New Zealand / Tarant guilty of firing two mosques, killing 51 people; Attempted to murder 40 people and also guilty of terrorism

Wellington. Australian citizen Brenton Harrison Tarant has been convicted of attacking two mosques (Al-Noor and Linwood) in Christchurch, New Zealand. He has been convicted of killing 51 people, attempting to murder 40 people and spreading terror. The sentence has not been decided yet on Tarant. Brenton killed 51 people in the attack last year. There were 8 Indians among them. 

On 15 March 2019, 28-year-old Brenton fired indiscriminately at people sitting during the Namaz in two mosques. He was arrested by the police 21 minutes after the attack. Tarrant had released a live video of the massacre on Facebook, which went viral and was also seen on another social media. The attack shook the entire Muslim community of the country, after which the international community and local people showed solidarity with the affected. Then Prime Minister Jesinda Ardern talked about changing the gun law. More than 50 people were also injured during the attack. In this, the players of Bangladesh cricket team also narrowly survived. 

Tarant was a fitness instructor 
When the police first presented Tarant in court, he was smiling the whole time. After a while, he laughed in front of the media and hinted that everything would be fine. Tarrant was a fitness instructor before becoming a terrorist. In court, he called himself a fascist and did not even plead for bail. 

Relief to families suffering from the verdict

Tarrant’s case was scheduled to be heard in June, but the court decided to take a hearing immediately despite a 4-week lockdown. Tarant was involved in the video link from the prison itself. The suffering families have expressed happiness over the conviction of Tarant
