Man Utd legend Andy Cole backs front-three to deliver without Jadon Sancho

Andy Cole reckons Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can bring Manchester United back to their free-scoring glory days – even without Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils found a new lease of life after lockdown as they scored 22 goals in their final nine Premier League games to reach the top four last season.

A big-money move for England international Sancho looks increasingly unlikely with the club unable to agree a fee with Borussia Dortmund.

But Cole believes former team-mate Solskjaer has already instilled a system which gives them an opportunity to close the gap on rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

And the former Golden Boot winner reckons Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are ready to cope with the responsibility of delivering the goods.

Man Utd’s attacking trio ended last season in red-hot form

Cole, speaking to the Mirror following his involvement in BGC Charity Day 2020, raising millions for charity including Oasis Charitable Trust, said: “Ole’s got Man United playing the way Man United should be playing – attacking football.

“Some of the signings Ole’s made have made Manchester United better, more creative.

“I think he’s got them playing with a freedom now that they should be playing with and that’s what everyone wanted to see.

“I think they (the front three) are all good enough to hold that responsibility of scoring goals. They played very well last season, all contributing and creating chances.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already brought in Donny van de Beek but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

However, they have so far failed to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund and are considering Gareth Bale as an alternative.

“If they can carry that form into this season, continue doing the right things then I’d like to think Manchester United can kick-on from last season.”

After landing goalscoring midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax for £40million, all eyes are now on whether any more new faces will arrive at Old Trafford before the October 5 deadline.

“Manchester United are a team that look to add players in every season,” Cole says.

Eyes are now on Jadon Sancho and if Man Utd can make a move happen

“We keep talking about a centre-back, but United have so many centre-backs at the moment I’m not sure how many more than can actually buy.

“Especially nowadays, centre-backs seem to be more expensive than centre-forwards so it’s a challenge to strengthen any more there. It’ll be interesting to see what they do there.

“Jadon Sancho, if that deal comes off, it would be a coup, but if that deal doesn’t come off then I’ve got no doubts they’ll have their eye on whoever else they feel could make their team stronger.”

BGC Charity Day is an annual fundraising event in commemoration of the 658 colleagues and the 61 Eurobrokers employees lost on 9/11, and has raised over $170 million for over 100+ charities and good causes around the world.
