Dean Henderson was quick to react to his “dream” Manchester United debut after the goalkeeper’s late save helped the Red Devils into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
With United leading 1-0 at Luton through Juan Mata’s penalty, Henderson was required to make a fine late save from Hatters and Wales defender Tom Lockyer to keep his side ahead, with Lockyer’s rebound then cleared off the line by Eric Bailly.
United substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood then emerged from the bench to take the score to 3-0 in the closing stages, with the scoreline flattering the visitors somewhat.
Henderson was delighted with the win though, and tweeted after the match: “I dreamt about this my whole life!! Unbelievable feeling to make my debut for the club I love!! Clean sheet and a win to top it off!!!”
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Henderson after the match, although also made a seemingly pointed reference to current No.1 David De Gea.
“Well, going through is the big thing,” said Solskjaer.
“There are some positives, the keeper does his job, we scored some nice goals towards the end, apart from that it was a good workout.
“That is probably the job our keepers sometimes have to do, you have to make saves when needed and David [de Gea] has done that for years and Dean did that today.”
Manchester United are looking to plot their path back to the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already brought in Donny van de Beek but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

Goalscorer Mata also referenced the save, adding: “It was very important because it was 1-0.
“He did a great save and somebody also cleared the ball on the line.
“I think we did OK. We have all not been training together for too long and now it is important to get the rhythm back and to get confidence. The confidence comes with results.”
