The president affirms that infections are going down and that there are no signs of outbreaks
MEXICO – While the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo Lopez-Gatell warned that an outbreak of coronavirus infections could occur in October, the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador He assured that the COVID-19 pandemic “is going down” in the country.
He even stated that so far they have not registered Coronavirus “outbreaks”.
“This terrible pandemic is going down and fortunately there are no outbreaks. We are going out, ”said López Obrador during his usual press conference from the National Palace.
The president stressed that “it is good news in the context of the seriousness of the problem” the fact that there is “a slow decrease” in infections and that so far there are no “signs of outbreaks.”
In this sense, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, in charge of the strategy against the coronavirus pandemic, spoke of an “encouraging prospect”, since Mexico accumulates seven consecutive weeks of “sustained decline” of contagions.
He explained that the point of maximum expansion of the disease was reached during the last week of July and that since then it has gone down, so that 27 of the 32 states accumulate a “weekly reduction in the number of cases.”
In any case, he called for maintaining social distancing measures during the slow economic reopening that began in June in order to “avoid the rebound phenomenon” that, he said, “most Western European countries” are experiencing, and the that Mexico is not exempt.
And it is that López-Gatell has repeatedly mentioned that it is estimated that a regrowth will be registered in October, which will occur at the time of influenza infections that begin to occur in the same month.
“This can happen at any time in a municipality, state, in the country, or even worldwide,” he highlighted in one of his conferences on the coronavirus in Mexico.
Since the arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus to the country at the end of February, the Government’s strategy has been controversial, since Mexico is the OECD country that performs the fewest diagnostic tests on the population.
This has led health authorities to underreport the cases and confirmed deaths in Mexico, the fourth country in the world with the most deaths during the pandemic, behind the United States, Brazil and India.
However, López-Gatell defends the strength of the Mexican hospital system, since today only 24% of beds with assisted ventilation are occupied.
Mexico reports 73,697 deaths from coronavirus and 700,580 infections.
