Former India opener and skipper Sunil Gavaskar heaped rich praise on limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma, saying he would have been proud to bat like Rohit in the limited-overs cricket.

Rohit Sharma has often been hailed as one of the greatest ever ODI openers, by cricket experts, former players, and fans. The turnaround for Rohit Sharma happened in early 2013 against England during a home series when he was made the opener for good (he had opened the batting thrice in 2011). Rohit followed that up with a steady show in the 2013 Champions Trophy and from there, there has been no looking back.

“The way you see a Rohit Sharma opening the batting in one-day cricket, Test cricket smashing from the first over. That is what I wanted to play. Circumstances and of course lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do that. But when I see the next generation doing it, I am absolutely over the moon, I love watching the next generation because there you see progress. You see how they are setting the bar higher for the next generation,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today’s Boria Majumdar on the latest episode of Inspiration.

Comfortable against both pace and spin, Rohit has one of the most aesthetically pleasing batting styles in the business. Arguably, he is only next to Virat Kohli as the best ODI batsman in the game.

As an opener, Rohit has scored 7148 runs from 140 ODIs at an average of 58.11 with 27 centuries, whereas in T20Is, he’s tallied 2313 runs from 76 innings and slammed four centuries, the most by a player in the format.

Rohit Sharma was also the world’s leading ODI run-scorer with 1490 runs in 2019. Rohit Sharma, who was also named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, became the first player in history to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.
