The Brazilian centre-half is closing in on a move to the Emirates having impressed at Lille last term.

But the finer elements of the deal are not yet complete meaning Gabriel watched Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the winning penalty in a 5-4 shootout win to deliver a second domestic trophy in a month.

David Luiz, who started and also scored from the spot, posted on his Instagram following the success.

And Gabriel comment on a video of the Brazilian’s penalty by saying: “I was nervous, brother”.

The 22-year-old has attracted plenty of attention from around Europe and his signing, should it go through, is a major coup for the Gunners.

Martin Keown, who played in a title winning Arsenal side, couldn’t speak highly enough of the defender who he believes has go all the attributes to succeed.

“I sincerely hope so he signs as he’s really strong, quick, left-footed player,” he told BT Sport.

“I saw him play against Chelsea for Lille last season, I went out to watch him.

“Magnificent player, I think he’s the future. He sees danger and he’s a leader. He’s strong, powerful, I sincerely hope this transfer does go through and he becomes an Arsenal player.

“That will really secure them at the back whether it’s going to be a four or a three I think this lad can play in either system.”

Mikel Arteta will also have the benefit of William Saliba who arrived from Saint Etienne having been signed last summer.

Defence was a major problem for Arsenal last term but recent additions should help address the problem.
