17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas to be held at Indore in January 2023

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated once in every two years to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government of India and reconnect them with their roots. During the Convention, selected overseas Indians are also honored with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to recognize their contributions to various fields both in India and abroad.

The 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention will be held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in January next year. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar on Thursday launched the website of 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan through video conferencing.

Dr. Jaishankar said, the Narendra Modi Government has always accorded the highest priority to the Indian Diaspora which is more than 32 million. He said, Government’s engagement is founded on the 4Cs- Care, Connect, Celebrate and Contribute. The External Affairs Minister expressed confidence that the 17th PBD Convention will be an important landmark event in the post-pandemic world. He said, coming January 2023, look forward to Madhya Pradesh’s warm hospitality.

Secretary in Consular, Passport, Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs Division of Ministry of External Affairs Ausaf Sayeed was also present on the occasion.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year on 9th January to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India. It also commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India on 9th January 1915.

Nominations for Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards – 2023

Nominations are invited for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA) to be conferred during the next edition of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) to be held in 2023.

PBD is held every two years to strengthen the engagement of overseas Indian community with India and reconnect them with their roots. During the convention, PBSA is conferred by the President of India on selected overseas Indians (Non-Resident Indian, Person of Indian Origin or an organization or institution established and run by the Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin), who have made significant contribution in any one of the following fields:

For Achievements Abroad

  1. Better understanding abroad of India;
  2. Support to India’s causes and concerns in a tangible way;
  3. Building closer links between India, the overseas Indian community and their country of residence;
  4. Social and humanitarian causes in India or abroad;
  5. Welfare of the local Indian community;
  6. Philanthropic and charitable work;
  7. Eminence in one’s field or outstanding work, which has enhanced India’s prestige in the country of residence; or
  8. Eminence in skills which has enhanced India’s prestige in that country (for non-professional workers).

For Achievements within India

  1. Philanthropic investments and charitable work in India;
  2. For contribution made towards India’s development.

Self-nomination has also been allowed for PBSA-2023. The nominations should be sent in both soft copy to [email protected] and original to the Embassy of India by April 30, 2022. The nomination should include a cover letter stating the achievements abroad or in India listed above that justify nomination, nomination form 2023 and summary of PBSA nominee.
