21 reasons to be cheerful in 2021 from Adele to James Bond to Glastonbury
Thankfully, 2020 is no more, so as we welcome 2021, let’s get the new roaring twenties started with the optimism we’ll need to see us through the next few months, by looking forward to the 21 fun things we have to look forward to… well fingers crossed.
1. She threatened a drum and bass album, and after last year, even that might be welcome for some much needed fun. A new Adele album comes in 2021 – and after her marriage split, it’s set to be ballad heavy.
2. Daniel Craig finally gets to say goodbye to James Bond, five years after he first quit the franchise, when No Time To Die gets released in April. Who will be the next 007?
3. Mother of God! Despite lockdown delaying filming, there’s a new series of Line of Duty!
4. Glastonbury 2021… possibly? It might be postponed to September instead of June, it might even be postponed again until next year. But eventually, they will book the likes of Macca, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, and we will come.
5. Duran Duran and Pearl Jam are set to headline the British Summer Time gigs in Hyde Park in July, all things permitting…
6. And Duran Duran will also be heading to the Isle of Wight Festival, alongside Lionel Richie and Lewis Capaldi in June. Hooray!
7. To be honest, even a village fete will be welcome this summer. Any big fun outdoor event will do. Let’s hope the weather is as glorious as last year.
8. The Big Breakfast returns! Channel 4 will air a one-off special hosted by comic Mo Gilligan for the broadcaster’s Black Takeover Day.
9. The much-mooted Friends reunion is finally set to happen this year to belatedly mark their 25th anniversary. They’ve been on a break for 17 years.
10. Will Ed Sheeran return? He took a year off while wife Cherry welcomed their daughter Lyra Antarctica in September, and returned with a surprise one-off single in December. More could follow.
11. When theatres hopefully reopen, and all we have to worry about is the noisy eating debate that raged in happier times, Whoopi Goldberg stars in the West End’s Sister Act: The Musical.
12. Frozen: The Musical, should arrive in April starring Samantha Barks – where the audiences’ singing will drown out any controversial chomping.
13. And Pretty Woman: The Musical should finally get its run in the West End, too, after an ill-fated opening in March last year.
14. One Direction to reform? Bookies Ladbrokes have them odds on to do so.
15. Meanwhile, Coral have Oasis at 2/1 for a reunion. It might take more than a pandemic for either…
16. Mission Impossible 7. Worth watching if just to see if everyone was socially distancing, and work out why Tom Cruise was caught shouting on set.
17. Actual gigs will be back on from April… again, hopefully! Genesis are set to tour, after Phil Collins turns 70 in January, and Little Mix hit the road without departed bandmate Jesy Nelson.
18. If she doesn’t get you no evil thing will: Emma Stone plays Cruella de Vil in a big screen adaptation in May.
19. And you and your wingman might finally be allowed in the cinema together by July for Top Gun.
20. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are due to take place this summer…
21…as is last year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. It should be a summer to remember – for all the right reasons.
