Richard Keys cashing in on infamous ‘smash it’ remark that cost Sky Sports job

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys is using a remark which cost him his job with the broadcasters in 2011 to sell personalised videos online.

The 63-year-old, who now works for BeIN Sports, presented coverage of Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage for nearly 20 years.

But he quit following huge pressure after he was picked up on cameras asking pundit Jamie Redknapp “Did you smash it?” with reference to his ex-girlfriend.

But despite apologising for the comments at the time, he is now appearing to attempt to make money from the incident by selling personalised greetings on the video-sharing website Cameo.

His blog on the site states: “Richard Keys, sports presenter. Let’s ‘smash it’ together and have a bit of banter.”

As well as the comment to Redknapp, Keys and his co-presenter Andy Gray were heard making derogatory comments about female assistant referee Sian Massey.

After he left the role Keys said sorry in an interview on talkSPORT, but insisted he meant no harm by the comments.

“Our prehistoric banter is not acceptable in a modern world and I accept that,” he said. “We got it wrong. We failed to change while everything was changing about us.

Keys is now cashing in on the comments

“I made it an official apology which Sian accepted.  She and I enjoyed some banter together. We left on very good terms.

“I can’t tell you any more about the conversation beyond saying she was in good spirits and I expressed my disappointment that Andy and I in misguidedly having a little fun, had got it wrong.

“There is no excuse anywhere for anybody to make a judgement on someone else’s ability to do a job because they are male or female. It was wrong.”
