The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards took a different form this year with the coronavirus pandemic leading to it being ‘virtual’ for the first time.

The nominees awaited to hear their fate at home or in social bubbles with other members of the cast from which the show they starred in.

One person who was at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel, who referenced the coronavirus pandemic and social unrest that has marked much of 2020 as he opened the ceremony like no other.

Anchoring proceedings, he welcomed viewers to the “pandemmys”, adding: “The world may be terrible but TV has never been better.”

Jennifer Aniston made a surprise appearance on stage to present the first award, outstanding lead actress in a comedy.

Kimmel, wearing yellow gloves, sprayed the envelope with disinfectant and set it on fire to “burn the germs off,” before reading the winner.

Catherine O’Hara picked up the award for upbeat comedy Schitt’s Creek, and it was revealed she and her cast mates were holding an Emmys viewing party.

It was going to be quite a night for the show as it picked up several awards.
