GOP seethes at Eric Swalwell’s role in impeachment hearing after compromising security for spy tryst

Republicans have reacted with outrage after Nancy Pelosi appointed Congressman Eric Swalwell as one of nine impeachment managers – despite his having an alleged affair with a Chinese spy.

Swalwell further angered Donald Trump’s allies by comparing the president to Osama Bin Laden.

The Californian congressman was asked on Wednesday about the difference between Trump whipping the Capitol rioters into a frenzy, and those who actually stormed the Capitol themselves.

‘Osama Bin Laden did not enter U.S. soil on September 11, but it was widely acknowledged that he was responsible for inspiring the attack on our country,’ Swalwell told PBS.

Eric Swalwell, a California congressman, on Wednesday appeared on PBS News

‘And the president, with his words, using the word ‘fight’ – that is hate speech that inspired and radicalized people to storm the Capitol.’

When asked directly whether he was comparing Trump to Bin Laden, Swalwell replied: ‘I’m comparing the words of a individual who would incite and radicalize somebody, as Osama Bin Laden did, to what President Trump did.

‘You don’t actually have to commit the violence yourself, but if you call others to violence, that itself is a crime.’

Swalwell, 40, was named among the nine impeachment managers on Tuesday.

He and his colleagues are in charge of making the case that the president should be impeached for a second time.

On Wednesday the House voted to impeach him. The motion will now pass to the Senate, which will not consider the matter until after Trump leaves the White House on January 20.

Swalwell on December 8 was reported by Axios to have been involved in a lengthy relationship with a woman later discovered to be a Chinese spy.

Swalwell has refused to say whether he was physically intimate with Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang, during their friendship, asserting the matter is classified.

A number of top House Republicans signed a letter demanding that Pelosi remove Swalwell from the Intelligence Committee.

Pelosi and Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy were both briefed on the matter in 2015.

Swalwell was tipped off in 2015 that she was a Chinese agent.

She fled the country as the FBI investigated her and her infiltration efforts, which also saw her become friendly with other California politicians and have sex with two mayors from the Midwest, in encounters caught by FBI surveillance.

On Wedesday night, Tucker Carlson used his Fox News show to express astonishment at Swalwell’s appointment.

‘He doesn’t sleep on national security threats, he sleeps with them,’ Carlson said. ‘It’s for the greater good. Today Eric Swalwell, his wild intelligence oats once more.’

Carlson’s guest, conservative author Mark Steyn, described him as being ‘compromised’ and ‘playing for the other team’.

‘Eric Swalwell, the Chinese Politburo’s man on the impeachment management team,’ Steyn said.

Darrell Issa, a Republican congressman for California, spoke out against Swalwell’s appointment, as did Marjorie Taylor Green, the QAnon-promoting Republican congresswoman for Georgia.

‘After China’s #COVID19 virus has killed over 381,000 Americans, @SpeakerPelosi names @ericswalwell 1 of 9 impeachment managers,’ she tweeted.

‘Rep Swalwell had a sexual relationship with a CHINESE SPY!

‘Dems might as well go public on how they are selling out to China!

‘What a betrayal!’

Elise Stefanik, congresswoman for New York, said Swalwell was ‘compromised by the Chinese Communist Party’.

Cabinet Committee on Security approves Tejas deal worth Rs 48,000 crore

New Delhi, January 13

In a major decision, the government on Wednesday approved the procurement of 83 indigenously-developed light combat aircraft Tejas for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.

In a tweet, Singh said the deal will be a “game-changer” for self-reliance in defence manufacturing in India.

“The CCS chaired by PM Sh. @narendramodi today approved the largest indigenous defence procurement deal worth about 48000 crores to strengthen IAF’s fleet of homegrown fighter jet ‘LCA-Tejas’,” he said.

The defence minister said Tejas is going to be the backbone of the fighter fleet of the Indian Air Force in years to come.

Around three years back, the IAF had issued an initial tender for procurement of 83 Tejas aircraft, a four-and-half generation combat jet.

“LCA-Tejas incorporates a large number of new technologies many of which were never attempted in India. The indigenous content of LCA-Tejas is 50 percent in Mk1A variant which will be enhanced to 60 percent,’ Singh said.

The defence minister said that aircraft maker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has already set up second-line manufacturing facilities at its Nasik and Bengaluru divisions.

“Equipped with the augmented infrastructure the HAL will steer LCA-Mk1A production for timely deliveries to the IAF,” he said.

Singh said the Tejas programme would act as a catalyst for transforming the Indian aerospace manufacturing ecosystem into a vibrant, self-sustaining one.

