Jamia library video : Priyanka vadra, Shashi tharoor demand action against brutality done

A new CCTV footage was released by the Jamia Coordination Committee on Saturday showing Delhi Police personnel thrashing students with sticks in the library.

Hours after a new CCTV footage showing Delhi Police thrashing students sitting in library in Jamia Millia University emerged, the Congress party has demanded “exemplary punishment” for the policemen at fault.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted the video and said, “CCTV footage has emerged showing police assaulting Jamia students without provocation. Horrifying. Exemplary punishment must be levied on these lawless policemen.”

The new footage is a full-length CCTV footage from December 15 and captures what happened at Jamia’s Old Reading Hall.

The Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), a group comprising students and alumni of the varsity, has released the footage.

The video shows Delhi Police personnel, in riot gear, entering the hall and beating up students who were studying with lathis.

In the footage, students can be seen sitting in the reading hall as the Delhi Police storms in and starts hitting them with batons and damaging property. The police continue beating up students as they tried to flee.

Congress General-Secretary Priyanka Gandhi also expressed her outrage over the video. Taking to Twitter, she wrote, “See how the Delhi Police is indiscriminately beating up pupils who are studying. A boy is showing his book but the policeman is hitting him with lathis. The Home Minister and Delhi Police officials lied that they had not beaten anyone by entering the library.”

The JCC has also issued a statement on the footage of Delhi Police’s brutality.

“The CCTV footage shows the brutal act of police forces and how the state-sponsored terrorists are playing the game of brutality on the students of Jamia who were preparing for their examination inside the Old Reading Hall of Library,” the JCC statement reads.
