Frank Lampard has offered a lifeline to Kepa Arrizabalaga over his Chelsea future by insisting he is “happy” with the Spaniard’s contribution.

Chelsea continue to pursue a transfer for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and have reportedly already had an £18million bid accepted.

Mendy’s arrival is expected to oust Kepa from his no.1 spot and has also raised question marks over his long-term role at Stamford Bridge.

But Lampard suggested Kepa had nothing to be concerned about, at least for now.

Asked whether there was news on any more incomings, Lampard replied: “Not at the moment, not at the moment, no.

“There’s obviously some weeks to go until he end of the window.

“We’ve got a big squad now as well so we have to manage that and look at how we move forward in terms of getting the right level of competition within the squad.

“But no news on that one [Mendy] at the minute.”

Lampard’s comments came following Chelsea got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start with a 3-1 win over Brighton.

Kepa was given another chance to impress between the sticks having lost his place to Willy Caballero at the end of last season.

But he failed to keep out Leandro Trossard’s shot from outside the box which dipped past his grasp to equalise for The Seagulls.

Pressed on whether he was looking for a new goalkeeper, Lampard said: “I’m very happy with Kepa.

“I thought Kepa today, I think with the shot I’m not sure if he could’ve done any better but I saw a lot of confidence with how he was playing.

“I’m happy with him.

“Kepa’s here, he’s our keeper and I’m happy with him.”

He added: “If we are bringing in competition, it will be competition, that’s the nature of Chelsea.

“That goes throughout the squad so we’ll see.”