“I thank the Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi for this historic decision taken by the CCS today, “ the defence minister said. PTI

Twitter bans QAnon supporters, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn

Twitter has suspended prominent backers of the QAnon conspiracy theory, citing a potential for “offline harm.” NBC News reporter Ben Collins reported the ban of former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump attorney Sidney Powell, and former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins. Other major QAnon accounts have apparently been banned as well.

Twitter told NBC News that the accounts were suspended under Twitter’s “coordinated harmful activity” ban. “We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behavior that has the potential to lead to offline harm, and given the renewed potential for violence surrounding this type of behavior in the coming days, we will permanently suspend accounts that are solely dedicated to sharing QAnon content,” a spokesperson said.

Flynn and Powell have both promoted theories linked to QAnon, a sprawling conspiracy movement united against a nonexistent cabal of devil-worshipping pedophiles. Flynn was convicted of lying to the FBI, but he was pardoned by President Donald Trump and has become a QAnon evangelist. Powell has been instrumental in promoting false claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged, leading Dominion Voting Systems to file a defamation suit against her earlier today. Watkins formerly helped run 8kun (formerly 8chan), the anonymous message board where QAnon head Q posts cryptic messages to followers. Researchers speculate Q may be multiple people, and both Ron and his father Jim Watkins have been named as potential Q authors.

Twitter is late in taking action against the group. Facebook banned QAnon content in 2020, calling the group a “militarized social movement.” TikTok likewise banned QAnon content for violating its disinformation policy. Until recently, however, Twitter hosted some of QAnon’s most high-profile figures. That included the names above, as well as David Hayes (known as “Praying Medic”), a major QAnon theory interpreter and part of a group that sued YouTube for its own QAnon crackdown last fall.

QAnon supporters were among the Trump backers who mobbed the US Capitol earlier this week, attempting to overturn the results of the US presidential election. Trump himself has also expressed support for QAnon, calling its supporters “people that love our country.”

England touch down in Sri Lanka amid tight Covid-19 security

England’s cricketers touch down in Sri Lanka to be greeted by officials in hazmat suits spraying their clothes and bags with disinfectant, as Joe Root’s squad begin 10 days of Covid quarantine before two-Test series

  • England’s cricket team have arrived in Sri Lanka for their two-Test series
  • Players and coaches were greeted at the airport by officials in hazmat suits
  • Clothing and bags were sprayed with disinfection amid Covid-19 worries
  • The entire series will be played out in a bio-secure bubble this month
  • The England team now begin 10 days of quarantine before the first Test in Galle

England’s cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday – and were immediately reminded this would be no ordinary tour.

A 23-man playing group, comprising of 16 squad members and seven reserves, and coaching staff flew in to Mattala Rajapaksa Airport in Hambantota on a chartered flight to be greeted by a small army of officials in full hazmat suits.

The touring party underwent coronavirus tests on arrival and had their clothes and bags sprayed with disinfectant. Wearing masks, they were ushered through the airport and onto a waiting bus.

All players and staff tested negative for Covid-19 before departing from London on Saturday. A chartered flight was required because no commercial flights are currently able to land on the island.

They will now head to their base in Hambantota for 10 days quarantine in individual hotel rooms ahead of the first Test in Galle on January 14. Both Tests in the series will be played in Galle.

On Tuesday, they will undergo another set of tests and if they receive the all-clear the series will proceed as planned.

England captain Joe Root has insisted the show will go on this time even if any of the players suffer illness, having seen England’s last two tours – the original trip to Sri Lanka in March last year and December’s white ball tour to South Africa – ended prematurely by the pandemic.

‘I don’t think a positive test will automatically bring an end to this tour,’ said Root of a trip that again will feature the strictest of protocols and England having to spend the whole month-long trip in a bio-secure bubble.

‘They are decisions that will have to be made by medical staff. It won’t be down to the players even though guys have the option to opt out at any stage if they don’t feel safe.

‘All we have to do is follow the guidelines as best as we possibly can and if we do that we’ll give ourselves the best chance of not being in that situation. We know the protocols if something was to happen.’

There was criticism of England from South Africa when Eoin Morgan’s side aborted their trip before the one-day series after three home players and a number of staff at the hotel which housed both sides tested positive.

But Root defended their actions, calling it a ‘unique’ situation’ and adding. ‘It was more a domino effect there if you like. As a player in that environment it felt as if there was no way out in terms of the virus once it began circulating on our side of the hotel.

‘The anxiety of that building up over a period of time was significant and the guys didn’t feel safe. The decision was taken out of the players hands and that was that.’

Sri Lanka has seen 44,371 cases during the pandemic and 211 deaths, according to official figures.
