Diversity’s powerful BGT performance faces soaring 15,500 Ofcom complaints

Complaints against Diveristy’s Britain’s Got Talent performance have soared to 15,500, Ofcom has confirmed.

The dance troupe, led by BGT judge Ashley Banjo, divided viewers when they appeared in the BGT semi-finals last saturday.

Their powerful one-off show was dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement and featured striking scenes where a police officer kneeled on Ashley’s back.

As of Friday, Ofcom have confirmed to the MirrorOnline that they have received 15,500 complaints about the show.

It has become the second most complained about TV moment of the decade.

Saturday’s showstopping performance saw the dance troupe return to the stage 11 years after they won the competition.

Inspired by the BLM activism that has taken the world by storm since the death of George Floyd, the troupe performed to a remix of Tomfoolery’s poem The Great Realisation.

There were also moments when the dancers took a knee while backing performers dancers dressed as riot police.

Some viewers have since criticised the performance, arguing that a family show is not the space for political statements.

Despite the backlash, the troupe have also been inundated with messages of support from a wide-reaching audience who were inspired by the powerful dance.
