Samsung Display to Produce 90Hz OLED Laptop Panels From March

Samsung Display, the display manufacturing arm of Samsung Electronics, has announced that it will begin mass production of the world’s first 90Hz OLED (organic light emitting diode) panel from March this year. The South Korean company claims that this display with 90Hz refresh rate has a “high-speed driving performance on par with that of 120Hz LCD (displays)”. Till now, scores of smartphones have debuted with displays that have 90Hz refresh rate. Several OEMs are expected to launch laptops or notebooks with 90Hz OLED screens later this year.

As per a press release, Samsung Display Chief Executive Officer Joo Sun Choi has said that the company will initially produce very large quantities of 14-inch, 90Hz OLED displays for laptops and notebooks. Currently, most laptops offer displays that have 60Hz refresh rate. “OLED display panels can best satisfy the diverse consumer needs for laptops used in telework, online education, video streaming, and gaming,” the company said in a statement.

Samsung Display says that it believes consumers will quickly want to shift to OLED displays offering a 90Hz refresh rate because these displays will offer smoother-looking visuals. This happens because they will render static images 90 times a second. Therefore, OLED screens with high refresh rates allow for a more vibrant gaming and movie watching experience.

However, Samsung Display says that consumers will need to have a high-specification graphics card installed to power the display with refresh rate. It also claims that their OLED panels with 90Hz refresh rate offer 10 times faster screen response time as compared to the ones in the market. “In fact, the 90Hz OLED display offers high-speed driving that is actually on par with that of 120Hz LCD screens,” the company said.

Samsung Display is mass-producing 90Hz OLED screens for laptops

Samsung Display has announced plans to mass-produce the world’s first 90Hz OLED screens designed for laptops and says that “several global IT companies” are expected to release models with the new panels this year. Manufacturing will begin in March in “very large quantities,” the company says in a statement attributed to CEO Choi Joo-sun.

The panels are 14-inch in size, though Samsung Display hasn’t given details on specs like aspect ratio or resolution; it’s possible that there will be multiple versions available. Samsung does cite the faster response time of its OLED panels, claiming “practically” the same amount of blurring as a 120Hz LCD when displaying fast-moving content. No potential laptop OEM partners were named in the statement.

OLED displays aren’t unheard of in laptops, but they’re not at all commonplace. While quite a few gaming laptops offer them as an option, the tradeoff there is that you’ve had to give up on high refresh rates. And despite Samsung itself launching an OLED-equipped Galaxy Chromebook last year, the 2021 followup uses a cheaper QLED-branded LCD display instead.

Samsung is the world’s biggest vendor of OLED display panels, so the announcement today suggests that OLED laptops are likely to become much more of a common sight this year.

Samsung Display promises thinner laptop bezels with unproven under-screen webcams

Samsung Display has released a teaser for its under-screen camera technology meant for laptops, dubbed “Samsung Blade Bezel,” on its Weibo page. It promises that its “UPC” (Under Panel Camera) tech can make a laptop’s bezels smaller without having to relocate its webcam, while also making the OLED display itself be both thinner and lighter. There’s no mention of the impact of the technology on the webcam’s image quality, however, which has become increasingly important in the age of social distancing.

We saw the first smartphone with an under-display selfie camera release commercially last year. However, the ZTE Axon 20 5G’s implementation of the feature simply wasn’t very good. The quality of its selfie camera photos was poor, and the portion of the display that covered the camera suffered from much lower resolution than the rest of the screen.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Samsung Display’s under-panel camera plans. Previously, however, attention has focused on its use in smartphones, where manufacturers have obsessed over reducing bezel size in recent years. Back in 2018, Samsung Display mentioned under-display camera technology during a presentation about the future of phone design, and the following year an executive said the technology could be ready for use in smartphones “in the next 1-2 years.”

Now, it seems, the technology is also headed to laptops, where it could allow for smaller bezels without having to relocate the webcam to below the screen. That’s the approach taken by Huawei’s MateBook X Pro which has small screen bezels thanks to a webcam that’s built into its keyboard. Unfortunately, this placement means the webcam is directed at you from a very low angle, when ideally you want it to be positioned at eye-level. The Dell XPS 13 has a small bezel that’s still big enough for a webcam, but the camera’s quality isn’t great.

While the technology could make for better-looking laptops, it’s unlikely to do much for the image quality of built-in webcams themselves which continue to suffer from stubbornly low-quality despite their sudden importance in the age of COVID-19. Ultimately, laptops with better webcams, like the Pixelbook Go or Surface Laptop 3, tend to have larger bezels needed to house beefier imaging components.

Samsung Display provides panels to a variety of different manufacturers. That means we could see Samsung Blade Bezel technology appear in laptops across the industry, rather than being confined to Samsung’s own devices. Today’s teaser doesn’t mention when the first laptop with the technology could release, however.

As for when an under-display camera could appear in Samsung’s smartphones, a recent report from The Elec suggested that it might make its debut in the company’s third-generation Fold.

