Armie Hammer says ‘the vicious and spurious online attacks against me’ are ‘b*******’

Armie Hammer has responded for the first time to disturbing messages allegedly sent by the actor, which were leaked last week.

He said he could not leave his children alone for four months while filming Shotgun Wedding, with Jennifer Lopez. Earlier on Wednesday it was reported that he was pulling out of the film.

The Social Network star told TMZ: ‘I’m not responding to these b******* claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic.’

He added: ‘Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that.’

A Wednesday report from PageSix claimed that the actor was already exiting the project, with production spokesperson saying: ‘Given the imminent start date of ‘Shotgun Wedding,’ Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision.’

Meanwhile another report claimed that Lopez had also been considering dropping Hammer from the film.

Controversy: The news comes after a series of screenshots leaked over the weekend, purporting to show Armie Hammer authoring a series of disturbing messages about rape fantasies, cannibalism, and 'blood-sucking' to a woman over a period of four years (pictured November 2020)

Jennifer Lopez is reportedly set to drop actor Armie Hammer from her upcoming rom-com, Shotgun Wedding, after disturbing messages allegedly sent by the actor were leaked

‘Jennifer is very concerned about the movie now these stories have come out,’ a source has told The Sun.

A source expanded to The Sun: ‘There have been a lot of phone calls and meetings about if they can still make the movie with Armie as the romantic lead.

‘A lot of people have suggested quietly dropping him from the project and I think Jennifer could agree to it,’ the insider added.

‘She’s a producer on the movie – does she want to act with him and pretend to be in love with someone who’s been accused of texting those things?’

JLo, who is reportedly ‘horrified’ by the alleged messages, currently is cast as Hammer’s fiancee in the upcoming rom-com.

On Wednesday DailyMail.com obtained concerning videos showing Hammer looking ‘out of it’, cracking open a beer while driving and licking white crystals off his friend’s hand.

The 34-year-old is seen in two separate clips, declaring ‘s**t’s getting weird’ after polishing off a white substance from a friend’s hand and in another saying ‘sending love, boys’ after taking a swig from his beer can while behind the wheel.

Hammer began to trend on Twitter over the weekend after a series of sexually graphic Instagram DMs that he allegedly penned to a woman were leaked publicly by an anonymous, now-private account, House of Effie.

A source close to the family describes his downward spiral into drugs and depravity.

The source said: ‘He always liked to drink, do drugs, but never like this.’

Hammer’s estranged wife Elizabeth Chambers, whom he split from in July 2020, is said to be currently ‘shocked and sickened’ over the recent revelations.

A close friend exclusively told DailyMail.com: ‘Armie had a whole other side to him that she wasn’t aware of. Whether it was always there and he kept it hidden, or something happened that changed him completely, she doesn’t know.’

Donning a green bandanna around his neck and wearing gold aviator sunglasses, a wide-eyed Hammer dead pans the camera and says: ‘S**t’s getting weird.’

He then shows a friend whose hand is outstretched with a tiny amount of small white crystals.

Hammer is then seen licking the substance out of his friend’s hand, before the man says ‘more, more, more, more’, prompting Hammer to go back and clean off the rest of the man’s hand.

Hammer grimaces, sticks his tongue out and makes disgusted noises, saying: ‘Got it all.’

Hammer’s estranged wife is said to be distraught over the leaked messages, which date back to 2016 and some are as recent as February 2020, a time period where Hammer was still married.

The two announced their 10-year marriage was over in July, as a source close to Chambers admitted she was aware of his infidelities, including being romantically involved with Lily James as DailyMail.com revealed last year, which led to their split.

But Hammer’s alleged extreme kinks are a ‘complete shock’ to the mother-of-two, with the friend adding: ‘Armie appears to be a monster.’

They said: ‘A lot of these women have reached out to Elizabeth and although she didn’t want to admit it to herself at first, she knows now they are speaking the truth.

‘Armie had a whole other side to him that she wasn’t aware of. Whether it was always there and he kept it hidden, or something happened that changed him completely, she doesn’t know.’

The insider claims that one of the women who contacted Chambers about her experience with Hammer was left so traumatized that she entered an ‘intense rehab and therapy program because of his emotional and maybe physical abuse.’

