After 3.5 Magnitude, Back-to-back earthquakes rattle Hollister area

A preliminary 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck south of Hollister, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Magnitude 2.5 and 3.5 temblors were reported around 10 p.m. Tuesday

HOLLISTER – Back-to-back earthquakes rattled the Hollister area late Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS said the first quake – a magnitude 3.5 – hit at 9:57 p.m. roughly 13 miles south-southeast of Hollister at a depth of 2.5 miles. At 10:05 p.m., a magnitude 2.5 quake struck about 12 miles south-southeast of Hollister at a depth of 1.3 miles.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.

Both earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of the San Andrea Fault. The most recent major quake associated with the fault was the Oct. 17, 1989, Loma Prieta quake, which killed 64 people and rendered 16,000 homes uninhabitable, according to the USGS.
