West Bengal/ Mamta Banerjee’s government passes resolution in the assembly against CAA
Proposals have been passed against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) from the Legislative Assembly of Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan. Now West Bengal is going to become the fourth state to pass a resolution against the CAA.
Kolkata: After Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, now West Bengal will be the fourth state where the Legislative Assembly will pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) today. West Bengal Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee moved a resolution against the CAA at around 2 pm in the Assembly.
The proposal appealed to the Central Government to cancel the CAA, not working on the schemes of National Citizen Register (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had recently claimed that the central government is only trying to advance the CAA in non-BJP ruled states.
He had said, “We have also passed a resolution against NRCA three months ago. We will also pass a resolution against the CAA.”
Unlike the opinion of non-BJP ruled states, the central government says that no state can pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act and this is an unconstitutional step.
CAA has emerged as a new issue of altercation between Trinamool Congress and BJP. On one hand, the Trinamool Congress is opposing the law with full force, on the other hand BJP is insisting on implementing it.
The CAA was approved by Parliament in the month of December. After which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been holding meetings continuously. He described the CAA as dividing on the basis of religion. BJP is holding meetings in favor of CAA in West Bengal.
