Mikel Arteta appoints three new staff to his Arsenal backroom team

Mikel Arteta has appointed three new members to his backroom team as his Arsenal rebuild continues.

The Gunners boss has moved quickly to replace Freddie Ljungberg, who stepped down from his role as first-team coach earlier this week to pursue his management ambitions.

Goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo has also departed after five years with the club, but Arteta has hired immediate replacements.

Former Juventus coach Carlos Cuesta comes in, as well as Andreas Georgson from Brentford and Miguel Molina who has worked for Atletico Madrid previously.

The appointments are in addition to the promotion of Jordan Reece to head physio following Chris Morgan’s move back to Liverpool.

Georgson’s arrival is particularly interest given his expertise in set pieces which he oversaw in his previous role with Brentford.

He follows goalkeeper coach Inaka Cana who moved from the Championship club earlier this year.

Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp had also been linked with a coaching role after Ljungberg announced he was leaving but Arteta has ultimately gone with his own selections.

Ljungberg held the fort after Unai Emery’s sacking but felt increasingly redundant after Arteta’s appointment and the subsequent hire of Steve Round as his no.2.

The Swede announced his exit on Saturday and said in a statement: “I have decided to leave my first-team assistant coaching role at Arsenal to progress my management experience.

“I have been involved with this club on and off since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a coach.

“I wish Mikel and all the team every success for the season ahead. Thanks also to the fans for their constant support and for always being by my side. I hope we will all meet again soon.”