They added: ‘He preyed upon her when she was coming out of a relationship. He made her feel very uncomfortable, the things he wanted to do made her very scared.’

The graphic Instagram DMs that Hammer allegedly penned to a woman included talk of rape fantasies, BDSM and cannibalism. In one message, the actor allegedly writes to the woman: ‘I am 100% a cannibal. I want to eat you.’

Though the messages are unverified, House of Effie attempted to prove their authenticity by sharing private photos alleged to be from Hammer.

One includes an undated photo that seems to be sent from Hammer’s official Instagram account where he grabs his neck, presumably to imitate choking himself.

Another photo is of a male’s hand splayed out across a script on a wooden table, and purports to have been sent from Hammer’s Instagram account in an undated message. Visible on the man’s ring finger is a small tattoo.

Notably, Hammer has a similar looking tattoo on his finger, having previously had Chambers’ initials inked on his ring finger shortly after they married in October 2010.

They also supplied voice messages, where a man purported to be Hammer describes his sexual fantasies and speaks about the messages in question.

House of Effie explained she initially shared a video that referenced her alleged affair with Hammer, prompting other women to come forward and their stories to go viral.

The user wrote: ‘Women approached me with their affair stories as we talked overwhelmed with grief for days and nights without sleeping or eating, with some ending up in the ER.

‘We collectively decided we have to speak out after how we were treated and seeing how the women in 2020 were being treated by him. We cannot allow more women to endure what we are going through in the future.’

The accuser claims the women that Hammer allegedly was having affairs with recently ‘united’ and were able to ‘piece together a five year timeline’ of his alleged activity.

They concluded that ‘when [Hammer] has a fight with his wife, he’d reach out to his kitten, and when they had a fight, the next day he would just reach out to his other kitten with the same message. Naturally all fights revolving around [Hammer’s] bad treatment of women.’

It’s unclear how many women are behind the allegations.

During this time period, Hammer was still married to Chambers. They are parents to two children, daughter Harper, six, and son Ford, three.

The woman has also shared a photo she claims to have received from Hammer during her purported exchange with him, showing a tattoo on his ring finger

Hammer has a similar looking tattoo on his finger, as seen in the above images from 2020 (left) and 2018 (right), which is said to be of the initials of his now ex-wife

In a number of the alleged messages, Hammer appears to reference Chambers.

In an exchange via Facebook in April of 2017, Chambers is brought up again. A woman asks ‘did you fix that problem?’

And when Hammer quizzes: ‘What problem?’, she replies: ‘The f**k-your-wife-so-she-lets-s**t-go problem.’

Hammer answers back: ‘Hahahaha. Not yet. But I bought a b**er pill for tomorrow night just to make sure I seal the deal. They’ve bumped her from first class and we didn’t even sit next to each other.’

Another message from Instagram dated Christmas Day 2019, the accuser claims she told Hammer’s wife about their alleged affair.

Hammer allegedly writes: ‘As long as you f**king promise never to do anything like that again.’

One of Hammer’s exes, writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, has spoken out saying she believes the shocking messages ‘are real’, and later wrote: ‘It takes an army to hide a predator’ in reference to the allegations.

Henriquez tweeted on Monday: ‘If you are still questioning whether or not those Armie Hammer DMs are real (and they are) maybe you should start questioning why we live in a culture willing to give abusers the benefit of the doubt instead of victims.’

Henriquez, who was pictured on a date with Hammer on August 31, later took to Instagram to add: ‘It takes an army to hide a predator. Behind every abuser is a team of people working hard to cover up the trail.’

The writer reportedly blocked Hammer on social media shortly after their August meeting. It’s unclear how long they dated.

Armie Hammer says French erotica writer and philosopher Marquis de Sade is his dream dinner guest

Armie Hammer dropped hints about his reported sexual fetishes in several interviews before he was was accused of sexual depravity and alleged to be a ‘cannibal’.

In a November 2020 Netflix interview for the film Rebecca, starring Lily James, Hammer was asked (in Spanish) ‘What historical person would you like to have dinner with?’

To which Armie responded, ‘Marquis de Sade.’

French philosopher and erotic writer Marquis de Sade

French philosopher and erotic writer Marquis de Sade

Marquis de Sade was a French philosopher and writer known for his erotic work in the 1700s.

