New Delhi: There is a debate in the country about the National Register of Citizens (NRC). There is a fear in the minority community that the Central Government has amended the Citizenship Act (CAA) only to implement the NRC. The National Population Register (NPR) is also being linked to this. Protests are taking place across the country against the CAA. The Kerala and Punjab governments have also passed resolutions in the assembly against this law. The governments of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan have also spoken of not implementing it in their state. Famous writer Chetan Bhagat spoke openly on the issue of NRC in a conversation with NDTV. He said that because of NRC there is an atmosphere of fear among minorities. He also spoke about polarizing and doing identity-based politics on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Chetan Bhagat said, ‘I am not saying that fear about NRC is rational, this fear is real. BJP has always tried to polarize, this is what people think. This government has become a cause for concern, especially in the minority community. This is the identity of the BJP. The NRC may be secular, but it is also a secular oppression for all Indians. We have voter ID card, Aadhar card, passport. How often do people have to prove their identity? When will all this end?
Instructing the Central Government on the problems faced by the NRC, he said, ‘This is a costly and chaotic process. At worst, it can lead to civil war. All types of documents will disappear. People will be very worried If you have documents, then the authorities can dismiss them, then what will you do. Will you go to court again? The government will also face difficulties to deal with the crores of people who will not be in the list of NRC.
He further said, ‘If five percent people are also found to be illegal, what will you do with about 60 million people? You can not send them. You can’t do anything with them. During this time, he did not even describe the theory of NRC as bad. He said, ‘I am not saying that NRC should not be brought forever but it should be brought only when the system is right and it does not harm anyone.’
