CAA Threatens Secularity, Centre Should Withdraw It': Kamal Nath Cabinet Passes Resolution

Madhya Pradesh becomes 5th state to pass resolution against CAA

he Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 and urged the union government to revoke it. Madhya Pradesh became the fifth state to do so after Bengal, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan.

The minister said that they had also urged the Centre to clear the apprehensions and fears attached to NRC, before implementing it in the country.

Terming the CAA as violative of the basic character of the Constitution of India, the resolution has a mention of protests that have started across the country after its enactment.

India is a secular country and there is a clear mention of this in the Preamble of the Constitution. Also, article 14 of the Constitution guarantees equality before law and non-discrimination through law. These principles of the constitution have been violated hence the CAA should be revoked, the resolution reads.

Speaking to Indian Today TV after the cabinet meeting in which this resolution was passed, State Law Minister, PC Sharma said, The Congress party has made its stand on CAA very clear. It is violative of the basic principles of our constitution so the state cabinet unanimously passed the resolution. Also, we have urged the government to withdraw the provisions under which information that has never been sought for census purposes is now being sought for NPR 2020.

“The Union government should first withdraw these provisions and then move towards starting the census process afresh, he added.

It may be recalled that there have been widespread protests against the CAA across Madhya Pradesh. Most of these protests have so far remained by and large peaceful.

The opposition BJP in the state has staged demonstrations in favour of the CAA in many parts in the last few weeks.

Toeing its earlier stance on contentious Citizenship Amendment Law, the Kamal Nath cabinet here on Wednesday passed a government resolution, urging the Centre to roll back CAA to ensure equality for all citizens.

“This (CAA) seems to have tampered with the basic tenets of the constitution, that is secularism. It violates Article 14 which offers right to equality for all citizens, so through the government resolution, we have urged the Centre to roll it back,” said Public Relations Minister PC Sharma, after the meeting of state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

The minister said that they had also urged the Centre to clear the apprehensions and fears attached to National Register of Citizens, before implementing it in the country.

After the contentious Citizenship Amendment Law was passed in the parliament, Nath had announced that it would not be implemented in Madhya Pradesh. The state government had even recently organised a protest march against CAA in Bhopal
