Premier League 2020/21 kit rankings: Rating and slating new season’s away shirts

[ad_1]

We’ve seen the home kits, now bring on the aways.

The 2020/21 Premier League season will get under way this weekend, and with it brings a whole range of different change strips that range from good to bad to a bit weird to downright horrendous.

Really, really horrendous.

So, when we’re faced with a load of new kits we’re going to do what we do best, and rank them.

Read on for the definitive list of of the top 20 – well, 19 – Premier League away kits for the coming season.

Don’t agree with our No.1? Feel free to tell us in the comments.

Nicely.

Don’t worry it’s not blood

On with the rankings.

20. Wolverhampton Wanderers

Oh dear god

I mean… where do you even start with this?

It’s…

How…

What…

The thing with it is that you could almost make an excuse for the spilled blue paint look if it was a colour that anything to do with the rest of the kit, or indeed Wolves.

But this?

Bottom of the pile by a long way.

19. Burnley

They’re keeping us waiting

That’s right.

Burnley’s isn’t even out yet and it’s already better than that Wolves effort.

18. Arsenal

Reminds you a bit of Silent Witness doesn’t it?

There’s been a murrrrrda.

The front of the Arsenal away kit is apparently inspired by the marble halls of Highbury, not that series Dexter about a serial killing forensic specialist which was massive for a while.

You wouldn’t know it though.

17. Liverpool

Do not adjust your sets… unless you’re changing the channel

Is this one for the kids? Do the kids like it?

Nike’s teal number has apparently been flying off the shelves, but for the life of me I’m not really sure why.

16. West Bromwich Albion

Again, not ideal

West Brom have a long history with yellow and green change colours so you’ve got to respect that.

They just could have arranged them in a nicer order here.

15. Manchester United

Not in the least bit inspirational

Surely any motivational Ole Gunnar Solskjaer teamtalk on the road is going to instantly be rendered less effective as soon as his players pull on this dreary effort?

It’s already got a European exit in the bag too, such is the power of its dullness.

14. Newcastle United

“Get off the road!”

Missing your daily cycle to the office because you’ve been working from home for six months? Want to get back to that thrill of being shouted at by taxi drivers who think they own the road?

There’s a Premier League away kit for that.

13. Manchester City

Probably also available in jumper form

The thing about this kit is that they’ve clearly put a lot of effort into it, but the end result is just something that is quite spectacularly dull.

An insult to that brilliant Hacienda kit from last season.

12. Crystal Palace

Plenty going on here

Adding a third colour to these kits is a delicate balancing act, and it’s gone a bit wrong here.

Sure, Palace have tried to incorporate both of the stripes of their home kit into the away which is a noble endeavour which points to tradition and flies in the face of things like the Wolves monstrosity above, but… nah.

11. Chelsea

All the Noel Whelan vibes

Mid-90s Coventry City is more of a mood than a look, but Chelsea clearly thought enough of it to try and pull it off here.

Needs a bit more Gordon Strachan.

10. Fulham

My eyes!

Do not adjust your screens, it really is that bright.

Fulham return to the top flight hoping to dazzle people on the road with contrast-changing yellow that might save a few teams turning on their floodlights this winter.

9. West Ham United

Not quite worth a knees up

Another traditional effort from West Ham, where it’s always the 1960, 70s and/or 80s.

But whereas their home kit lends itself pretty well to nostalgia, the change number doesn’t quite pull that off.

8. Aston Villa

Kappa didn’t put poppable buttons on the sides, sadly

The pinstripes make for an altogether more interesting dark kit than the ones seen above, and the detailing around the collar also works too.

All in all a pretty solid effort, right down to the little car in the A of the sponsor.

Hadn’t spotted that had you?

7. Sheffield United

No, someone didn’t leave a red sock in the wash

Pink kits continue to grow in popularity and show that Palermo might have been onto something for all those years after all.

It’s a decent offering compared to last season’s rather standard efforts from the Blades, and maybe a sign that they’re comfortable rubbing shoulders with the big boys.

6. Tottenham Hotspur

We can’t be completely certain that this wasn’t a goalkeeper’s kit before

Dark green kits can often be difficult to pull off – there’s a reason Plymouth Argyle aren’t very good after all – but Spurs have done that here.

It’s not as nice as the home one but that‘s a high bar.

5. Leeds United

Whatever happened to Thistle Hotels?

Ah, the 1990s. A simpler time, and a better time for Leeds United.

But now they are back in a big way, and this number reminds us all of Tony Yeboah in his heyday, which is never a bad thing.

4. Southampton

And now, we don’t know who the sponsors are

The white sash across the red home kit is reversed on the Saints third strip, meaning that something different was needed for the away.

They came up with this navy number and you know what? They nailed it.

3. Leicester City

Clean

On first glance this looks just like any other white kit, but then you look a bit closer and start admiring the details.

The blue and gold stripes down the sides are different and very good, and the pattern on the front looks impressive too.

Decent.

2. Everton

Strong Scandinavian vibes from this Euro 2008 qualifier of an Everton away kit from Hummel, which is very Swedish but also might be designed to make Colombia’s finest James Rodriguez feel at home.

In a campaign of confusion across many clubs this is an away kit which stands out for its clarity and the fact that it is doing exactly what you want it of it.

Which is quite un-Everton, when you think about it.

1. Brighton and Hove Albion

Brazil comes to Brighton

But Everton are pipped to the crown by Brighton’s Brazil-like change kit, which will be lighting up many an away ground this season.

Maybe the collar could have been better, but everything else is almost exactly what you want from the Samba Seagulls in this Nike number.

Now we’ve just got to hope they sign Neymar.
