HIGHLIGHTS

  • IPL 2020 to have 4 umpires from ICC’s Elite Panel
  • India’s Nitin Menon is one of the 4 umpires to be officiating in the IPL
  • Chris Gaffaney, Richard Illingworth and Paul Reifel are learnt to be the other 3 umpires

The 13th season of the Indian Premier League is all set to begin in a matter of two weeks and the stage is all set for a thunderous edition of the world’s biggest T20 league. As it turns out, a total of 16 umpires have been chosen to officiate in the IPL.

However, it was earlier learnt that the umpires of the Elite Panel were not so keen to officiate in the IPL. As opposed to earlier, it is known that 4 of these umpires have been picked from the ICC’s Elite Panel.

India’s Nitin Menon and three others – New Zealand’s Chris Gaffaney, England’s Richard Illingworth and Australia’s Paul Reifel will be heading to the UAE for IPL 2020. Last year, in June, Nitin Menon was incorporated into the Elite Panel after his annual review and became the youngest member in the Governing Council’s panel.

“There are four from ICC’s Elite Panel who have been selected to officiate in the tournament. The rest are Indian umpires. We are looking to bring in the umpires in the UAE around September 10,” sources have told ANI.

After a long wait and having followed all SOPs in place, BCCI is scheduled to finally go ahead with the staging of the IPL, to begin on September 19. The marquee T20 league is scheduled to be hosted across three venues in the UAE- Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Further on, the tournament is scheduled to be played across 53 days with 60 fixtures in place but the BCCI are yet to officially announce the schedule.
