Kerry Katona says she hated Atomic Kitten fame after difficult childhood

Reality TV star Kerry Katona has discussed her struggle with the fame of of being in girl group Atomic Kitten.

The former singer, 39, had sat down to have a new tattoo to cover her old inked initial for ex-husband George Kay.

During the video of the tattoo appointment on YouTube, the star was asked what her favourite part of her time in Atomic Kitten was.

Kerry reflected: “I think, for me, it was our first single it went to number 10, Right Now.

“For me, it was the climb, getting there.”

However, despite the initial success with bandmates Liz McClarnon and Natasha Hamilton, the weight of fame became too much for Kerry.

She said: “I left because I didn’t enjoy the fame. I hated it. Out of the three of us, there was more skeletons in my closet.”

Kerry spoke candidly about her personal history and why this impacted her time in the band.

She continued: “I was in a foster home, we all had mental health issues.I was doing drugs from the age of 14, didn’t know my biological dad, and because I was the pretty one with the blonde hair and big boobs they kind of focused on me.

“It’s taken me a long time to accept it and deal with it. It’s not like you hand in your resignation and say ‘I quit’.”

Kerry reflected on her troubled childhood in the run-up to joining the band

One particular public engagement appeared to be a turning point for Kerry in deciding to end her time in the band.

Kerry explained: “I remember going to a nightclub after we shot to fame – the reaction from the people was like they were touching me… it was so bizarre how people started treating me. I thought ‘I don’t like this.'”

Following her abrupt departure from the band in 2001 after three years, Kerry was replaced by Jenny Frost and Atomic Kitten’s hit single Whole Again was re-recorded to replace Kerry’s vocals with Jenny’s.

Kerry went on to reunite with her old bandmates between 2012 and 2017 before departing once again.

It was announced today that Kerry has gotten engaged to partner Ryan Mahoney, meaning he is set to become her fourth husband.

Kerry has five children from her previous three marriages to Brian McFadden, Mark Croft, and George Kay.