De Sade’s work depicted sexual fantasies and empathized violence, suffering and sodomy.

The words ‘sadism’ and ‘sadist’ are derived from de Sade’s work where he portrayed acts of sexual cruelty.

Hammer told Netflix that de Sade would be his dream dinner guest

Henriquez previously posted a meme to Twitter that showed a picture of her with Hammer, bearing the caption ‘How it started’, alongside a screen shot showing Hammer’s blocked account, with the words ‘How it’s going’.  The post was uploaded on October 30.

Another woman Hammer was recently said to be dating, model Paige Lorenze, tweeted Sunday: ‘anyone got a good therapist?’ as the messages were first leaked.

Henriquez responded to the post the following day, telling Lorenze: ‘Yeah girl, I’ll send you the number’, accompanied with a wink-face emoji.

A request for comment sent to Lorenze’s publicist has not yet been returned.

House of Effie also shared a clip from an Interview posted by Netflix in November 2020, where he declares that his dream dinner guest would be Marquis de Sade, a French philosopher and author, whose works helped coin the term ‘sadist’ to describe sexual cruelty.

He was known for his libertine sexuality and his works depicted sexual fantasies, which included a heavy focus on violence, suffering and anal sex.

Hammer, best known for his acclaimed role in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, has appeared in recent years in films including On the Basis of Sex, Sorry to Bother You and the upcoming Death on the Nile.

DailyMail.com has reached out to 20th Century Fox, who are behind Death on the Nile, and ViacombCBS, who are developing The Offer in which Hammer is set to star, for comment on the allegations but has not yet received a response.

In an interview with Playboy magazine in 2013, he lifted the lid on his ‘wild’ sexual habits with women in previous relationships.

He told the outlet: ‘Well, if you’re married to a feminist as I am, then it’s…. I don’t know how much we can put here without my parents being embarrassed, but I used to like to be a dominant lover.

‘I liked the grabbing of the neck and the hair and all that. But then you get married and your sexual appetites change. And I mean that for the better – it’s not like I’m suffering in any way. But you can’t really pull your wife’s hair. It gets to a point where you say, “I respect you too much to do these things that I kind of want to do.”’

Hammer later blamed what he called ‘over-sharing’ about his past sexual exploits on alcohol.

‘Let’s just say hindsight is 20/20. Don’t drink during an interview,’ he told E! News.

However, in an interview with Elle later the same year, he claimed a former girlfriend once tried to stab him in bed.

‘One chick tried to stab me when we were having sex,’ Hammer said. ‘I should so not be telling this story. She was like, “True love leaves scars. You don’t have any.” And then she tried to stab me with a butcher knife,’ he added. ‘Of course I promptly broke up with her…seven months later.’

In one exchange, Hammer is seen to write: ‘I am 100% a cannibal. I want to eat you.’

‘F**k. That’s scary to admit,’ the message continues. ‘I’ve never admitted that before.’

The authenticity of the screenshots has not yet been verified, however the woman behind the House of Effie account shared new alleged correspondences with Hammer on Tuesday, in which he appeared to refer to her as his ‘slave’.

‘You just live to obey me and be my slave,’ a message purported to have been sent from Hammer’s official Instagram account reads.

‘I will own you. That’s my soul. My brain. My spirit. My body. Would you come and be my property till you die?’

The message continues: ‘If I wanted to cut off one of your toes and keep it with me in my pocket so I always had a piece of you in my possession?’

Debbie Reynolds’ vicious feud with Liz Taylor after superstar stole her husband

Hollywood movie icons Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds will fondly be remembered for their famous films.

But perhaps more fascinating is their bitter personal celebrity feud which boiled over outside of the film studio after Taylor fell in love with Reynolds’ husband.

Taylor’s fantastic turn as Cleopatra won her many admirers, while Reynolds’ heart-warming performance in Singin’ In The Rain firmly established the duo’s rightful places in Hollywood folklore.

However, what started out as a fun sisterhood friendship quickly spiralled into a dark web of disappointment and betrayal.

Reynolds was married to singer Eddie Fisher, while Taylor was married to American film producer Mike Todd.

But when Todd was tragically killed in a plane crash, Taylor was comforted by Fisher.

