Surely, you were not even aware that it was possible that there was a McDonald’s in Cuba. After all, the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro nationalized American properties on the island, so the countries have not been on good terms since. Also, later, in the 1960s, the United States imposed a trade embargo in which it prohibited most Americans from spending their money there.

That is why it would seem unlikely that Cuba would allow a McDonald’s – which could be considered a symbol of US capitalism – on its land. However, not only did this happen, but the branch is in a place that is more gloomy than cheerful. And is that the restaurant is at the famous Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

According to the United States Department of State, as part of a 1903 treaty, Cuba leased Guantanamo Bay to the United States to use as a base and ceded complete jurisdiction and control of that region.

In exchange for this, the United States agreed to recognize Cuba’s national sovereignty. It was in this way that McDonald’s was able to set up a franchise in Guantanamo Bay in 1986.

The Guantanamo Bay Naval Base is particularly famous because it was the detention center for hundreds of suspected terrorists who were imprisoned after the September 11 attacks without being charged or tried for any crime.

Here, interrogation techniques that many viewed as torture were said to have been carried out, and detainees who cooperated with authorities were said to be given a McDonald’s meal as a reward, Mashed reported.