LG Display announces its smallest OLED TV panel yet

LG Display has provided some details on the OLED panels it’ll be shipping to TV manufacturers this year. The lineup includes a 42-inch panel, the smallest TV-sized OLED yet from LG Display, as well as a new 83-inch panel size that likely features in the Bravia lineup that Sony unveiled a few days ago.

That means that OLED TVs this year will be available in sizes of 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, and 88 inches. LG Display says it’s also shipping a “next-generation” 77-inch panel that’s said to be around 20 percent more efficient and therefore capable of higher brightness than before, which has been a relative disadvantage of OLED TVs to date.

LG Display is a components manufacturer and doesn’t release consumer products itself, so it’s unclear who’s actually going to put a 42-inch TV on sale this year. The larger LG Electronics company is yet to fully unveil its 2021 range of OLED TVs, but according to a report in Yonhap, it’ll be using “OLED evo” branding for the new panels in its 2021 “G1” series.

LG Display has already made news at this year’s virtual CES, announcing a “Smart Bed” concept with a transparent OLED panel that rises out of the foot, along with a 48-inch flexible panel that can shift from a flatscreen TV into a curved gaming monitor.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 Goes Official With a QLED Display

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 has been unveiled for CES 2021 as the successor to last year’s Galaxy Chromebook. The new model has a QLED display that comes as a noteworthy upgrade over the AMOLED screen available on the predecessor. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 also comes with thinner bezels. Samsung has retained the 2-in-1 form factor and offered support for Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) pen on the new Chromebook. Further, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 comes in two distinct colour options to choose from and have Intel Celeron and 10th-generation Intel Core i3 variants, and it has also dropped the price significantly.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 price

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 price starts at $549.99 (roughly Rs. 40,300), as reported by The Verge. The pricing is significantly lower than the Galaxy Chromebook that debuted at $999.99 (roughly Rs. 73,300). The Galaxy Chromebook 2 comes in Fiesta Red and Mercury Gray colour options.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 specifications

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 features a 13.3-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) QLED display with touch support. It is powered by either Intel Celeron 5205U or 10th-generation Intel Core i3-10110U processor, paired with Intel UHD Graphics and up to 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The Chromebook comes in 64GB and 128GB storage options — along with expansion support via microSD card.

Samsung has provided 5W stereo speakers along with Smart AMP sound that is touted to produce audio output up to 178 percent louder than an average amplifier. There is also support for a stylus that can have up to 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 features an HD (720p) webcam. There is also a backlit, lattice keyboard. Further, the Chromebook includes a 45.5WHr battery.

Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 include two USB Type-C ports, a headphone/ microphone combo jack, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth v5.0. It runs on Google’s Chrome OS with Google Play store access.

The Chromebook measures 304.9×203.2×13.9mm and weighs 1.23 kilograms. This isn’t that sleek or lightweight when comparing with the first-generation Galaxy Chromebook that had 9.9mm of thickness and 1.04 kilograms of weight. But nonetheless, the cheaper price and the presence of QLED display makes the new model equally compelling.

Lenovo’s new Yoga all-in-one has a rotating display for better TikTok videos and Twitter scrolling

Lenovo has a new Yoga computer out, but it’s not a laptop — it’s the new Yoga AIO 7 desktop. But while it may look like a standard all-in-one desktop, like its more portable cousins, the Yoga AIO 7 does have a display trick up its sleeve: the entire screen can rotate around, transforming the 27-inch landscape monitor into a vertical form factor.

Of course, the ability to rotate a display isn’t a wholly new idea. Standalone desktop monitors have offered the feature for years, making it easier for users to display content that’s better suited to a taller panel like Twitter feeds, long documents, or TikTok videos. But it’s far rarer to see the concept on an all-in-one computer.

The Yoga AIO 7 in its standard mode.
Image: Lenovo

The idea is reminiscent of Samsung’s Sero TV from last year, a similarly rotating product that scaled up the idea to a full-sized 43-inch television in response to the popularity of vertical video formats from apps like Instagram and TikTok (which, in turn is directly due to the ubiquity of smartphones with video cameras). Lenovo seems aware of the potential for a vertical TV, promising a future software update that will effectively let the AIO 7 double as a full-fledged 4K smart TV.

As for the specs, the Yoga AIO 7 offers a choice between two 27-inch 4K panels (one regular and one that meets Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 color standards); a choice between AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800H and Ryzen 5 4500H CPUs; Nvidia’s integrated RTX 2060 GPU; either 16GB or 32GB of RAM; and a mix of PCIe and HDD storage options (topping out at a 1TB SSD and a 2TB hard drive, respectively).

Of particular note is how Lenovo is taking advantage of USB-C with the Yoga AIO 7. Plug in your laptop with a USB-C cable, and you’ll be able to use the Yoga AIO 7’s hardware — including the display, speakers, mouse and keyboard, power supply, and even the integrated hard drive — directly with your laptop.

The Yoga AIO 7 is already available in China (where its called the Yoga 27), but it’ll be out in “select markets” in February starting at $1,599.