A secret romance blossomed and in turn the love triangle rocked the movie business.

It wasn’t until Reynolds rang Taylor’s hotel room one day and Fisher answered the phone that she discovered the affair was real and not rumour.

Eddie Fisher and his wife Debbie Reynolds who arrived over here for Mr Fisher’s appearance at the London Palladium the 10th June. They arrived on the Queen Elizabeth early Tuesday morning and they travelled up to London by road. This is Eddie Fisher’s second engagement at the Palladium. 4th June 1957.

“Suddenly, a lot of things clicked into place,” revealed Reynolds to the Daily Mail in 2010.

“I could hear her voice asking him who was calling – they were obviously in bed together.

“I yelled at him, ‘Roll over, darling and let me speak to Elizabeth.'”

Fisher left Reynolds for Taylor just a month after the death of Todd and she recalled: “I was the last to find out about the affair. There had been hints in the papers and I had noticed that when I turned up at functions or parties on my own my friends were whispering.

“Although I didn’t want to find out the truth, I had to face up to it. Even so, it was a great shock to find them together. It left me shattered.”

UNITED STATES – CIRCA 1953: (FILE PHOTO) British-born actress Elizabeth Taylor in a red bathing suit with sequins on the front in 1953. The British born actress had suffered from numerous health problems since 1997 and was most recently hospitalized in Los Angeles at the beginning of February this year for congestive heart failure, a condition she has had since November 2004. Taylor first graced our screens at the age of 12 in “National Velvet'” and went on to receive two Oscars for her performances in “Butterfield 8” (1960) and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966) and appeared in more than 50 films. She was married eight times and most famously married Richard Burton a second time in 1975 which lasted less than a year. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

To make matters even more complicated, Reynolds and Fisher had two children, Carrie and Todd.

Daughter Carrie famously went on to earn worldwide recognition as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films.

And ironically it was Carrie’s film These Old Broads that saw the Hollywood icons reunited for their last ever TV performance before Taylor died a month after the programme being broadcast in March 2011, aged 79.

The film, which also cast Shirley MacLaine and Joan Collins, included a plot line that very much mirrored the real-life events experienced by her mother.

Taylor stole Reynold’s ex-husband but the women were able to remain friends.

Speaking candidly in a HBO special Wishful Drinking, Fisher didn’t hold back regaling her father’s sordid affair.

“Naturally, my father flew to Elizabeth’s side, gradually making his way to her front,” said Fisher.

“He first dried her eyes with a handkerchief, then he consoled her with flowers, and he ultimately consoled her with his penis.”

Fisher sarcastically added: “Now this made marriage to my mother awkward, so he was gone within the week!”

However, after a chance meeting on the trans-Atlantic cruise ship Queen Elizabeth in 1996 Taylor and Reynolds, who had both remarried, reformed their friendship.

Reynolds revealed to People magazine in 1983: “I never felt bitter about Elizabeth.

“A man doesn’t leave another woman unless he wants to go.

“You know, when Mike Todd died, I sent Eddie to help Elizabeth.

“I don’t think she really loved Eddie. He was an interim during her mourning period.”

Taylor was famously married seven times, most notably with fellow actor and frequent co-star Richard Burton, the couple coined ‘Liz and Dick’.

Amazingly the scandal and Taylor’s infidelity only served to make them bigger draws at the box office.

And during the final years of their lives the pair’s friendship grew event stronger.

When Taylor died in 2011 she bequeathed Reynolds a pair of “spectacular” sapphire earrings and a matching bracelet and necklace.

Reynolds passed away in 2016, a day after the death of her and Fisher’s daughter, Carrie.

Chloe Sims hits back over vicious claims she’s had ‘too much’ face surgery

Chloe Sims was left spitting feathers after followers accused her of lying about not having plastic surgery on her face.

The 38-year-old TOWIE star – who has had Botox and fillers injected into her face for years – slammed claims she’d gone under the knife to change her bone structure after sharing a throwback snap of herself as a teenager.

The 20-year-old photo showed a glowing-skinned Chloe in her natural beauty posing in white pyjamas with her long brunette hair swept into a messy ponytail.

It was seen on The Only Way Is Essexmas Christmas special this week, along with snaps of Chloe in her youthful modelling days – complete with 1990s-style crispy curls and makeup.

