Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy flared up when he understood the meaning of the word ‘Kalu’. Sammy faced the term during the Indian Premier League. He has alleged that he, along with his teammate Thisara parera of Sunrisers Hyderabad, has also made racist comments during the Indian Premier League. Recently black man George Floyd was killed in America. 46-year-old Floyd died from a knee by a policeman who died. Protests across the world were registered to protest his murder. 

On this, Darren Sammy had requested the ICC that the people of cricket should come out against racism. Recently he revealed that while he was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he was called ‘Kalu’. Sammy has played for the 2013–14 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In Hindi the word Kalu is used for a person with dark complexion. 

He did not say when and who made the remark against him. The West Indies all-rounder said he did not know the true meaning of the word, but was horrified when he came to know its meaning. Sammy reveals this dark side of cricket. 

Sammy shared a post in his Insta story and wrote in it – I just learned what Kalu means. When I was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, I and Perera used to be called Kalu. I am very angry to know this.

He said that fans in IPL often violate their limits. Some people even abuse the stadium. Sammy was the first cricketer who wrote on social media in favor of Floyd against racism. He was the first player who wrote – Black Lives Matter. Sammy played 38 Tests, 126 ODIs and 68 T20 Internationals for the West Indies. Under his leadership, the West Indies won the T20 World Cup twice.

After Darren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and KL Rahul also wrote on racism. Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also supported this campaign against racism. He wrote referring to Nelson Mandela – Mandela said that sports have the power to change the world. No one has the strength to unite the world in it.
