Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra launched: Price, specs and features

Samsung has launched the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. It brings three devices, with slightly differing specs, but a similar-looking feature set.

After weeks of leaks and rumours, Samsung has finally launched its Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. Much like last year, the new flagship series brings with it three smartphones — Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra.

The new flagships were launched at an event in San Francisco, California, where the company announced the phones as part of its premium end offerings for the year. For now, the availability of the S20 series in India, or its pricing for the country hasn’t been announced yet.

However, the company has revealed that the phone will be made available to buyers in the US from March 6 and will be available at a starting price of $999 for the Galaxy S20. The three phones will also be 5G ready for all the markets that currently support the network.

Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra: Specifications

Display: The three phones sport displays with similar specs, but different sizes. The S20 comes with a 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O Display. The S20+ gets a 6.7-inch Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O Display.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra gets the biggest display of the three, as it sports a 6.9-inch Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O Display. All three panels support 120hz refresh rate and are HDR10+ certified.

Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in the US, and Exynos 990 in markets outside the country — possibly even India.

RAM: 5G variant of the S20 and S20+ will sport 12GB of RAM. However, 4G LTE variants of the devices will get 8GB of RAM. The S20 Ultra will get 16GB of RAM on its top-end variant, while the entry ones will get 12GB of RAM.

Storage: The Galaxy S20 will come with a maximum 128GB storage, while the Galaxy S20+ and Ultra will be available in three storage configurations — 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Rear cameras: Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+ support hybrid optical zoom of up to 3X and total zoom of 30X. The two phones also share the main cameras in the setup, which include a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens. However, on the S20+ there’s also a ToF camera.

The S20 Ultra on the other hand also gets a quad-camera set-up, but with completely different lenses. The first lens is an ultra-wide 12-megapixel lens sat next to the primary 108-megapixel wide-angle lens. For 100x Space Zoom there’s a 48-megapixel lens. Completing the set-up is a ToF lens.

Front cameras: For selfies, the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ get 10-megapixel lenses, while the S20 Ultra gets a massive 40-megapixel lens.

Battery: The smallest battery pack is fitted on the Galaxy S20 which gets a 4000mAh unit with 25W charging support. The Galaxy S20+ gets a 4500mAh pack while the S20 Ultra gets a 5000mAh one, both with support for up to 45W fast charging.

Operating System: All three come with Android 10-based One UI 2 out-of-the-box.

Of the three phones, the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+ are the direct successors to the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+. The Galaxy S20 Ultra, however, appears to be a special edition device with a focus on cameras. It uses an extremely high-resolution 108-megapixel image sensor and offers up to 100X zoom using optical and digital zoom technology.

Of the three phones, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has the biggest screen at 6.9 inches as well as a maximum amount of RAM, which is 16GB. The Galaxy S20 and S20+ too offer a lot in terms of features, with all three phones supporting fast refresh rate up to 120Hz.

The three phones are also 5G ready for the markets that have the networks ready. However, they will also be available in an LTE model for the ones where the network band is not available.

For now, Samsung has only announced the availability of the devices in the US, where the phones will be made available to buyers starting March 6. The pricing in the country will begin at $999 for the Galaxy S20, and go up to $1399 for the S20 Ultra, with the Galaxy S20+ snug right in between at $1,199.

However, it is to be noted that these are prices for the 5G variants of the device. The LTE ones could be more affordable in countries like ours as the RAM allocation on the S20 and S20+ are also lower on these models.