Chloe pictured at the age of 18, before any cosmetic procedures

Chloe started modelling as a teenager

But fans were left unconvinced by Chloe’s claims she’s never gone under the knife on her face, with many pointing out how different she looks now.

The mum of one took to her Instagram Story to slam the rumours, telling “thick” trolls she’d disown them if they were her relatives.

“I’ve just had to delete some comments on my social media,” she told the camera.

“How many times can I say I haven’t had surgery on my face?”

Chloe slammed claims she’s ever had surgery on her face

She went on: “Surgery is changing the structure of your bones in your face.”

“I’ve had cosmetic treatments, yes, but that’s not surgery.”

Chloe has openly spoken about the plastic surgery she’s previously had on her body, including two boob jobs to boost her from a 34B to a 34EE, and two Brazilian butt lifts to round out her bum – as well as veneers to replace her natural smile.

But she’s continuously denied facial surgery, including a nose job and chin implants, claiming her changing face is solely down to fillers.

Chloe blasted the trolls as “thick”

She’s frequently denied rumours she had a nose job, chin implant or any other surgery on her face, apart from fillers

“People keep going ‘she needs to get her mental health checked, she’s had too much plastic surgery on her face’,” Chloe went on.

“Then one woman goes ‘you’ve had too much Botox you can’t move your lips.’

“You can’t have Botox in your lips, you thick p****.”

She added: “How embarrassing. If that was one of my relatives I would disown them.

“I get by with this face. I like my face. So there you go.”

Chloe has previously opened up about how being in the spotlight fed her insecurities

It’s not the first time Chloe has lost her rag over questions about her changing looks – in April 2019 she exploded with rage when fans asked her why she looked so different then compared to her teenage years.

“Apparently I’ve had a nose job? Cheek fillers and endless other work?” she tweeted, sharing snaps of herself at 13, 17 and 18.

“Funny that? Dragging people down again are we??? Age 17 – 13 – 18 as you can see exact same nose & face #idiots.”

Chloe’s outburst comes days after her rarely seen 15-year-old daughter Maddie made her TOWIE debut.

The mum-daughter duo beamed as they posed together for the TOWIE Christmas special.

Joined by her aunties Demi and Frankie, Maddie proudly stood next to her glamorous mum in a velvet blazer and ripped black jeans as part of her first reality TV scenes.

Madison is the daughter of Chloe and her ex-boyfriend Matthew, with Chloe giving birth to her at the age of 18.

Chloe previously told New magazine about her relationship with Matthew, saying: “I was with Maddie’s dad, Matthew, for seven years, but we ended up like brother and sister and that isn’t what I want.”

“She has a good relationship with her dad,” she added.

“I’m very close to her dad’s parents. She is surrounded by people who love her.”

It’s a pretty privileged stance for someone who became infamous for his super-spreader parties at his $6.9million Calabasas mansion over the summer.

He subsequently told The Verge: ‘So this guy, this reporter, he misquoted me. He took what I said out of context, and I told him that. I told him that the whole entire time.’

But Daily Beast reporter Marlow Stern came back with receipts, taking to Twitter with a recording of the interview, which he later posted a second time, claiming Paul’s team had the original SoundCloud link taken down.

Freddie Mercury’s savage nickname for Sid Vicious that sparked brutal row

Freddie Mercury was never one to do things conventionally – even when it came to arguments.

The music icon managed to rub punk icon Sid Vicious up the wrong way in 1977 by revealing his stinging nickname for the The Sex Pistols’ frontman – to his face.

Sid had earned a reputation for his crazed and unpredictable antics but that did not stop Freddie from standing up to him at their very first meeting.

The Sex Pistols shot to fame at breakneck speed in the late 1970s, riding a wave of controversy that stunned and horrified the British public.

Freddie Mercury was never one to hold back

Their sudden popularity threatened to usurp the success of long-standing bands including Queen, and the attention had not gone unnoticed by Freddie.

So when the two bands found themselves recording at the same Wessex Studios in London on the same day, sparks flew.

Queen were working on their album next door to The Sex Pistols, and according to the band’s roadie Peter Hince, Vicious tried to stomp on Freddie’s turf by pulling the eccentric star to one side for a chat.

