New Delhi: 144 petitions are on the list of hearings in the Supreme Court today regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA. CAA has been opposed in most petitions. In the last hearing held on 17 December, the court refused to ban the law. The court had sought an answer from the government on the petitions and said that in January, the matter will be heard in detail only then an order will be given.

Today, the petitions before the Chief Justices SA Bobde, S Abdul Nazeer and Sanjeev Khanna in this case are being heard, the Assam Pradesh Congress, CPM, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, RJD Petitions from leaders Manoj Jha, Indian Union Muslim League, Jamiat Ulema A Hind are included. Apart from this, the Kerala government has also filed a petition. A hearing can be held today as well.

In all these petitions, the new law passed from Parliament has been said to be against the Constitution. It states that under Article 14 every person has the fundamental right to equality in the eyes of law. The Citizenship Amendment Act violates this. This law talks about giving citizenship from neighboring countries of India to the persecuted people of the community like Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Parsi, Sikh, Jain. But Muslims have not been deliberately included in this. The Constitution of India does not allow such discrimination. It has been demanded in these petitions that the Supreme Court should immediately stop the implementation of this law.

Demanding an immediate ban on the law, the Indian Union Muslim League has cited the identification of 40,000 non-Muslim immigrants in UP. It has been said in the petition that preparations are being made to give citizenship to these people. The court prohibited the law from doing so until a hearing on its validity.

Apart from this, the issue of NPR and NRC has also been raised in many petitions. Arguing the contradiction in the statements of the PM and the Home Minister on the NRC, the court has been demanded to seek clarification from the government. The petitioners want the court to ask the government whether NPR is being done for the preparation of NRC. Petitions have also demanded to stop the government from bringing NRC.
