the success of arch rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in winning the title in recent seasons is a huge motivating factor ahead of the new campaign.

“I think that’s natural for anyone who plays for the club or anyone who’s from Manchester,” said Rashford. “We have to use all that as motivation to keep improving as a team.

“But we can’t lose sight of what’s important, and that’s our own team’s development and to keep improving.”