The pop legend kicked Sid out of the recording studio

Sid was known as a controversial character in the music industry

The former roadie opened up about the showdown in his book Queen Unseen.

Hince recalled: “Sid Vicious stumbled in, the worse for wear, and addressed Fred: ‘Have you succeeded in bringing ballet to the masses yet?’”

In a bid to take his competition down a peg or two, Freddie barked back by using only two words which immediately sent Sid into a fit of rage.

“Fred casually got up, walked over to him and jibed: ‘Aren’t you Stanley Ferocious or something?'”

Queen were The Sex Pistols’ biggest music competition during the 1970s

Sid was Freddie’s biggest competition

Not stopping there, Freddie then gabbed Sid by the collar and threw him out of the room, said Hince.

Freddie told a slightly different tale to the one Hince remembered when he spoke about the incident.

The music legend said in a TV interview: “I called him Simon Ferocious or something, and he didn’t like it at all.

“I said, ‘What are you going to do about it?’”

Freddie said that Sid ‘purposely interrupted’ Queen’s recording session

Freddie continued: “He was very well marked. I said, ‘Make sure you scratch yourself in the mirror properly today, and tomorrow you’re going to get something else.”

“He hated the fact that I could even speak like that. I think we survived that test.”

Freddie later accused Sid of ‘purposely interrupting’ the recording of Queen’s sixth studio album.

Woman launches vicious headbutt attack on fellow shopper ‘for refusing to wear a mask’ in shop

Woman is caught on camera HEADBUTTING a fellow shopper ‘who refused to wear a mask’ to enter shop in London

  • A woman headbutts, punches, kicks and drags another by the hair in the attack
  • The incident broke out at a Whitechapel petrol station and Co-op on Thursday
  • The violent fight and abusive shouting match goes on for more than a minute
  • An onlooker urges the shop’s staff to ‘fire its security’ after guard does nothing

A woman has viciously attacked a fellow shopper for apparently ‘refusing to wear a face mask’ while in a London shop.

Dramatic footage shows the moment one woman headbutts the other outside a Co-op located at a petrol station in Whitechapel before dragging her inside.

Moments earlier, a group of women queuing to get into the shop were arguing as one apparently refused to put on a face mask.

Onlookers shouted: ‘Wear your mask!’.

Video caught the moment one woman viciously headbutted another for apparently refusing to wear a mask in a London Co-op

Once inside, the attacker punches and kicks the other woman who is now lying on the ground as a member of staff appears to stand by watching.

A third woman attempts to stop a man filming the attack as other bystanders enter the Co-op to try and break up the fight.

The dramatic incident was caught on camera by a Nigerian podcaster, who shared the video on his social media accounts.

He enters the shop as the attacking woman, whose own mask is now pulled down under her chin, furiously shouts and points at the other woman.

The podcaster tries to stop the confrontation, saying ‘It’s enough, you’ve done enough’ and urging the victim of the brutal beatdown to pick up her belongings that fell on the floor during the fight.

The camera then turns on the shop’s security, as the man criticises the security guard who was nowhere to be seen during the assault for just standing by.

‘Security what the f**k did you do? You were holding the door. You didn’t do sh**’

The victim asks the man why he is filming everything, to which he responds that he has to record everything ‘for public property’.

The attacking woman then goes to the counter to by cigarette papers, while continuing to shout and threaten the other woman from a distance.

‘I’m going to break your f**king throat. I promise you if my card is broken, you’re f**king going to pay for it.’

The cameraman heads to the counter to buy his own cigarettes, yelling at the clerks to ‘Fire your security now!’

After the attack, the woman continues to shout and threaten the other, saying she will kill her if her card has been broken in the fray

He then appears to compliment the woman on her ability to fight, even offering to buy her items.

Later in the more than five-minute video, both women and their companions appear to be attempting to restart the fight outside before eventually walking off after the cameraman says the police have been called.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed police were called at 22:46 local time over the altercation at the petrol station in The Highway.

The Met told MailOnline no arrests were made and that those involved in the incident had left the scene prior to police arrival.

The Co-op did not respond to a MailOnline request for comment at the time of this article’s publication.

