Fleetwood Mac, Queen, and Elton John among best-selling albums of the year

Think the music charts are all about the Tik Tok generation? Think again.

Legends Queen, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac are all back in the top 10 bestselling albums of the year so far.

It’s thought people were turning to old favourites in lockdown, as well as new fans snapping up copies after the popularity of biopics Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody.

In new figures, Elton John’s 2017 greatest hits album Diamonds, is at number 8, having sold 123,900 copies and Queen’s Greatest Hits, first released in 1981, was just behind at number 9, having sold 123,000 copies.

Fleetwood Mac don’t have a biopic despite Mick Fleetwood saying their famously-turbulent relationships would “make a great movie”.

Yet they’ve got not one, but two, albums in the list.

Queen are the champions, my friend!

First is their 2018 greatest hits album 50 Years Don’t Stop at number 10, which sold 118,000 copies, and then Rumours, originally released in 1977, which is at number 17, having sold 95,000 copies between the start of this year and now.

“Lockdown will have had a big effect on sales,” said a record industry insider.

“Good music is good music whenever it’s first released,” they added.

Fleetwood Mac also blasted to the top of sales

Elton John also topped the list of best-selling albums

The top album was Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired to A Hellish Extent at number one with 355,000 copies sold and voice-of-the-moment Billie Eilish, at number 3 after selling 556,000 copies of When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go.

How apt that Elton’s last big hit was Love Me Again.
