Premier League team of the week as Liverpool trio join Spurs strike pair
[ad_1]
For the first time this season, all 20 teams were in action over the course of the weekend – and goals galore followed.
Everton and West Brom kicked us off with a magnificent seven in Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff, the Toffees running out 5-2 winners, before Leeds and Fulham played out their own seven goal thriller, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men winning 4-3.
Manchester United’s season opener wasn’t what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been hoping for, as they were downed 3-1 by Crystal Palace, while Arsenal made it two wins from two with a 2-1 win over West Ham.
Sunday started with seven goals too, as Spurs ran riot in the second half at Southampton, before Brighton eased past Newcastle in the north east with a 3-0 victory.
Champions Liverpool won 2-0 at Chelsea thanks to a Sadio Mane double, before Leicester and Burnley put on a six-goal showing at the King Power affair.
On Monday night, Aston Villa began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United, before Manchester City began their own title bid, winning 3-1 at Wolves.
But who were the top performers on the second weekend of the season? In a 4-2-4 formation where the only message is “attack, attack, attack,” it’s the Mirror Football team of the week…
Alisson (Liverpool)
Last week Jamie Carragher compared him to Simon Mignolet. Baffling. This weekend, was back to something like his best at Chelsea. Wasn’t overworked, but did everything he needed to do well, and made a fine penalty stop to deny Jorginho.
Timothy Castagne (Leicester City)
Starting Premier League life where he left off in Serie A at Atalanta, the Belgian works his socks off down the right and showed against Burnley that he’s a major threat from fullback.
Ben White (Brighton)
It’s easy to see why Leeds United were so desperate to sign him, and why Brighton just didn’t want to let him go. White mixed smart, physical defending with good use of the ball in the Seagulls win at Newcastle.
Fabinho (Liverpool)
Starting at centre-back, the Brazilian was outstanding for the champions at Stamford Bridge. Used the ball diligently and was rock solid throughout, giving Timo Werner no joy whatsoever.
Tyreek Mitchell (Crystal Palace)
An excellent showing at left-back from the youngster, who is going from strength to strength. Locked up Dan James in the first half while also playing a part in the Eagles opener.
Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City)
The Belgian was head and shoulders above everyone else on the field as City won 3-1 at Wolves on Monday night. Picked up where he left off last season.
Mateusz Klich (Leeds United)
The Polish international produced an all-action display in Leeds’ 4-3 thriller against Fulham. Klich, 30, scored one and produced a sublime assist for Patrick Bamford.
Son Heung-min (Tottenham)
An absolute joke how clean his finishing was at St Mary’s, as he helped himself to four goals. His movement off the ball too was fantastic, Southampton couldn’t get a grip of him.
Harry Kane (Tottenham)
One goal, four assists, it was a real tour de force of centre-forward play from Kane. His vision and technique to both see and execute some difficult passes to play Son in behind was terrific.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
The England striker has been working hard with Duncan Ferguson to sand down the rough edges in his game and it’s starting to work out for him. Carlo Ancelotti wants him in the six yard box more and believe there’s no reason he can’t hit 20-plus goals this term. Four goals already is a perfect start.

Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
The Senegalese star saw Mo Salah take the acclaim for an opening day hat-trick against Leeds and promptly produced a match winning display of his own at Stamford Bridge. Two goals, a key role in Andreas Christensen’s red card, and a display full of skill and tenacity.