Hurricane Delta is the latest disaster in a vicious season

Hurricane Delta is the latest storm to threaten the US during a hurricane season that’s smashed records and mangled Gulf Coast communities time and again. The Atlantic hurricane season has lived up to early forecasts of an unusually busy year, and there’s still enough of 2020 left to set new records.

Since modern record-keeping, there have never been more than nine named storms to make landfall in the continental US. That’s forecast to change when Delta hits later today. If it does, it will be the first time since 2005 that five hurricanes have battered the mainland US within a single season.

This is the 25th named storm in a season that’s been so prodigious that the World Meteorological Association ran out of storm names three weeks ago. (In a typical season, only about a dozen tropical depressions gain enough strength to be given a storm name.) Meteorologists resorted to using the Greek alphabet for just the second time in history. The first time this happened was in 2005, and this year’s season is burning through names faster. (In 2005, Hurricane Delta didn’t form until late November.)

Back in August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center predicted that up to 25 named storms would form this year. Hurricane season ends on November 30th, leaving plenty of time for more.

Delta became the strongest Atlantic hurricane with a Greek name on October 6th after it rapidly intensified into a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds, according to Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. Delta grew from a tropical depression to a Category 4 hurricane faster than any other storm in the Atlantic in modern records, according to meteorologists Sam Lillo and Tomer Burg. Storms that quickly intensify are becoming more frequent as the climate heats up.

Delta weakened before striking Mexico just south of Cancun earlier this week, pummeling tourist spots and cutting power to about a third of households and businesses — 266,000 customers — on the Yucatan peninsula.

Now, Delta is expected to bring a “life-threatening” storm surge to parts of the Gulf Coast, including areas recently battered by Hurricane Laura. Homes and buildings are still boarded up and covered with tarps in Louisiana after Laura tore through in late August. Laura was another hurricane that intensified with surprising speed. Now, Delta threatens to pick up piles of debris left in Laura’s aftermath and turn them into blunt weapons with its hurricane-force winds.

Laura’s 150-mph winds wrecked the radar station in Lake Charles, Louisiana, leaving the area without a way to gather data on conditions in the lower atmosphere. A mobile Doppler radar unit was brought in yesterday by the National Weather Service and the University of Oklahoma, The Washington Post reported. Without it, officials would have been left without a tool to monitor potential tornadoes and flash flooding.

As the Gulf Coast braces for more damage, much of the nation is reeling from a year with more billion-dollar disasters than nearly any other. 2020 has already tied the record with 2011 and 2017 for the total number of weather and climate disasters causing at least $1 billion in losses. Sixteen billion-dollar catastrophes — not including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — have taken place this year. That includes hurricanes Laura and Sally and unprecedented wildfires across the West Coast.

With hurricane season and fire season still raging, 2020 could still set a new record with a 17th disaster. Hurricane Delta, currently a dangerous Category 2 storm as it makes its way across the Gulf of Mexico, could deal that blow.

It’s rare for hurricanes to make landfall in the US past October, according to Klotzbach. “But certainly given what’s happened so far this year, we’re not ruling out anything yet,” he tells The Verge. “It remains to be seen what the final post mortem on the season will be.”

Rangers’ Marc Staal aftermath and vicious moment that changed everything

Regarding the Rangers, eight days away from making the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft:

1. I have borne witness to a number of shocking events on the ice throughout my career. Mark Messier hoisting the Stanley Cup at the Garden most assuredly qualifies.

But the single most astounding play I have ever seen was the one with 50 seconds in the second period of the Blueshirts match at Carolina on Feb. 22, 2011, when Eric Staal leveled Marc Staal on a violent high hit that induced a concussion that would only alter the remainder of No. 18’s career.

The blow came while the defenseman was engaged with another Hurricane and looking down for the puck by the boards. The hit, albeit legal, was vicious. And astonishing. No one, and I mean no one, in the press box watching the game understood it. Neither did anyone participating in the game with whom I spoke. I don’t ever need YouTube to conjure the image.

Marc Staal soldiered through the remainder of that season, less than candid with the medical staff about lingering effects from the concussion he had sustained. Less than candid with the public, too. When he missed the next three games, he said his knee was the issue.

