Uddhav Thackeray’s chair now rests on Maharashtra Governor’s mercy

Actually, the future of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray hangs in the balance as Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has not yet decided on his Legislative Council nomination. He did not give a clear answer to Thackeray’s nomination during a conversation with state ministers.
A delegation of cabinet members like Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Eknath Shinde and Anil Parab of Shiv Sena and Balasaheb Thorat and Aslam Sheikh of Congress arrived to meet the Governor on Tuesday. In this, he recommended the state cabinet to nominate Thackeray as a member of the council.
Ball in the Governor’s court, a senior cabinet member said, “Koshiyari listened to us but his attitude was evasive so we don’t know if he will accept our petition or not.” He said that in view of uncertainty over Thackeray’s nomination, the government is considering contacting the Election Commission for the Legislative Council elections. Elections were to be held on April 24, according to the pre-election plan, elections were to be held on April 24 for nine seats and Thackeray was to contest. However, due to the corona virus, the commission postponed the election.
For this reason, the Chief Minister wants the Governor to nominate him on one of the two seats lying vacant in his quota. No decision on the petition taken: The cabinet had submitted a proposal for his nomination at Raj Bhavan on 9 April, but it was recently informed that no decision was taken on his petition on technical grounds. After which the cabinet passed a fresh resolution on Monday.
In which the commission has been asked to conduct council elections in the state at the earliest or before 20 May. Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on November 27, within a month to become a member of the Legislative Council. He is neither an MLA from the state nor a member of the Legislative Council at this time. According to the constitution, they are required to become members of a House within six months.
