India’s top-ranked men’s singles player will take on 2nd seed Dominc Thiem in a highly-anticipated 2nd-round match at US Open 2020 on Thursday. Nagal heads into the tie after having become the 1st men’s singles player from the country to win a Grand Slam main draw match in 7 years.
Nagal is targeting an upset win in his first career meeting with Thiem, who is one of the favourites to finish on the top step of the podium at the Flushing Meadows next Sunday. The 23-year-old took a set off Roger Federer last year at Flushing Meadows and repeated the feat against another Swiss in Stan Wawrinka, during a quarter-final defeat at the Prague Challenger event last month.
Thiem crashed out in the opening round of the Western and Southern Open tune-up event following a straight-sets defeat by Filip Krajinovic and will have to shake off the rust quickly to avoid another shock loss.
Nagal, who was impressive in his 1st-round win over USA’s Bradley Klahn, said he has got nothing to lose and will look to enjoy another appearance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“I’ve got nothing to lose. Last year I played Roger Federer and this year Thiem. It’s going to be a great match. For sure, I’m not the favourite,” Nagal said.
