Chapter based on Tipu Sultan removed from seventh grade textbook in Karnataka
The revised syllabus has been uploaded on the website of Karnataka Textbook Society (KTBS). It has been revealed that Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, chapter five about the historical sites of Mysore and commissioner administration have been removed from the social science textbook of class VII.
Bengaluru: The chapter on the 18th century controversial ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, has been removed from the social science textbook of class VII. This step was taken after the decision of the Government of Karnataka to reduce the syllabus of 2020-21 due to Kovid-19 epidemic. However, official sources said that chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the books of classes VI and X.

The Department of Public Instruction has decided to reduce the syllabus for 2020-21 in view of the epidemic. On a question related to the removal of the chapter, the officials said that it should be noted that students study about Tipu in Class VI and X as well.

A few months ago, the government set up an expert committee to look into it after the demand of some BJP leaders to remove a chapter in the textbook commemorating Tipu Sultan.
However, the committee had said that the ruler cannot be ignored in the school curriculum. On the developments, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivkumar said that the BJP government is taking such a decision keeping in mind the political agenda.
He said, “You cannot change history. We will not accept it. The Congress will take this issue seriously and will form a committee to look into it. ”
