Nine nuns died of coronavirus in a New York convent | The State
Nine nuns at an upstate New York convent died from COVID-19-related causes in just over a month.
The nuns lived in the “Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet” convent in Latham, reported Albany Times Union.
Four of the deaths associated with the congregation had previously been reported by hospitals earlier this month. The other five were not reported by the facility to the Albany County Health Department, ”Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen said.
The convent is home to approximately 140 nuns. On December 11, the congregation reported that 22 religious sisters had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a memorandum obtained NBC News.
A similar situation was reported in December at a Wisconsin convent, where eight elderly nuns died of complications from COVID-19 in the same week; four of them the same day.
Yesterday the US crossed the barrier of 20 million infections in the pandemic, which represents 24% of cases worldwide. So far it is the country with the most deaths: 357,235; most in New York (38,242).
