Dimitar Berbatov makes Tottenham claim ahead of Gareth Bale transfer

Tottenham’s proposed transfer of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid would give them the “strongest front-line in the league”.

That’s the view of ex-Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, who believes the signing of the Welshman will serve as a huge statement to other potential arrivals.

Spurs are said to be closing in on a move for Bale, after the player’s agent Jonathan Barnett revealed talks between his client, and manager Jose Mourinho.

“There’s a long way to go on some issues, but without doubt Gareth is closer to leaving Madrid than at any time in last seven years,” Barnett said on Wednesday.

Tottenham will pay a portion of Gareth Bale’s £600,000-per-week wages

“The deal is complicated, but there’s reason to believe a deal is close and things could move very quickly if discussions continue to go well. Gareth has spoken to Jose and explained how Spurs have a special place in his heart.”

Berbatov spent one year with Bale during the 31-year-old’s first stint at White Hart Lane, although that was at a time where there was still uncertainty over his long-term position.

Despite that, with his old teammate returning, the former Spurs and Man United marksman thinks Mourinho will have a front-four the rest of the Premier League will envy.

“Bale, Kane, Son, Dele Alli – managers would kill for this frontline,” Berbatov told Betfair. “How Mourinho sets the team out is a different question, and that will not be easy to answer, but they are all proven goalscorers and star players, so it’s a good problem to have.

“On paper, they now have the strongest front-line in the league along with Liverpool. But Spurs’ fab four have never played together so we will have to see how they gel.

“For Bale, playing with Kane and Son probably sounds pretty good. Bale is probably already texting Harry Kane and other Spurs players, chatting and looking forward to linking up.

“I just want to flick on the TV and see Gareth Bale playing football again! As fans, we want to see players like that on the pitch.”

Bale left Spurs for Real Madrid for a world record fee of £85.3million back in 2013, And Berbatov thinks his return is not only the right move for the player himself, but also sends a clear message about the direction of the club Mourinho.

He added: “I’m sure Bale has been watching the documentary about Spurs, All or Nothing, so he’ll know how the club works now. His agent will have kept in touch, and he will be aware of the new stadium, the amazing training ground.

“This is a step back in the right direction for an amazing player. It’s hard to say that this alone will make Spurs title challengers, but it is a sign to the world that they can do serious business. The players in the squad will be encouraged, and so will potential signings.”