But he missed the first half of 2011-12 with post-concussion symptoms, was supplanted by Ryan McDonagh as the top pair left defenseman, and his game was never quite the same. Issues of course were exacerbated when No. 18 was struck in the eye by a deflected puck during 2012-13, yet he was an integral top-four part of the teams that went to the Cup final and won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2013-14 and 2014-15, respectively.

So how dramatically did Staal’s career change following the Concussion in Carolina? In that 2010-11 season, his fourth year in the league, Staal led Rangers’ point men in power play time with 203:31. In the nine seasons following that one, Staal got a total of 103:14 with the man-advantage.

2. Trading Staal to the Red Wings, as the Blueshirts did on Saturday by packaging the alternate captain and his $5.7 Million cap hit with a 2021 second-round draft pick in exchange for “future considerations,” will have no impact on the anticipated buyout of Henrik Lundqvist.

For while the motivation for cutting ties with The King is to create space, all right, that space is in the crease that will be shared by Igor Shesterkin and Alex Georgiev, and not space under the cap. The Rangers aren’t buying out Lundqvist to save $3M under the cap (while adding $1.5M of dead space in 2021-22). They are doing it to enable both the club and the Swede to start this coming season with a clean slate.

3. Pending Lundqvist’s projected buyout, the Rangers will have $23,091,867 of space. Setting aside up to a combined $10.5M to resign Tony DeAngelo and Ryan Strome, they would still have another $12.5M available for Alex Georgiev, Brendan Lemieux and to fill in the blanks.

There is no reason whatsoever the team needs to spend to the cap this offseason. On the contrary, the Rangers should maintain flexibility to accommodate those who might become unexpectedly available due to market volatility caused by the effects of the pandemic.

4. The Staal-DeAngelo pair was intact for 39 of the final 43 games, on for 19 goals scored and 14 against in 438:06 of five-on-five play, which is not only not too bad, but is actually pretty darn respectable for a third pair. (Thanks, Naturalstattrick.com.)

So the Rangers will need a replacement on the left side of the blue line that would feature incumbents Ryan Lindgren and Brendan Smith, whatever air of confidence with which that leaves everyone.

Libor Hajek, who will get a head start on the season by playing in the Czech League, likely will get first crack at the vacancy. K’Andre Miller could contend for a spot.

But the Rangers could also move the righty-shooting DeAngelo to the left. We are talking about a small sample size, but when DeAngelo played the left with Adam Fox for 79:37 of five-on-five, the pair had a 62-pct Corsi rating, a 62-percent shot share and a goals for-against of seven-three for a plus four. (Of course, they were generally together when the Rangers were behind and pressing for offense.)

So, hypothetically: DeAngelo with Fox, Ryan Lindgren with Jacob Trouba and…and…and?

And if, as likely, the team is seeking a veteran to play either side on a one-year depth deal, Ottawa pending free agent Ron Hainsey should be at the top of the list of candidates. The 39-year-old lefty worked primarily last year on the right with Thomas Chabot. The 2000 Montreal first-rounder was on the Penguins’ 2017 Cup winning defense coached by incoming Rangers assistant Jacques Martin.

India slams Pak for raking up J&K in UNGA, says Islamabad peddled ‘litany of vicious falsehood’

United Nations, September 25

India on Friday hit back at Pakistan for raking up Jammu and Kashmir in the UN General Assembly, saying Islamabad peddled “another litany of vicious falsehood, personal attacks, war mongering”.

“PM of Pakistan statement a new diplomatic low — at 75th UN General Assembly. Another litany of vicious falsehood, personal attacks, war mongering and obfuscation of Pakistan’s persecution of its own minorities & of its cross-border terrorism. Befitting Right of Reply awaits,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti tweeted.

In his pre-recorded video statement to the General Debate at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly on Friday, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan made references to India’s internal affairs, including Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian delegate in the general assembly hall walked out when PM Khan started his usual diatribe about India.

India has firmly told Pakistan that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been, is, and shall continue to be an integral part of India. New Delhi has maintained that issues related to Jammu and Kashmir are internal matters to India.

Pakistan has been unsuccessfully trying to drum up international support against India for withdrawing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5 last year and bifurcating it into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

India has categorically told the international community that the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution was its internal matter. It also advised Pakistan to accept the reality and stop all anti-India propaganda. PTI
