Delhi violence live updates: Policeman killed in Maujpur CAA clashes, petrol pump torched, Section 144 imposed

Head Constable Ratan Lal, posted in ACP Gokalpuri office in Delhi, died on Monday during clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Maujpur, Delhi. Section 144 has been imposed in the North East area of Delhi.

Delhi Police head constable was killed during the clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Maujpur in Delhi on Monday. Head Constable Ratan Lal was posted in the ACP Gokalpuri office in Delhi. The clashes broke out between pro and anti-CAA demonstrations in Gokalpuri on Monday when the two sides pelted stones at each other. Tension escalated in Jaffrabad and Maujpur areas after protesters torched at least two houses and a fire tender during the clashes between pro and anti-CAA groups.

Pro- and anti-citizenship protesters also clashed on Sunday after BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who has a history of making communal comments, held a pro-CAA rally in the area

Head Constable Ratan Lal was deployed in the Maujpur area where clashes had broken out on Monday. He had sustained grave injuries during the stone-pelting in the area during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest. Ratan Lal was trying to pacify the protesters when he was hit by stones on his head. The head constable was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.

6:19 pm: BREAKING: 37 police personnel injured in violence in North East Delhi.

6:15 pm: DCP Shahdara, who fell unconscious during a CAA demonstration in Maujpur where clashes are going on, is now stable, sources have told India Today TV. An attempt to set ablaze a petrol pump has been reported. One rider was seen carrying a country-made weapon and the police are trying to track him down. It is a matter of investigation how 1000 people gathered in Maujpur so soon, sources have told India Today TV.

6:01 pm: ENTIRE VIOLENCE APPEARS TO BE ORCHESTRATED: MHA SOURCES

The home affairs ministry has told the India Today TV that the CP is in the control room. “Delhi Police is constantly in touch with the MHA. This entire violence appears to be orchestrated with an eye on Donald Trump’s visit to Delhi on Tuesday. MHA is monitoring the situation,” MHA sources told India Today TV.

5:57 pm: Protesters enter the residence of AAP’s Nehru Vihar corporator Mohd. Tahir Hussain and damaged the property. Tahir Hussain was inside his residence with his family when the incident happened, India Today TV reporter Sushant reports.

5:52 pm: About 80 per cent shops have been vandalised in Maujpur area where violence has broken out.

5:46 pm: No sight of police personnel in Maujpur, Ghonda, Chand Bagh areas where clashes have broken out.

5:41 pm: Some demonstrators barged into some shops in Maujpur main market and damaged the properties.

While Section 144 has been imposed in North East Delhi clashes broke out between pro and anti-CAA protesters in Maujpur, protesters from both the sides are still out in the streets. The police are trying to pacify the protesters, reports Arvind Ojha.

“Some incidents of violence and arson have been reported in the areas of North East District, particularly in the areas of Maujpur, Kardampuri, Chand Bagh and Dayalpur. It is appealed to the people of Delhi and particularly to the North East District to maintain peace and harmony and not to believe in any false rumours. It is also appealed to the media not to circulate any disturbing pictures which may further aggravate the situation. Delhi Police is making every effort to restore normalcy.
