Cynthia Nixon has spoken out about JK Rowling’s comments about the trans community and said that it felt “really painful” for her transgender son.

The 54-year-old star of Sex and the City has admitted that she is confused about where the Harry Potter author is coming from.

Speaking with the Independent, Cynthia said despite what Rowling said, her transgender son, Samuel, will still watch the Harry Potter movies with her, as they are both huge fans of the films.

When Rowling made the remarks, Cynthia has admitted it was difficult to not take them personally after the journey her and Samuel had been on.

She said: “It was really painful for him because so much of his childhood was tied up with Harry Potter. We’re a Harry Potter family.”

Cynthia, who lives in Manhattan, said that the remarks Rowling made were in contradiction to what she puts forward in her stories.

The actress, who played Miranda Hobbes on HBO’s Sex and the City, continued: “The books seem to be about championing people who are different, so for her to select this one group of people who are obviously different and sort of deny their existence, it’s just… it’s really baffling. I know she feels like she’s standing up for feminism, but I don’t get it.”

JK Rowling caused consternation with her transgender comments

Cynthia admitted that her and Samuel have not dimmed their enjoyment of Harry Potter, saying they have been able to separate the stories from the author.

She continued: “Samuel has a friend of his here right now who has never seen any of the films, so we are actually watching all of them. We’re halfway through number six.”

Cynthia that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe had hit the right note, in his statement against Rowling shortly after her comments were made.

She added: “The thing that he tried to impart to people was that if you as a queer person or as a non-queer person have found a home in these stories, please don’t let this take that away from you. These are still your stories.”

Cynthia Nixon found Rowling’s comments “painful”

JK made headlines in June when she responded to an opinion piece which used the terminology “people who menstruate.”

JK tweeted in response: “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

She continued: “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.

“I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

Rowling later said she felt it’s “every trans person’s rights to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them.”
