Davina McCall urges schools to teach young girls about perimenopause
Davina McCall has urged schools to teach young girls about symptoms of the perimenopause after she was diagnosed without having any knowledge about it.
The former Big Brother presenter, 53, is calling for teachers to educate school pupils about the condition, which she began to get symptoms for aged 44.
Davina says she was clueless as to why her body was “feeling different” as she didn’t know anything about the symptoms, and vows to tackle future conversation about the diagnosis in a bid to bring awareness to the situation.
She insists “all women should know what it is” after suffering from it herself.
Davina told OK! Magazine : “All women should know what it is.
“I didn’t know and I was 44 when I started getting symptoms. I didn’t know what was causing my hot sweats. I didn’t know why I was feeling different.”
The menopause is defined as the changes a woman’s body goes through before and after she stops her periods and can no longer get pregnant naturally.
The TV star admitted that it is a taboo subject, adding: “Nobody talks about it, and I just think it should be talked about more generally and taught in schools.”
Davina has previously worked hard to try and remove stigma around the menopause, by launching her own event, Own Your Goals on World Menopause Day.
She spoke candidly about the topic with Lorraine Kelly, Dr Louise Newson, and Liz Earle as she wanted her followers to not feel embarrassed about it.
The infamous presenter has recently spoken out about feeling “liberated” by the likes of younger stars – including Jonathan Ross’ daughter Honey Ross and singer Lily Allen – who are openly speaking about sex and female pleasure.
Speaking on her podcast Making The Cut, Davina discussed Lily’s recent sex toy collaboration: “There’s this type of vibrator that Lily Allen has teamed up with called The Womaniser. It’s a new kind and is revolutionising sex toys for women.
“It’s a new way of stimulating, which is extremely effective and really a game changer.
“What I love about all of these women who are out there, including Honey Ross, they are there just talking about things that previously were so embarrassing and shaming to talk about and they’re just getting it out in the open.
“They are liberating me. I’m sure they’re not supposed to be liberating me because I’m supposed to be flipping liberated by now, but they are liberating my girls and they are also liberating me.
“As a 53-year-old woman to not be embarrassed about this stuff is great because why should we not have pleasure like men?”
